Hi everyone i am thinking of getting the WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 - Beyond HD (900p) - Dual CCFL instead of the WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 - Beyond HD (1200p) - Dual CCFL due to better game performance in the future at native resolution and to save money.
what you guys think, will i suffer from the 1440x900, my old laptop is 1920 x 1200 and struggled to play games at this resolution after the first year and the desktop was far too small.
anyone who has the 1440x900 screen for the M17x could you tell me what its like as well as others who know which is better
Thank You

omg luke will u stop it with all these "is this better than this" topics. Go with the 1920x1200. Simple.
-
It would be a waste .... Trust me it would be wise to cut out 1 GPU just to add the RBG LED. It will run faster yes but you would sacrifice quality for speed?
The M17x doesn't and won't have a problem running games at 1900 resolution for a long time. -
No need to hammer the guy that hard not everybody is a computer junie.
I do agree these question have been answered before and could/should be posted in the owners lounge -
I am sorry,
I thought I would open a new topic which was about a separate argument.
I did a search but none of them really give many opinions on if the 1440 x 900 and those that did didnt come from people who own this size screen.
In the Uk we cant get the RGB LED so its purely the screen size of 1440 x 900 im asking is this ok for gaming?
the 1920 x 1200 screen costs £80 more to upgrade to and im guessing there must be many people here who have the 1440 x 900 screen with the m17x who could share their feelings. -
I prefer the 1440*900 for single GPU for sure.
The dual 280m or 4870 cards are actually fast enough to power most games 1920*1200 at 60 fps. There are a handful of exceptions like GTA IV and Crysis.
I really like the standard CCFL screen too. I'd get an RGB LED at the same price, but I would not pay extra for one. -
Hello luke
I was struggled in this question too when I buy m17x. My previous laptop has a 15'' screen with 1680x1050 res, it is really brilliant on showing movies and pictures but it is also really terrible for the text size unless you changed the DPI but there are lots of softwares which do not support this setting on XP...
So this time, I choosed the WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 on M17x. And I've to say it is even better than I thought. In 1440 x 900 res. I can play MW2 with over 60FPS(without AA) in a single GTX 260M...And obviously I can read some documents easier.
Hope this experience can help you to find what you need...
Thanks -
that said, the 1440*900 isn't that bad of a choice.
when i first got my desktop 2 years ago it was 4 grand with dual 8800 ultras.
because of my budget limit i was forced to settle on a 19 inch 1440 x 900 monitor.
let me tell you, it works just fine, i was able to see everything on highest detail and still sweet. your 17 inch monitor would be even more clearer because the screen size is smaller then my 19 inch. -

Lewdvig makes good points.
Your resolution of 1440x900p is fine for fast gaming, but there's a problem. With dual GPU solutions, especialy SLi, you risk bottlenecking the performance at lower resolutions.
The more you want to rely on GPUs and less on CPU bandwidth, the higher the resolution you need; 1920x1200p is considered the ideal resolution for maximising the dual GPU setup. 1440x900 is what I have found to be the bare-minimum starting point - any lower and your cards will be bottlenecked, until and unless you're running a lot of antialiasing in something graphically intensive like Crysis.
So for dual cards, you'd actually be better off going for 1920x1200p simply to get the most out of the GPU setup. -
My old eyes like the lower resolution too. When not gaming that is important.
-
well he's actually talking about future proofing his laptop.
sure an sli setup can handle games now at 60fps. but that wont be the case a year from now.
iveu sed both a fhd and 1440x900 screen. there is a difference for sure, but like many have said, 1440x900 is not a bad resolution at all.
the rgb screen of the AW m17x is one of the best out there ive heard, but if you plan on hangin on to your AW for a long time , then the lower resolution makes a lot of sense.
just my 2 bits -
I agree.. I'm happy with 1440x900. Only thing that bothers me about it right now is inability to benchmark properly cuz resolution not supported
-
1400x900 is the max resolution I'd want on a 17" screen. Save yourself some money, and if you want to play games in 1900x1080, just plug your laptop into a larger screen like a TV with HDMI.

If you can afford it and are getting it with dual GPU's and want the absolute best image quality go with the 1920x1200 RGB LED screen.
Edit: as they don't offer RGB in your area and you are unwilling or unable to wait for it, get the 1920x1200 CCFL as it will have a better image quality than the 1440x900. -
-
retarded logic. you can always run games at lower (but ratio-wise equivalent) resolutions. for example, i run crysis at 1280 x 800 (if you divide 1920 by 1200 you get 1.6, multiple 1.6 by 800 and guess what you get? 1280).
You always want the best, most beautiful screen. don't be a deucher. -
-
The M17x will play games fine in 1200p resolutions. Though at first the text will seem very very small, but you'll get used to it. -
I agree get the RGB LED screen, even f you have to wait a few weeks worth the wait.
-
-
Just get what you can afford better that then over streatch yourself and regret the dicision later.

If you have dual GPU then 1200p please!
If you have single GPU, it depends on what kinda games you wanna play. There are not so many games like Crysis or GTA IV.
Watching 1080p movies on higher solution makes a big difference.
If you have external screen, 1200p does not matter much.
But the forum is where people find helps

A laptop screen is not like RAM, it's not easy to just upgrade it later. I'd say if you're not sure, go for the better screen - unless your vision is bad, in which case you'll probably prefer the lower DPI of the 1440x900 screen. -

1080p vs 720p in movies is a HUGE difference.
LED vs CCFL: GIGANTIC difference.
Off topic: Consumer headphones vs Audiophile headphones: NIGHT and DAY difference

If you will suffice with WXGA on this Alienware, I'm afraid you're missing the point.
If you want single GPU and lower res, step down for an M15x or NP8690
And I would surely hope that no one here is trying to save a buck while purchasing a two thousand dollar laptop so they can keep food in their belly and pay rent. -
I'm sorry. I don't know why I felt the urge to say that.
On topic - if having dual GPU's and such isn't so important, the M15x and NP8690 are excellent suggestions. Of course, if you want a 17" screen, you want a 17" screen.

I probably would have got the 1920x1200 screen for my M17 if I could have paid for it at the time but to an extent, I'm glad I didn't.
While I've never experienced 1920x1200, I can say that 1440x900 is fine by itself. Also, it allows me to play every single game I have except Crysis maxed out. (And even for Crysis, I can play it using the 'lite' version of the 'Extreme Quality' mod at 1280x768, running at around 30fps most of the time)
It's personal opinion really. I find my current screen to be absolutely perfect for my needs, but that's just me.
About the whole 'FPS' thing though, the M17x will EAT through every game out there at 1920x1200, apart from a few very rare exceptions such as Crysis and GTA4, the likes of which you will still be running in High at 1920x1200. -
Hi,
if someone has a 1440 x 900 resolution screen compared to someone with a 1920 x 1200 resolution screen, will games in the next two years have better performance (FPS) with the 1440 x 900 resolution screen?
Can someone with a 1440 x 900 resolution screen post a video or images to show the desktop.
also if possible a video playing a game at 1440 x 900 resolution on the screen from a video camera -
in general i prefer the 1440x900 because the text is so damn small on the UXGA
the seond i saw my first UXGA i was thinking why would anyone want it...
eventually i got used to it and now i am comfortable with the res.
i would probably laugh at the thought of a 15" 1080P screen. -

Yeah! Things look damn tiny on my M17x @ 1200p lol
Luckily the Logitech mouse do very nice when you want to zoom in the text in webpage or document etc...
The 1200p is for gaming and movies purpose solely -
The trade-off is, everything is smaller. Sure, you can increase sizes, but software scaling is still pretty hit or miss, and simply turning the resolution down looks pretty lousy on most LCDs.
Of course, that extra image fidelity in movies on games is nice too, so I guess it's all a matter of opinion.Point is, if 1920x1200 is going to make stuff on screen uncomfortably small, go with 1440x900. Otherwise, 1920x1200 is a good upgrade, whether you primarily want it for productivity or multimedia.

Im not designer or stuff but Im multitasker
Comparing documents and multi windows opened is so convenient on higher res and with W7.
The zoom-in in webpage and document is just Ctrl + "+" or "-" and it does not make the text jaggy or pixelated etc... -
Yeah, firefox actually does a very good job with scaling. It's just system-wide scaling through the OS that's still pretty hit or miss since many programs weren't designed for it.
Back in the windows 7 beta I tried running in 120dpi mode through windows. A lot of stuff seemed to work ok, but Steam became completely unusable: all of the GUI elements were in the wrong place. I changed it back after that. I haven't tried it since then, so maybe it works better now. -
Hi,
I was hoping someone with a M17x with the 1440 x 900 screen could post an image or video from looking at the laptop and the screen instead of an internal screen shot.
Thanks. -

If you live in the US you will want to go to BestBuy and look at few 17" laptop (most of moderate ones will have 720p display) in person and get a better idea.
The external screenshot helps a lot IMHO. Why dont you find it helpful while it gives you exactly (if you happen to have a 16:10 laptop) or at least a ratio how text and windows and icons etc... look on a display @ 900p -
one true thing that has been said over and over in this thread is that 1920x1200 gives better performance over 1440x900 in games if your system runs in sli. some execptions apply too.
for lower resolutions your system is very dependent on CPU whereas for higher resolutions you can exploit the GPUs real power. enven on a single GPU.
I remember playing some games at almost better performance on my old gateway FX 7805u which had a 1920x1200 res on a single geforce 9800M GTS 1GB vs my current M17x which has 1440x900 on a 260M GTX in SLI.
the CPU is the same on both machines, a T9900 at 3.06GHz so definitely not a CPU matter here.
another true thing: once you experience the beauty of 1920x1200 you'll never get complete satisfaction out of a 1440x900 res.
thanks, -
Best to take SillyHoney's suggestion and go to a store for a look. That will give you a much better idea than any picture I could post. -

Back on topic though, IMO if someone is going to be getting an M17x with dual GPU's then get a proper 1200P screen to use them with. -
If you go for a 1920 x 1200 screen it will be ok for now but in a year or two the system will struggle to play the latest games at this resolution, the 1920 x 1200 screen wont last long maybe under a year, you will always gain fps from lowering the screen resolution.
this means you will need to downgrade the resolution to be able to have more fps to play smoothly. I have a clevo laptop with 2.66 core 2 duo and 7950 Nvidia GTX 512mb with a 1920 x 1200 display and I have to downgrade it to play the new games at all, most people cannot run crysis and gta 4 at 1920 x 1200 on a laptop
if i get a 1440 x 900 display this time it will run all the latest games with greater fps than the 1920 x 1200 and still be able to run newer games at its native resolution in a year or two with dual ati 4870s and a i7 260m.
also the desktop will look very small and is much harder on your eyes and if you lower it the screen seems distorted.
if you set a 1920 x 1200 screen to 1440 x 900 resolution it gets really distorted and people with this size screen have no choice because it will be impossible to play at native. -

Just fyi, there's some setting in windows that lets you keep a certain resolution while magnifying everything to like 125% (icons, text, whatever). You might check that out if you're worried about the resolution making things too small.
M17x 1440x900 is this a good resolution due to better FPS
