    M17XR2 with GeForce GTX 285M x 2

Is it possible/practical to upgrade my M17XR2 with a newer GPU?

    Or...

Since I have two M17XR2's in really good condition would it be more cost effective if I (try to) sell both and buy a newer model?

I am glad to be able to tell you that the 6970M and 6990M both work, single card and CrossFire.

    6970M/6990M in M17xR2

Sell one of them to cover the cost of the upgrade.
