The Nvidia 'Is your PC ready for...' tells me my 580m is below the recommended specs for Max Payne 3. Ruining my pre-order anticipation - tell me it 'aint so![]()

Micky, that has to be a mistake. It would be business suicide for them to create a game that had such high min specs -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Thanks, I bo-boo'd 'recommended' not 'minimum' but still a mistake i HOPE -
Its a console port, your laptop will spit in its face and curse it mother and...er...play it really well

It seems like anybody with a laptop would be below those recommended specs, since a GTX 680 or HD 7970 will beat everything except perhaps crossfired 7970m's in the M18X.
That said, my three year old Dell XPS meets the minimum specs (they read almost exactly as "my computer's specs"), so I'm sure you will be fine. -
Wow I have a pre-order too. I feel like my setup is inferior already
-
In my experience, this usually means computer hardware needs to be even better to make up for sloppy ports!
Here's hoping those specs are wrong also. Haven't jumped on MP3 since I have too many other things to distract me, but it looks pretty awesome, and I anticipated people using it to bench their lappies in the not too distant future! -
Im expecting my laptop will play it on 1080p and high settings. It blitzed gta IV and, as far as im aware, it uses the same, if enhanced, game engine.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
looks like this game will be heavy on graphics cards. Don't know if its because it is a console port OR they really made the PC version look spectacular. I'm hoping for the latter -
You fellas do know that these requirements are RANGE based right? What I mean is that anything between the minimum and recommended should run the game fairly well. Common sense dictates that the more powerful your system, the faster software will perform, as has been the norm since the dawn of time.
As a software developer working for a current-gen game software company, system requirements are based off strict QA testing, so these requirements that you're all freaking out over are just a guideline to follow, nothing more, nothing less. They could have had exact requirements for a more optimal gaming experience, but they chose not to. If anyone remembers L.A. Noire's system requirements, the company did the exact same deal there. No surprise they did this again. Anyone who thinks otherwise is misinformed and is making things up.
If you can run GTA IV/Liberty City Stories, you can run this just fine, if not better. -
We do get it but seeing that your card if below the recommended gpu kinda makes you feel that you can't play it anymore on maxed settings.
I can feel now that my 580m is really aging
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk 2 -
Laptop graphics cards aren't meant to be on the same level as desktop counterparts. So if a GTX 680 was REALLY necessary (again, NO.), there wouldn't even be a laptop version of it to compete. Your 580M is MORE than capable of running this game, and will fly through it. There's no ifs, ands, or butts. Pending driver issues of course, but the raw horsepower is there.
If everyone felt this way, you'd be upgrading left and right, going broke within a few months. If I felt like my '12 model car was outdated, I'd be broke within the year, because the 2013 has extra features that I can't have. Idk, think what you want everyone. -
Recommended system specs and all those system scanners etc first of all don't read laptop hardware properly and also are basing on a 60FPS target. They expect 8xAA, 16xAF etc with a minimum of 60fps even though 30fps is fully playable especially with 3rd person game like Max Payne. The 580m will probably get around 30-40fps on full with 2-4xAA and ultra everything else hence why they deem it to fall under the spec.
I wouldn't worry about it. Really. -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Thanks to all you guys for your input. I'm not alone in feeling my 'high-spec' card just got pushed into the second grade
.
They are claiming all sorts of PC specific coding like ambient occlusion, physX, DX11, etc, so I'm hoping that it pushes (but not exceeds) my HW to see what my AW is capable of! 6 days and counting... -
Yeah I hope that it will look nice and come with decent gameplay. I'm not too fond of the move away from the classic noir style because that was great from the previous installments.
I hope PhysX isn't going to add too much because I'm rockin' red at the moment. I might just have to change back to my trusty ol' green. -
Well to be fair, your 580 was already behind the 7970m... but anyway, I suspect it'll be fine. If the standard is going to be a GTX 680, you're not going to be able to see any laptops running it. That doesn't make business sense.
-
lol, same here. I have the 6990m beast card but when the 7970m came out i fell like it did get pushed out of the way. Anyway it still runs everything good though, its not time to get the 7970m yet imo. Im also hoping that the quality of max payne 3 is really good like alan wake from xbox to pc.
-
Last december, I was on a PIII 1000MHz computerm which lived with me for 11 years ..
I thought I will be years away from such questions ,, -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Yeah, I know I'm a bit behind the curve in the GPU wars but I love my 3D Vision so I can only hope the 680M is the killer they are hoping for
One of those moments, I was just thinking 'I'd like it to have the same noir feel as Alan Wake'. So far I've been happy to see how much better the games that I've played on XBox look on the PC. -
i think if you can run Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 with ultra settings and 1080p then Max Payne 3 will run the same. You will probably just have to lower the AA.
-
Yeah... I've never been big on 3D technology, so it was something I was completely prepared to live without - hence favouring the Radeon card over Nvidea.
A shame you didn't want to go the desktop route - the 680 and 690 kill the 7970 according to the benchmarking I've seen. -
On alotta games, I can turn off AA altogether, and then simply use this SMAA injector to add AA with very little impact on FPS. I am having a breeze running through Metro2033 thanks to this, and when I get hold of MP3, I planned to do the same thing to help make up ground on my 5870s
-
SMAA is awesome, I use it for Skyrim... was better than any other AA for it, better than MSAA, etc.
Also;
-
The 580m should be just below the 560 Ti and above the 560.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
very interesting. I may try this if i run into a game that is giving me headaches. Thanks for the info...rep you when i can
Is there info on how this game runs on ATI hardware? -
Yeah, I believe you have to look under GTX 570 ^^

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Lest we forget the purpose of the Is your PC Ready . . . campaign -- "See the Benefits of Upgrading."
-
Exactly. When a company develops their game in conjunction with nvidia, it is for one reason, money. Like when BF3 came out and all the smug reps telling people that those with GTX 580 SLi will all be safe, those without may not be. It's all marketing. I expect to pull at least 40FPS in this game using my 580m. Yes I'm back with green for now, my red is up for grabs.
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Sigh, yes you're right but when there is no upgrade option it bites -
Hmmm... I wasn't really looking to buy MP3 any time soon, although I think the MP series is great and actually do wanna play this... some day. But now I just saw on Steam if you pre-purchase you get LA NOIRE for free... and I kinda also wanna play that... some day. Dammit, I hate getting sucked into deals like this!
Walk away pookie, walk away...
-
The tesselation might hurt us notebook guys without dual cards at high resolutions, but dont expect it to drop to unplayable levels. But then again the 7970 should eat it up.
My 6970 might go down to 20fps at max settings seing how it does not handle tittleation too well. -
PC Gamer today reported that the specs for MP3 have changed;
HIGH RECOMMENDED SPECS
Windows 7/Vista (32 or 64 bit)
Intel i7 Quad Core 2.8Ghz or AMD equivalent
3GB System RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce 480 1GB RAM or AMD Radeon™ HD 5870 1GB RAM
This certainly seems much more favourable! But I suppose it remains to be seen just what is exactly what.
EDIT:- and from their website...
"The game will still run great using the Lowest Tested Specs, but the High Recommended Specs will allow you to comfortably run the game at 60fps with high detail at 1080p."
Great news!... if it's indeed the case ! -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
yes! Thanks for spotting that, like a lot of people said, they had probably overspecified it and it must have hurt sales. Nvidia are still using the 'old' specs but it's early days - though not a good time (pre-release) to be telling people they can't play it as a decent frame rate:
'Your PC's NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M is below the game's recommended specification.'
We shall see
-
Conversely they are underspecifiying it now, maybe?
Could they get away by doing that?
But as you said, we shall see! I'm still on the fence as it whether or not to pick this up now, even though I promised myself to vastly restrict the number of games I buy this year! But I wanna be part of the inevitable bench/fps thread you guys have running post release!
-
This is a Day 1 buy for me. Huge fan of Max Payne. Played the dog sh*t out of the first two. I remember playing the demo's when they were out for hours at a time, replaying the same scenes over and over again. Just couldn't stop. I'm surprised this one didn't have a demo as well, would have been nice.
I'll be picking up a physical copy on Friday, honestly don't feel like downloading 30 gigs on steam. -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Yes I'm looking forward to some interesting tests - oh no, just checked as I should have got the download today and gameplanet have moved it out till tomorrow
-
Hey you crazy cats!
Just thought I'd check in to see who is managing to get their Max Payne 3 preload, preloaded! The Steam forums are all abuzz with annoyed, angsty ppl complaining about the short time frame they've been given to get their preloads sorted before release in ... ~7hrs now I think. Does seem rather silly to give ppl less than 24hrs to download all those GBs, especially when you factor in the inevitable immense server loads
Anyway, gd luck to those of you brave enough to take on the 35GB download (I calculated my poor 4.5Mb connection would take ~20hrs to d/l all that!). Here's hoping you all get nice frame rates, and none of that shoddy port business! It was hard for me to pass up MP3, but I shall live vicariously through all my M17x brothers!
And in case it helps any XFIRE'ers, AMD just stuck up the latest (beta) CAP for MP3.
Take care, good luck, report back!
... oh, and happy gaming! Haha, almost forgot games are there to be played and not just benchmarked
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
No joy here
I pre ordered from gamesplanet. First email said I'd get my download on the 29th. When that did not arrive I checked and they moved it out to the 1st at 00:01. Went to check again and they have moved it out to 05:00! gits. I get free internet overnight but this download during the day will eat up all my allowance for the rest of the month. Looks like I wasted a pre-order since I will have to wait another day.
Won't be using them again! No notifications at all, they just change the dates/times and wait for you to find out. Yes, Mr Angry typing
Edit: Just checked again and it went out another hour - like I'm gonna wait till 6am, well if I wake up, off now -
I think the spec checker is not recognizing the speed of the 580m. It says a regular 560 desktop will run the game in all high settings. A 560 desktop has like 330 cores and runs at 800 mhz. Our 580m has 380 cores and with a painless OC will run at 700+ mhz. The 580m should easily outperform a stock 560 desktop, so if it can run the game at high the 580m should be able to as well.
-
Man, i feel for you bro. On my 100Mb i literally get 35gb in under an hour
depending on steam, of course. -
im at 53%...sucks! i just want to play it already.
anyone play it yet and how is it with graphic requirements? -
will post in about 20min with results.
edit: got an error during patching and now reinstalling. results will come later -
Yea, some (many?) ppl over on the Steam forums have been talking about launch errors, but the views generally seem pretty positive so far I think. Certainly seems as though the revised specs were about right and ppl are managing to run this then pretty well with maxxed settings
>>> still, I wanna hear how fellow NBR'ers are faring! -
yea i hear ya wonderpookie...i hope i dont get any install problems once it downloads. its such a huge file...30GB...why? it better be along game.
-
I have the retail version and after two reinstall and pataching sessions the same error keeps happening.
Does anyone know what this means?

I've heard mention of good, extensive use of tessellation being the reason for the big size.
Really sorry to hear that timurStas. Perhaps try asking over on the Steam forums too. Good luck.
EDIT:-

>>> suggests it's a driver issue? Have you tried reinstalling/installing the latest drivers for your card? -
I wish my 7970m when get here so I could utilize all the tess. My 6990m can only do so much. 56%....geez the internet is so slow over here in okinawa... i miss my Verizon Fios...
-
im actually on the latest nvidia driver (may 22 release). do you suggest maybe rolling back?
EDIT
I seemed to find a fix - run with integrated. I dont have time now to test the game, but when I do I will post some performance benchmarks. -
hey timurstas, ur drivers are more than likely not the problem. Now a days games have been having bad release errors and problems, i.e. rage, diablo 3...
-
Fuzzy may be right. timurstas, you are definitely not alone - ppl complaining of failed launches over on Steam forums - I think your best bet is reading through posts there and seeing what fixes gamers have tried. I even read someone talking about manually installing Games-for-Windows-Live (GfWL), and that somehow fixing their problem ... MP3 isn't even a GfWL game, is it?
Just keep trying fixes from ppl with a similar problem until one hits. It may well just be a launch day bug as Fuzzy suggested.
edit:-
There's also Rockstar support over on Twitter you could perhaps try.
