Hello, I recently bought an M17x 1080p screen @ 60hz and was looking forward to 3d gaming but now realise that it's only the 120hz screen that can handle it (thanks Dell, wish that had been made more clear from the start). Anyone know if this is true and there's no way a 60 hz can produce 3d? I heard that if you reduce the screen res to 720p then it can be done. But I get the feeling that was all bull and bravado...

You can have 3d using the iz3d driver and a pair of anaglyph glasses. For stereoscopic 3d, you'd need some kind of transmitter built in your laptop which you don't have because you bought the non-3d version.
However, as I said, using a pair of anaglyph glasses should work very well. (Apart from the colour loss of course.)

You can at least check out how well it works for your games with the anaglyph glasses without any extra driver. Just select 3D Vision DISCOVER from the drop down on the 'setup stereoscopic 3D page'. It was this that I tried out before buying the 120hz model.

FYI, if you really like it and go with an external monitor/tv that is 120hz or greater then you could find the original 3D Vision kit is good enough and cheaply available. All you get from 3D Vision 2 is slightly larger glasses, all the other features only work on monitors that support it. Quote on Nvidia site: 'Requires NVIDIA 3D LightBoost equipped monitor'.

I thought the Alienware/Dell ordering website made it pretty clear...

just to summarize what the others have said in several posts:

If you want to game in 3D, you need:

1 x 120hz screen (120hz screen will not work with AMD vid card)
1 x Nvidia vid card (if you have AMD, you cannot get 3D)
    1 x 3d glasses

    and just to add:

If you want 3d, i would go with a 580m/675m minimum if you want to game at 1920x1080. 3D requires the frame to be rendered twice so it effectively cuts your fps in half.
