M17X-R2 6990m shutdown heat issues

I have a m17x-r2 that my 5870 finally met its maker here lately, and therefore I upgraded to the 6990m for the time being because of not much money and it was cheaper than the 7970m.

I installed the 6990m (which was pulled from a m18x), repasted, repadded, retention mod, updated drivers, works good on idle with temps between 40'C-45'C. My problem comes when I try to play anygame, before I can get started good the gpu reaches between 85'C-89'C which causes a shutdown for some reason. This has me at a loss because my 5870m would operate at these temps an high just fine. I have downloaded HWinfo64, but I have been having problems trying to get the fans to work properly with auto-custom settings.

the gpu 6990m that I have is a dell card, but it has no auto fan control to help with the cooling...is there a fix for this with a vbios flash? if so which one?

I have not flashed this gpu and was going to wait to do this as a last option incase this issue was hardware related.

I have searched the forums to the best of my abilities but info is so scattered and somewhat conflicting not sure what is what, which has left me resorting to starting this post for a helping hand.

I would use radeon bios editor, and undervolt the card to 0.975 volts. Thats where I had my 6990M stable, and it cut down heavily on temps.

 

is there a good tutorial for the RBE for undervolting the 6990m?

 

update....

I repasted my gpu, which after that second look at my first job I did put too much paste (not my best job but lesson learned not to do a paste job an a new component after working 12 hours lol).

I have been working with tweaking the HWinfo64 sense custom fan settings.... still not sure what is good.

At the moment I am typing this I am logged into EvE Online now an it has been working a max settings (except for AA) for an hour now. The fans are working good it seems and they have only went full RPM once for few seconds then back to a stable rpm. and my temps so haven't went above 82'c and are sitting at about 79-80'c on average. These temps are while ingame.

After the repaste job, at first when I used anything that caused a load on the gpu my screen would show artifacts and flicker before going solid black with only my mouse pointer on the screen. To fix this I reseated my gpu and reflashed my vbios back to an earlier rom that have regular voltages. So this problem I believe was cause my the voltages being to low in the vbios I had set earlier trying to lower temps.

This leaves me with solution that my heat issue is solved for now but I am still unsure of my HWinfo64 custom fan settings... if anyone that has the 6990m setup in their m17x r2 and has a good setting for the HWinfo64 that has been working good for them (even under heavy gpu load) then please let me know your settings so I can try them out.
