Recently I been having the odd black screen issue, or sudden reboot when running BF3.
Fans run at Max RPM (4300) for a while before the dump, the laptop is raised on a U3 Cooler (although I have removed the U3 Fans - did not seem to add much cooling)

I track temps using HWINFO64 and the CPUS (2670), hit about 82c, the GPU hits about 65-66c, those to me look fine.
The ones that I am concerned about are labeled PCH - it hits 92-93c and the GPU VRMs, VRM1 hits about 60c, but VRM2 hit 96-97c

So I'm guessing it's a heat issue with the VRM rather than the GPU, although the PCH does seem high as well.

I regualrly clean the vents/fans by taking the fans out and blow dust out (rather than in) the system.

I have extended warranty, so could call Dell/Alienware In, but I guess it would just pass their "can it run office" type tests.
Do a repaste? Well, thought about that but would rather at this stage if the GPU is failing have it replaced. I dont like messing with internals....

Anyone any idea on best course of action, is this a known issue etc.

I'm going to run OCCT to verify if it's BF3 or my system that's the problem - is there anything else suitable.
Apparently FurMark is not recomended by Dell.

FurMark is too tough, try the tools here. If the PC gets above 90C I would recommend the repasting. If hardware needs to be changed just let me know on [email protected] and I'll take care of it.

Thanks for the response, running Heaven hardly stresses the PC compared to BF3, the fans don't hit full blast, and temps hover around 87c for CPU and 64c for GPU, VRM1 hits the 90s.

Using OCCT GPU test the VRM1 hit 100c (which is when I quit for fear of meltdown) but the GPU only hit 65c. I am concerned that a VRM temperature (as reported by HwInfo64) will cause the GPU to fail, it is not something you would repaste either as I guess the repaste involves the GPU die not all the supporting chips.

    What would you recommend?

I'm still getting the odd black screen freeze out on my machine but more often than not I now find that games that used to run fine now have episodes of low FPS.
BF3 for instance usually runs at 50ish most of the time and usually ranges from 30-60 FPS depending upon location. On occasion now it will run at <10FPS for a few seconds then return to normal.
A log using HWInfo shows the GPU clocking down to 73mhz on those occasions, followed by a recovery to 620mhz. Additionally I see that the voltage given to the GPU will drop to 0.8 from 0.87 but when the GPU recovers it can leap to 0.92 for a short while then drops back to 0.87 or 0.8 if its having another slow down.

Just for the record the Black screen issue can occur at almost anytime, not allways (but more frequently) when i'm gaming.
Nvidia Driver is DELL latest (306.97)

Am I best calling DELL to replace the GPU I guess, or is there another solution. (I have Warranty till 2015)
    Thanks.
