will i need a new heatsink?
and if i get it from say an MSI laptop will it work?
will i need to flash it?
is there still throttling issues with the 580m?
would i be better going for a 660m or 675m instead you think?

i want to upgrade for 2 reasons: 1. and most important is better support in Linux, 2. not really a big thing but i want physX.

No the heatsink is the same through all of the GPUs in the Alienware line.

The 675M and 580M are the same thing, just different names. The 675M generally can be had for less...just because it's name isn't as high end as something like the 580M. (Most retailers still sell the 580M for like.... $500+)

I would think that the 675M would be the best bet just because. :p

We do have different part numbers for the AMD and nVidia GPU's, It will work later on another PC.
It's better the 580m because it is fully supported on the m17x R3 and you will get optimus working.
