Recently purchased a M17X with 7970M. The fans are on full blast all the time when I am in D3, and it's really loud.
I have tried turning down the graphics options in game, but it does not affect the fans. Is this because of lack of optimized 7970m drivers? (I'm using Dell's 8.934.2 driver). Or am I just paranoid?

paranoid probably
mine on current R3 is loud aswell, though GPU temp during D3 is 65-68C
-
I think the fans go full blast when temps reach 65C on the GPU, perfectly normal tbh

Turning the graphics down will not slow the fans because your GPU will be working at the same level. Higher graphics + lower frames will tax the GPu the same as lower graphics + very high frame rate. The GPU will be loaded to full at all times, heating up to between 60-70C causing the fans to spin up.

M17x is a loud beast

I just used 2 bottle tops to prop my wife's R4 up in the back about an inch and the fans rarely come on. When I get back home next week I'm going to re-paste it just for good measure.

Turn on vsync?

You say not optimized drivers? Do the ATI reference drivers via their website not work for the 7970m
**Edit**
Nevermind, I just went to the site and no 7xxx series drivers are up yet. How long is that supposed to take...
