Except the different core position and the necessary heatsink mods which will be something different

Don't have pics obviously but desoldering and flipping the heatplate 180 degrees might be... "easier"?

So now that it got installed , can someone guide me on how to modify which line of the nvidia driver for it to work properly so the laptop chooses the gtx 1080 instead of igpu.

I am at work and away from my laptop , but I want to get all the information/help I can get with the driver so i can dive right in when i get off work.

that is not the MSI GTX 1080, but rather the zotac gtx 1080 mxm pulled from one of their boxes, I'm 90% sure because of that weird hump at the top of the card.

@Rengsey R. H. Jr. good on you mate for experimenting, though I think you'd save yourself a lot of headache by using the 3d panel instead

Forgot about that GPU lol I was thinking of the MSI 1080 with the flipped core

Did you buy a ZBOX or did you manage to source it from somewhere?
EDIT: Its likely not outputting to the internal display if its a ZBOX 1080, they're not natively outputting to a display, try an external display when you get home

It was a Win win solution. I threw the WX7100/RX 480 in the ZBOX EN1080K , and it's water cooled CPU and GPU.

The guy I got the ZBOX from hooked it up for a little under $1300 , which included the barebone plus 32GB RAM , 128GB m.2 , and 4TB storage. I couldn't pass it up. Plus it was new/replacement from Zotac.

That card has a different layout than the MSI one I linked.

This would make the heatsink mod significantly easier. Since the core seems to be at the area it should compared to the one I linked where the core is in the middle.

Thought he used the MSI one, the one you linked is easy to build into his system. Would be interesting to know what the TDP limit is tho.

I realize that this is the m17xr4 but i installed the same card in my alienware 17r1. It will display to internal display but only on 3d screen. The card power throttles because the mxm slot is not able to provide the power needed. I have an external flasher and tried at least 20 vbios. Ultimately the clevo bios i tried allowed me to install modded drivers and the card would function partially but performed at p1 levels unable to maintain full clocks. I adjusted the tdp with coolanes tool but it only makes the vbios unstable. I ended up reflashing the stock zotac vbios and hooking it up to an external monitor it installed no problem but the card power throttled and underperformed once more. Without extreme power modification either through the motherboard or adding additional power to the card this project underperforms in my laptop and is beaten severely by the zotac 1070 which has a tdp of 115w.

The issue is, the MXM slot can only provide up to 180W of power, which comes out to ~150W of reasonable average power avaliable, and this 1080 doesn't have an external connector for the power to be easily routed to. Another point to be made is that this machine was only made for 100-125W TDP GPU's, I wish you good luck though, I see this in my future and if not a 1060 or 1070 SLI

    1) https://mega.nz/#!suJ1QYYI!bBKDBtwuxPhlt_GnlrNOOvpl-EnqIjR9LLjb4X9Ir7U

    2) http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/399.07/399.07-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql.exe

Extract the ZIP file. You need to boot using "disable driver signature enforcement" and run the nVidia installer.

You're in luck, I just had to install the latest drivers for BF:V Beta so:

    setup.cfg goes in: C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\399.07\Win10_64\International

    nv_display.inf & nvdmi.inf goes in: C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\399.07\Win10_64\International\Display.Driver

That's quite a bit different to the P370EM which had no issues feeding 2x 1070's 200W each for 13mins straight completing a GPUPI 1B run.

Ran into an issue regarding power supply. For some reason , the power plug is turned off automatically and uses battery. Is that something windows 10 is doing ?

The laptop is using the dual 330 watts PSU , so it can't be the power supply. Could it just be the laptop itself that is tripping the PSU ?

Could be an internal circuit sensing the MXM slot is requesting too much power, and kicks it off AC power to stop it from burning up and instead switches to battery to force lower clocks/voltage. This is just me spitballing though, I'm not a computer engineer and I can't begin to accurately postulate what the hell is going on here lol

That's very interesting, I'm assuming it's what @Raidriar said. Because the M18x can use dual PSUs fine and if I remember correctly, so can the M17x series. The MXM port must be tripping. Maybe try lowering the clocks and lower the voltage in MSI Afterburner to see if it helps.

Can you post an exact picture of the 1080? I'm curious to see if it'd fit an M18x lol

It won't fit. The extended top piece is touching one of the chip on the motherboard, thus not making the card lat flat.

3D vision is only available on the GPU the laptop shipped with, so a 780M is the max you can use for it IIRC

    I got the 120Hz LCd.

Bad news. I get 8 beeps when I put in PEG mode. The display will not come on. It will come on via HDMI output. Not even in SG mode when using the 120Hz screen.

Other than a LCD that is not 120Hz , it will display fine using SG mode.

Conclusion: The card will display to non 120Hz using SG mode, but will display via HDMI Out in PEG mode. This card cannot do standalone PEG mode. I believe the bios on this Zotac card does not allow it to. It's likely I will not get an external bios flasher anytime soon, I'm gonna give up. :)

This is also the same for the AW 17 R1

I bench 3dmark11 but it power trip And just became very very slow.

But on the AW 17 , it bench fine with no pwr cap since it was using a 300W PSU, but throttle like crazy almost 11K score.

I believe this has already been tried, and even so, he would need to either edit the VBIOS to reduce power draw, or feed the GPU extra power to maintain a score good enough to be considered over the 1070

@Danishblunt has made me a modded nvidia driver , I will give this another try to see if it can bench using GTX 1080 instead of integrated.

8 hours till I get off work though ... lol
