    Hey, I recently upgraded my GTX 260M that my laptop came with and replaced it with a GTX 670M. My PC is recognizing the gpu as being installed in device manager but when I go to plat games like Battlefield 3 it does not use the card. It uses the onboard 9800 and the gameplay is terrible. Everything was fine with the GTX 260M. I understand the hybrid SLI is no longer supported in the newest set of drivers. I reverted back to the older set of drivers that do support it and it still did not work. Anyone have any ideas? Any help is appreciated.

    Wait are you talking about an R1? R2 doesn't have an onboard 9400M...and I don't think an R1 can support newer Kepler GPU's without disabling onboard 9400M completely.

    Sorry I meant to say 9400M. I'm pretty sure I have an R2. I bought it Dec. 2009

    What CPU do you have? Is it a Core 2 Duo/Quad or an i5/i7?

    UPDATE: I got the computer to recognize the new GTX 670m. The issue now is the PC is defaulting back to the 9400M and not using the new card. Everything I have tried has not yielded me results.

    Is it possible to disable the integrated drivers in the bios? I would try that if you can.

    The only way to disable the integrated card in the bios is to disable hybrid graphics first. Then disable integrated graphics.

    Well does turning them all off make everything run better? I personally would just turn all the integrated stuff off and see how well it works.

    That results in the screen blinking random colors at me after the windows logo disappears.

    Hello, dgraham128, your system is indeed a M17x (M17x R1).

    Make sure it's plugged in otherwise it will default to the 9400M at next boot.
    How is the screen before the windows logo? It might be a driver issue.

    Can you try to plug an external monitor via VGA?

    It's plugged in properly. The screen before the windows logo is the alienware logo. I have tried three of the most recent drivers. All seem to not work properly. Optimus does not seem to be functioning.

    As you can see it is defaulting the the 9400M no matter what I do.

    You can't have Optimus on this system.
    So, if you disable the 9400M and hybrid SLi in BIOS while plugged, the screen flashes no matter what driver version you have installed?

    How about the POST screen, is it showing properly after disabling the integrated (the laptop runs off of the 670M) ?

    It flashes no matter which driver I have installed. I tried hooking it up to an external monitor and it was working through the 670M. When I loaded up BF3 to test I get this error after about 45 seconds after it loading.

    DirectX function "m_adapter->EnumOutputs(0,
    &m_output.assignGet())" failed with DXGI_ERROR_NOT_FOUND: The
    item requested was not found. For GetPrivateData calls, this means that
    the specified GUID had not been previously associated with the object..

    I own an R1 as well... Sorry to say but the R1 will not support that card due to Bios/chipset... As a matter of fact it does not even support the 400M series cards, i've been down this road, sorry for the news, might wanna try and get a barebones R2 unless you plan on returning the card. View link below for someone who took on the R1s very limited capabilities and ran into tons of issues. (trust me i would upgrade my R1 if possible)

    6970m and original M17x (a.k.a. R1)

    Sorry to bump an old thread, but in summary - ONLY 5870 CF work for Alienware M17x-R1 right?
