    Hey guys, I am having some odd temp readings when gaming. I currently have several temp program:

    1. GPU Observer Widget on Desktop---> Reports temps upwards of 90C

    2. MSI Afterburner Monitor w/ In-Game Display --->Reports temps upwards of 90C

    3. HwInfo64---> Doesn't have a monitor but sensors read anywhere from 60-74C

    This is all during gaming. Is this possible? I was under the impression that my clocks would have been throttled at the threshold of 78C?

    I recently repasted my GPU and it has never happened before that point so perhaps I messed up something there.

    Keep in mind this is only during gaming. When the laptop is idling, all programs but HwInfo64 report readings of around 45-50C. HwInfo reports 60-61C for idle temps...

    This is really weird.

    your temps won't hit 90c with a 580m on the alienware so i'd trust hwinfo and not the others.

    If you ever hit 78c, you'd know it right away...performance would be non existant until you went under 78c. It is a hard throttle

    Thanks for the reply.

    I actually did experience throttling for the first time yesterday. For some reason, the fans were not kicking in during gaming and my temps went all the way up to 90C (according to my GPU monitors), resulting in my clocks dropping to 324mhz. The fans would not come on for some reason so I had to force with HwInfo64's fan controller.

    I just repasted using the pea method (I spreaded it out myself the 1st time) and my temps are much more acceptable now. Averaging around 68C now...and my GPU software is reading it correctly. Hope this stays...

    Good to hear CoolBlue! Pea method is better than the spread/credit card method imo and experience.

    Have you applied the throttling fix found on these forums? The clocks dropping to 324 doesn't sound like the temp throttle to me, but the powerthrottle.

    The 580 suffers from 2 throttle points: a power throttle at around mid 60's. The powerthrottle is fixed with widezu's method.

    The second throttle is the temp throttle at 78. This one is not fixable and is a hard drop to 0mhz until temps are lowered and the mhz climb up again

    Should I be worried if the 580M reaches the 78C threshold while running the burn-in test for Furmark? I just ran Furmark and it hit 78C in about 2 minutes at which point it throttled. However, I can game on League of Legends/Battlefield 3 at a comfortable 67-70C.

    I'd actually try to avoid furmark as it has killed quite a few 580m's that I have seen. Furmark pushes your card beyond its limits, and can possibly cause damage. those temps your get while gaming are acceptable so I don't think you should have any reason to worry. :)
