will i need a new heatsink?
and if i get it from say an MSI laptop will it work?
will i need to flash it?
is there still throttling issues with the 580m?
would i be better going for a 660m or 675m instead you think?
i want to upgrade for 2 reasons: 1. and most important is better support in Linux, 2. not really a big thing but i want physX.

No the heatsink is the same through all of the GPUs in the Alienware line.
The 675M and 580M are the same thing, just different names. The 675M generally can be had for less...just because it's name isn't as high end as something like the 580M. (Most retailers still sell the 580M for like.... $500+)
I would think that the 675M would be the best bet just because. -
some one is selling a 580m in the market atm for 300usd, seems to be cheaper then any 675m i have found, thats why i was going to go for that will one from an MSI laptop work on the M17Xr3?

Alienware-L_Porras Company Representative
We do have different part numbers for the AMD and nVidia GPU's, It will work later on another PC.
It's better the 580m because it is fully supported on the m17x R3 and you will get optimus working.
M17Xr3 6870m to 580m?
