Same problem. Settings detecting 0mb of Video Memory. Running on a Radeon 6990m.
Any fixes?
-
-
Do what I said above.
-
-
-
I found a solution for 0MB problem : just add -availablevidmem x000 to your Max Payne 3 shortcut. (x being the number of gigs of graphics memory). No it runs smooth and beautiful!
-
Is there a way to do this if you have the boxed version and not through Steam?
-
Hi guys, i can run Max Payne 3 only with integrated graphics card. When i start MP3 with Nvidia 540M - program stopped running. Do you have any suggestion?
I tried almost everything without succes.
Thanks. -
Yes just put a shortut to your desktop then right click->properties and under the target add -availablevidmem x000 at the end (dont forget to put a space in between) and i even think there is a "launching option" where you can put it under steam
-
Well, Killerofgnom's fix has worked for me, so thank you very much!
I've had all of the issues. Stuck on Initializing... very long loading times... only using the Integrated GFX card.... Good gfx but stuttering while it loads the next part.
I should say that I've been looking around a few forums for all the fixes and basically what I did, instead of changing the shortcut I did this:
(This is for Steam, I suspect that for the boxed version, rather than putting it in the Steam folder, you just find the Max Payne 3 folder in Program Files)
FIRSTLY.... My M17x has an ATI Radeon 68xx Card, so I used the Catalyst Control Centre to switch to 'High Performance GPU'.
THEN
Create a file called commandline.txt in the path... C:\program files (x86 if on 64bit)\steam\steamapps\common\max payne 3\Max Payne 3
In that text file, add the following lines, changing the numbers to how high you want the settings to be, 0-3, 0 being low and 3 being high - start with them all on 0 to start with..... Like killerofgnom says, the available vidmem should be what memory your card has. So for 2gb, put 2000.
-dx11
-frameLimit 2
-fxaa 0
-MSAA 0
-MSAAQuality
-reflectionquality 0
-shadowquality 0
-ssao 0
-tessellation 0
-texturefilterquality 0
-texturequality 0
-useHighQualityShaders 0
-waterquality 0
-availablevidmem 2000
This has worked perfectly for meI hope it helps others.
-
I have retail version of this game, but this dont work for me
-
Crosshair, does the nVidia card have an equivalent of the Catalyst Control Centre where you can 'force on' the card of the integrated gfx? It might be in the system tray, near the clock?
Or does Fn+F7 work?
It might just be an AMD Radeon function though -
Hi AlienAl,
i have Nvidia control center, for maxpayne 3 i have set primary graphics card GT 540M.But when i run MP3 from desktop with 540 - progamme stopped working, only worked when i start with integrated graphics card.
Fn - F7 - my notebook dont have this possibility. -
Thanks to this thread i can play now
It wouldnt see my high perf grafix card but used the built in junk instead on my 4820tg. Its still only showing half the vram but im sure something will come up. I cant change any settings in the grafix in game beccause it wants me to restart the game then reverts. There are some things in the command text missing from the ingame settings.....but oh welll least i can play now -
My problem on a M17xR3 with a 6990m regarding Max Payne 3 seeing no graphics memory seems to have been solved. I have the non steam version, so I don't know if this will work with the steam edition. Create a shortcut of "PlayMaxPayne3.exe" on your desktop, right click on the shortcut and go to target window. At the target window leave a space and add the line, -availablevidmem x000 , where X is the amount of gb of ram that your card has. It will look like this: PlayMaxPayne3.exe" -availablevidmem 2000. This worked for me and allowed me to change graphic settings in game! Now lets blow away some bad guys!
-
Just update the driver to 12.4 and I can change the graphic settings. Everything run smoothng and perfect now
-
Tried command file, editing the shortcut, instaling in its own directory, ati 12.4 & 12.6 with and without cap and still no joy
Game loads and gets to the intro video where the guy is opening the door to his apartment then screen goes black"........
Why is it nothing works these days, should just install and play more or less the same with all my steam games to messing about with different drivers for different games, gets to be a pain in the a s s! . My go back to gaming on the Xbox. -
I tried kospan's idea but it didn't work for me. The updater box appears, the fan comes on for the graphics card and then the updater box disappears.
I hope there is a patch soon, can't wait to play this game. -
oh and i tried just 'renaming' the file 'maxpayne3' and 'playmaxpayne3' in order to add the line ' -availablevidmem2000', but then it won't launch the game reading "could not locate Max Payne 3 game executable on local machine. please re-install".
any ideas/help? -
Kungura, right click on your shortcut, go to properties and click on target window. My target window looks like this, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 3\PlayMaxPayne3.exe" -availablevidmem 2000 . I have installed the game at its default directory on a 64bit system and my card has 2gb of Ram hence the number 2000. Hope that helps!
-
It's been said about 14 times now. There is no Command Line, you have to CREATE a notepad or text file WITHIN the installation path for Max Payne 3. What does an installation path mean? Well, if you installed it STEAM, it should be in: Program Files x86/Steam/steamapps/common/Max Payne 3/PUT IT HERE
If you bought it from ANYWHERE BUT Steam, it'll go into (generally...): Program Files x86/Rockstar Games/Max Payne 3/PUT IT HERE
The file you will make is called commandline.txt -
Hi
I know you've said it has been said a lot but it still doesn't work for me. I have the boxed version and within the Max Payne 3 folder is a launcher icon. When you right click on that it does not have a target window option. There is a separate launcher under the start menu which does have a target window option and I can edit that but it simply links to the Max Payne 3 folder launcher so it it won't work (hope that makes sense). Are you saying I should delete the launcher in the Max Payne 3 folder and create a file called command line?
Just a noob so still learning....
It really does seem that this is on the right track but need to hear from someone with a non-steam boxed version who got this option to work please. -
Thank You Very Much For Sharing Killerofgnom!!! It's members like you that make this website and forum so great! I previously only had 1.5gb of available VRAM and with your help I now have 2gb available. Do you know how I can tell if I'm running Max Payne 3 with my GeForce-650M or my IvyBridge-HD4000? -
I still did not succed Gerry, the game still won't launch with the gtx 675m...
I tried many things and don't know what to do anymore...
I give up, all I do is wasting my time -
It worked great and u saved my Max Payn game.. Thank You!
I'm a big fan of the MP series and really wanted to play the game (and I can can do this now thanks to you)
Sorry if my English is bad. -
What settings can i play with in the command text to turn on shadows and reflections. I cant turn them on in the game because it wants me to restart the game then it all defaults back to off
EDIT:
Oh darn i need a fix for my card better than it is. The settings arent taking. I have this set in the file but they are off ingame
-outputMonitor Force specific monitor starting from 0.
-reflectionquality Force reflection quality 3[0..3].
-refreshrate Force refresh rate.
-shadowquality Force shadow quality 3[0..3]. -
Thnx to this thread I have a now working Max Payne 3 with my beautiful 6990m AMD card which ps - RoX with this game...

There is a patch out for the game which seems to be on the right track. Just a quick update. The patch is applied and definitely on the right track now. The game launches and all options are available but when I change to DX11 the game says is must restart to apply changes. When I do that the game stiops responding and locks on that screen. I have to press ctrl, alt, del to exit.
I tried launching using the onscreen settings, DX9, low screen resolution and the game started. I went to the options screen by pressing esc from within the game and changed the settings again. This time I was able to change the screen resolution but only to 40hz not 60hz which is what my screen is. If I try to change to DX10 or DX11 the screen freezes and I have to exit as above. So I can still only play the game using DX9 but it seems to be using the graphics card to play it as the fan is on all the time but I can't be sure.
Anyone else with the same issue after the patch?
Has anyone with the boxed/non-Steam game found a proper workaround. I think to add the command line you need to have the game on Steam, is that correct?
thanks for any help or advice. -

Hi, well I've got a weird problem with this game. I have the 580m with the 120hz display so no issues with the iGpu and game runs fine BUT, I thought that the something was missing from the detail of the game. I can set all the options to max, but I don't see any great improvement and I'm seeing huge frame rates - 100-220 FPS most of the time with it dropping to around 60 when outside, in the rain, with a bunch of bad guys attacking..
The afterburner OSD is telling me I'm in DX11 and I can switch without problem to DX9.
I only realized when I saw a video yesterday of some gameplay and there was far more detail than I am seeing.
I checked the Nvidia profile for the game and it all looks the same as the default settings but Vsync makes no difference to the frame rate, either at the driver level or in the game - just seeing what it does.
Memory is OK with the correct amount showing and usage goes up as I select more options
Does anyone else with this setup (retail copy as well maybe) see very high frame rates? I think some setting or other is not happening causing it to run fast without a lot of the detail.
I am using the 301.42 driver but I tried 296.10 (clean install) with the same results.
My R4 is due in tomorrow so if it's just me I'll pass on trying to figure it out since I'm sure I'll have a new set of challenges -
Ok so I bought this game only to find out it doesn't work. Apparently theres a massive problem with it working right on a lot of PC's. I have the retail version with a serial key. I have tried almost every fix imaginable and still cannot work out how to work it.
I ran it in safe mode once, it allowed me to sign in to social club and register my key. But when I try to play it normally it sits on the max payne 3 logo and won't go any further. No sign in, no cd key authorisation... nothing.
Tried reinstalling 20 times now and still it comes back with this error.
repaired .net framework 4, installed C++ and directx is all up to date. I enabled my firewall to give full permissions to the game, I renamed the folder without spaces and changed the regedit pathway, I tried offline mode, transferring all the linked files from C:/ drive to my game drive (A:/). Tried tabbing out at logo and starting renderer.exe (which does nothing by the way, just a blue loading circle next to my mouse arrow and then.... nothing).
I updated to the latest version too but still rockstar have not fixed it.
Any ideas?
what could it be that safe mode does that normal mode won't?
EDIT: Now it won't work in normal mode either. Lame. -
Not an Alienware owner (MSi GT60 here) but just thought it would be nice to let you guys know there's a new patch for MP3 which was put up early hours this morning. Patched mine and it now boots up using my GTX 670m instead of my integrated card.

I'm really sick of that intro screen now it makes me seasick and its soured my enjoyment of the game really. Everyone has a solution but the real problem is Rockstar for trying to do PC games when they are a console developer now. They are behind the times and struggling to produce an all round PC game. Its a shame I might have enjoyed this if not for this silly (very petty) error.
-
You need some perspective and patience brother.
All games have release problems, regardless of the developer. Couple that with the fact that now more than at any time in PC gaming history, there are thousands (millions?) of possible hardware configs. Then remember finally that you are on a gaming laptop, a rung further on the hardware ladder (being still pretty "niche" as it is), which developers are going to be slower to roll out support for, although this is definitely getting better.
The fun in playing on PC's isn't just superior graphics fidelity - it's all the fiddle-elity of tweaking a game and the system to get the game to run the way you want (or at all in some cases like this!) rather than a one-size-fits-all approach of consoles. If you game on a PC and expect every game to run 100% perfect right from the get-go, you really are gaming on the wrong platform. It isn't a sad state of affairs, so much as it is PC gaming - we must suffer for our chosen art, both in wallet and in time/patience. Again, if you can't get on board with that, you are gaming on the wrong platform, and especially so if gaming on a lappy!
But honestly, ranting like you have done in a thread where people are trying their best to help, it's just bad form. -
wonderpookie, I am a little frustrated but this is not a rant, as I said I have loads of other games (that worked fine straight out of the gate...just saying) I'm just posting my problem up here too in the hope somebody may be able to help. I then had another game and thought i would play it only to find it wasn't working too. Thought I would stick a bit of humour into the situation and add the bit at the end.
Please don't say I have bad form. considering the situation I think I'm in good humour.
apologies for any mis communication, I'm fine. Playing Old Republic at the mo.
now back to the subject at hand. -
To be honest I think that Rockstar are doing their best. I have been in touch with support by email and they have been very good at replying and keeping me in the loop.
Unfortunately while the new patch does allow me to play the game using the 580m, at least I think it does because the fan is on the way it usually is when I play graphics intensive games, it won't allow me to select DirectX 11, the screen freezes if I try to do that.
I got this computer to allow me to play games like BF3 and have them look much better than on the xbox and most pc games have worked great straight out of the box with no issues and I have been happy with my choice. It is frustrating however that this kind of problem can happen for some developers.
I'm convinced that Rockstar are determined to have everyone have a good gameplaying experience and say so on their support page so I'm sure there will be more patches. Until then if anyone has any more ideas especially for the retail version please let me know. -
So I take it the patch I mentioned didn't work for those still suffering problems with the game ( I couldn't run the game unless I selected the integrated card, which has now been fixed in today's patch)
Or has everyone pirated the game -
not yet, bought it legitimately and want to keep it that way so I can play multiplayer. hope rockstar come up with it soon, I can understand a bit of a poor framerate, stuttering and bugs but to not be able to start the game at all is a real bummer. Anyone find any new work arounds for getting of the initializing page?
-
Have you tried launching the game and letting the auto patcher download and install todays patch? Before today I could only start the game using my integrated card. Quick try after downloading the new patch this mornig before work and my Nvidia card now works and I can play with everything on high with DX11.
-
I updated it but still to no avail, ho hum.
I'm going to re install the game and then see what happens when it updates. Doubt it will do much though it got me to the loading screen at least. I checked social club online and it has acknowledged my game but still won't load game. The social club function doesn't kick in.
When you click on the Renderer.exe program what is actually meant to happen? It does nothing for me except add a folder called Locales to the social club folder. I look in it but it's empty. Any ideas on what its actually meant to do when you click on it?
hmmm reinstalled it but social club folder is missing now. Must have not uninstalled properly. I tried to re install but it says a newer version is already installed. I think its telling lies.
how very dare it...
removing registrations too to make sure it doesn't do that again.
AAAAAAAnd the result is: Nothing. Nada, zip, negativo.
anyone put the game on their second hard drive instead of C:/ drive. I have mine on the A:/ drive.
I have copied the social club folder from the "Rockstar" C:/ drive folder to the "Rockstar" folder on the A:/ drive.
I have also copied over the two folders "Max Payne 3" and "Social club" from my documents on the C:/ drive to my my documents folder on the A:/ drive.
This has done nothing for the process at all.
I have also taken the spaces out of the folder name and changed the regedit to accomodate the new name. I have also changed the regedit for the social club folder to accomodate the new place on the A:/ drive.
Can anybody think of anything else to transfer over/change? -
Just to be clear in my case the patch now allows me to run the game with the 580m but even though it shows the option for DX11 when I select it the game freezes on that screen and I have to ctrl, alt, del to exit.
So now I can play the game but only in DX9, a better situation than last week. I have the retail version because I always like to have the cd's but maybe not in this case... -
Directx 11 is great but I have no problem with 9. I reckon a few tweaks will allow rockstar to iron out the bugs most people are encountering in the next week or two. Hopefully they will have a simpler set up so as not to make social club and the exe application sync up better. Its very confusing.
Does anyone else have a 560M graphics card that got the game working properly? -
I have a 560m, 16gb ram, and an i7. Everything run buttery smooth on high but I only can get into 1 out of 5 multiplayer games. It constantly hangs on the loading screen. I can alt-tab out but it just forever "loads".
-
U can try this. rename the folder from "x:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 3" to "x:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\MaxPayne3" (remove the space)
and then try to change install path registry from regedit.
enjoy it. -
Hello guys, sorry if im a bit beginner here. I have Gefore GT 540M, and I tried every single solution I read in this very helpful thread. I used -dx10,10_1,11 and all those command lines. The only thing works for me is -availablevidmem 1000 syntax which increased the 512 MB memory to 1000 MB now. However, I still do not see DX 11 in the game graphic option and when I set the DX 10.1 it get defaults back to DX9. Any new solutions? tnx in advance guys
-
btw, I tried this syntax availablevidmem 1000, but still needs restart the game and once i do same story happens, nothing changes... plz someone can help?
-
Thanks to Alienware M17x, I think I am the only person (as far as I can tell) to play Max Payne 3 at Intensive Care Unit
killing tons of people, and trying to keep just 3 alive through the night
I just had to share this with somebody .. -

Hey, for all Nvidia Optimus laptop owners, attention:
It does work, I found a video how to do it. How To Fix MAX PAYNE 3 DirectX 11 and memory problem. - YouTube
You need to run -dx11 and -adapter 1 with it in commandline for PlayMaxPayne3 shortcut.
Also, I updated to patch 47 before I did this. There is patch 49 out now.
My 540m 1366x768 laptop does run very good in DX11 mode now at medium-high settings. I could max it with no trouble.
I hope this solves the issue with switching back to dx9 now once and good for all.
PS. Running VMware Workstation 8.04 in background makes Max Payne 3 lag so bad, but once I shut off it, it runs very good. Conflict? I think yes.
I will try again with VMware to see if there is something of configuration of WMware that have problem with it. -
