Hey, I'm considering jumping on the M17X bandwagon. Just wondering, in your opinion, how does the M17X feel on your lap or beside you on a bed/couch?

The main reason I want an M17X is for desktop power, but with minor portability. Minor portability as in the ability to move it from a desk, to my bed, to the floor, to the kitchen table, etc

It is fine on the lap for a few minutes-ONLY. Gets warm and heavy. But the way it is designed, you need it on a table or laptop stand/table made for your lap. Or a cooler. I took a piece of 1/2 inch plywood, cut out holes and air passage ways for when I want to hold it on my lap.
If you just rest it on your lap/legs, they are gonna block the air vents for the GPU's and cause it to get very hot and possibly overheat. Just my opinion.

Come on over (M17X). It's great!!!!

Im assuming you are talking about the R2 since no one here has the R3 yet. R3 should run a lot cooler with only one video card and optimus. its also about a kilo lighter.

they arent made for laps tbh. your legs will have some imprints in them in a matter of minutes. If you plan to play games with it in your lap, you have to arrange yourself so that the vents are unblocked. I've never been able to stand having it on my lap for more than an hour tops. They are heavy sob's and definitely aren't comfortable.

That being said, theres no way they could have made a computer this awesome AND made it comfortable to use on your lap.

I've use it on my lap constantly. I think the longest I've gone is 5+ hours straight in a COD tournament. Maybe I'm just weird or something, but I don't have a problem with it being on my lap. It gets a little warm but it's just like having an electric blanket on your legs.

Watch out the heat as it can easily damage your sperms productivity..!!!
Just an advice so you won't regret putting it on your legs ...

    Hello,hello,Here is my 2 cents.

As soon as ,I saw this table on three wheels at OfficeWorks here in Australia, I know that I must have it ! It was on sale at the time for $130.00 AUD.I got it about 5 years ago.

I could adjust the heights, tilt the lappy and room for my mouse, mobile phone + 2.5" external hard drive. Wheel it all over the house.
Slide it over my bed and best of all I could just push it away whenever I could not keep my eyes open late at night or turn over and give my Good lady wife a cuddle while I am in bed .Very convenience you know.... ooh oh I can even use it over my favourite recliner chair in the lounge room.....and push it out to the backyard, listen to birds while surfing or gaming away....and ran the Logitech Cordless Gamepad with Rumble pack and vibration receiver under the table for gaming ,MAD!

Maybe in the future ,I might cut out 2 or 3 holes for cooling fan mod .....
I don't have to worry about the sperms productivity problems :)

Check out the photos ,see of what else you could do with it that I can't think of at the moments.

Save your laps and sperms ,Bruce lee. ;) ;)

Integrated folding/collapsible legs would be nice. :D

    Killer Juice,
I use a tray similar to this.

Here are a couple threads about various trays & stands that the community uses for their M17x:

    Good luck!

    Nice links, Tazalanche.
Because I am a lazy guy when I am in bed.
I don't want to get off my butt , putting the laptop away when I am tired.
for me, something with wheels on it and does not take much room .All I have to do press the power button and gently push the table away then slip under the doona :p :p

I found something similar to mine on ebay for cheap, you might be interesting in.(sorry, I don't know how to tidy up the link!)

    Here you are.

Oh lord. This has to be one of the most misunderstood scares people have latched onto of all time. Yes a study was done to see if laptops could damage sperm count. And they found it could - but ONLY if you weren't wearing any pants or briefs and had the thing resting directly on your . . . well manparts . . . for a HUGELY extended period of time.

They found any form of clothing was more than adequate to shield you from the minuscule radiation that some laptops emit occasionally.

Right, and why would you be worried about your sperm count if you were headed to college? I'd want as few of mine working as possible. Fewer illegitimate children running around. :D

Not to mention that study was from back when the amount of heat a laptop kicked out could cook a meal faster than the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie. ;)

I remember multiple manufacturers were trying to get all of their PR, sales & support reps to call a laptop a "portable computer", or a "notebook computer", to try to reduce the possibility of sterility lawsuits.
