So I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop very soon, and looking at the G73. But a lot of my friends are going to get into FF14 when it releases and I'm reading that the G73 and all of its driver issues cause it to not play FF14 unless you download ATI's drivers that cause grey screen of death. So not being able to play FF14 is a dealbreaker for me, and I'm wondering if the M17X with 5870s is up to the task or does it have the same driver issues as the G73.

I can't comment on issues with the Asus G73 but check out this thread for opinions on Alienware and FFXIV.
Edit: Apologies, I just realised the thread I linked appeared to be in the m15x sub-forum. Try searching here - there look to be a few posts on the m17x and FFXIV.
I believe there are several people that have tested with the Benchmark or are in the beta and are pleased with performance.
While I couldn't get the Benchmark running, I discovered afterwards that it was possibly due to lack of Crossfire support. I'm yet to try again disabling crossfire but I believe this is something that was being worked on from Square-Enix's side. (Someone else may be able to provide more information / correct me on that). -
Yeh I too have heard ATi cards are having some trouble with the game so far. Or maybe its just the benchmark. However so far the game is leaning more so towards Nvidia. It even has the Nvidia Logo the way its meant to be played stuck on the Benchmark screen. I'm sure the final product releasing later next month should work better once their are better driver support for it. So far no SLi or Crossfire support for the game. Cheers.
