How thick is the padding, and is there padding on all 6sides of the compartment? Is there padding on all 6sides of the backpack itself? And also, how far "up" (how high) is the laptop compartment suspended above the base of the backpack (i.e. buffer zone between a vertical drop and the floor)?

    Thx!

Just watched the youtube video there. Lots of stuff. It's freekin huge though. Please comment on the padding on all 6sides (especially the base/bottom of the backpack), as the video doesnt really address taht. Also, is the padded sleeve thing that can hold an xbox the same one as the laptop goes in? If not, can that padded sleeve thing be taken out, therefore reducing the backpack's size?

    Thanks!

Just an update on that Wenger messenger bag I posted earlier.

M17x R3 DOES fit in it but you can't just drop it in.. Need to pull the corners of the bag around it. I'm not sure if this is a bad thing because it isn't completely taught but it is tight enough that the system does not move and rests right up against padding at every angle.

Also it fits my System, its little sleeve, Charger, Logitech G700, few miniUSB cables, a LOAD of system backup / restore / game disks and my giant Steelseries QcK Heavy mousepad (Which doesn't seem like a huge feat until you realize its almost half an inch thick and 17x15") with more than enough room to spare for more.

thinking of ordering this one. in some review i saw they say the top is not square enough so it hit the corners of the laptop was the bad is close. so how does the r3 fit, can you post a pic with the r3 in the bag.

Awesome bags... don't fit an M17x and will not fit an M17x. I emailed the company and asked directly about a boot for the R3 and provided them the specs. I was told that none of their boots fit and they do not plan on making any that do.

    Sucks.

Those are some pics..I notice that I only can upload 6 pics per post? I will add more pics..also if you guys want, I can make a video too..
the first pic is obviously my r3 :D
    My comments on the padding?

top:there is no padding on the top of the backpack..
bottom: not so thick padding, about 1cm. if you are looking for a great base protection, then this bag wont satisfy you..For me, however, it's good enough..
sides: as you can see in the pictures, no padding on the side
back: there is about 2cm thickness padding..

The bag itself is not too big..It's just I'm too skinny :(

that's the pic of the back padding..and as you can see, there is no top padding..

as you can see in the picture, there is a great amount of depth between the laptop and the top of the bag, so you wont hit the corners of the laptop when you close the bag..

Has anyone tried the Swiss Gear Calderas bag? It says it fits a 17" laptop but we all know the M17x is not your average 17" laptop.

How much room is in the rest of the bag? Is there enough for headphones like the B&W P5's or Grado's SR60i and a text book or two?

Just watched a video of the Slappa Velocity Matrix, and got immediately interested. Anyone know how adequate/thick/hard is the padding for the base/bottom of the backpack?

I have the orion but Im getting a slappa soon. ANyone know a sleeve that fits the r3 well? like a neoprene zip up or something? Im tired of sliding on the soft cover which isnt really have any depth to keep dirt from scratching.

Do you know about the slappa's base/bottom padding? Please advise if you have the info :)

EDIT: Starting to hate alot of backpack reviews, cuz they only go so far as showing this kind of image: http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/33647.jpg. Seriously, if the backpack can peel even further, do it and show us the rest of the compartment, and its depth! Also, why doesn't anyone take a camera and point towards the inside of the backpack, with like a flashlight or something to show the depth and the base??

Also, if anyone has a photo they can share of the depth (any backpack), please do so :)

    Thanks for the update!

I saw the review by an owner and think this bag is way too big for me. Also having a chance to be forced to check a bag in is probably too high risk for me as well.

This kinda photo is what I was talking about. http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...eeves-discuss-here-img00881-20110313-1309.jpg. Peel it a bit further, bro. Also, take a picture of the entire depth of that compartment, if you can :) Turn on a flashlight or let the flash go down, if possible. I dont care how ghetto your picture turns out :p

Also, @ kevin, http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...eeves-discuss-here-img00888-20110313-1311.jpg >>How tall are you mang? I'm 5'4" and wanted to compare to see if this backpack will outmonster me :)

Edit: the bottle inside the bag is for a reference..bottle height is 19.5cm ~ 7.6 inch...two bottle roughly equal to the r3 length

Crap, I'm prolly as tall as your clavicle or something, then. This won't work haha. Picture those little kids on tv, whose moms buy them those gigantic school backpacks, walking down the street and then getting picked on by bullies. Don't want to look goofy like that ;)

Right now, I have the basic Jansport daypack, which is the right size for my torso. It barely fit my 14" HP though, with the Tucano Workout bag. Wonder what the smallest backpack is, which can fit the R3.

Slappa has a location close to me ill definitely report when i get it. I need slightly more room than the orion but ill be keepin the orion when i need to just lug aorund the machine and all my accessories. It does fit everything I need now but its a little stuffed. Its surprising how much the orion can fit really.

The pix in this post, and the pic here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...eeves-discuss-here-img00892-20110313-1314.jpg, are great.

Thanks, this was really helpful. But yah, seems that the Beacon is too big for me. I really like the Velocity Matrix and Velocity Spyder 15" versions though. Too bad they're so expensive, and noone's commented on the base padding/depth yet.

Can you comment on the beacon's compartment and how far up it's "suspended" above the bottom/base of the bag? Is there any buffer zone for drops, etc? Know what I mean?

The Orion. Can you comment on the base padding/space/buffer zone/etc? Please refer to the request I submitted to kevin. Also, thanks for the looking into the Slappa for us (me) :)

I personally like the beacon's compartment..the only think that bother me is that it's kind of hard to pull the laptop out from the bag..maybe because the friction produced by the orange fur..

its only about 1cm suspended above the base..but you can put something like these (look at the pictures) on the base as an added buffer zone / shock absorbent..

Is that foam dense/hard/durable? Will it compress easily/wear out quickly? Also, where does one find "high-density" foam/rubber? Does the hobby shop really sell these things, as most people claim?

Thx for taking the time to help a brotha out, mang.

I believe it wont wear out quickly/easily..it's very durable, and it's not really easy to compress it..as you can see on the pictures, I did put a good amount of force to compress it, and that's how far it compressed..This foam is a very good shock absorbent..

I'm not sure where I can get one of these..I got the foam shown in the pictures inside the outer pocket of the bag (i guess every beacon comes with one)..

Dang, sounds good. I wish I had kept that Brenthaven bag I donated to the thrift store, now (as selfish as that sounds :)).

I wonder if a hobby store, or even HomeDepot or Michaels would sell it. Hmmmm... (someone please chime in)!

If you see it closely, it has four layers..maybe it's just four foams glued on top of each other..Or you can be creative, go to michaels and see the best foam that they have, and you can glue two or more foam together..lol

That's a good idea. Prolly can wrap it (sew it) in some fabric too, so that it doesn't get all yucky and stuff from watever particles may get in there, kinda like a pillow inside. Kinda disappointed that laptop manufacturers don't have these already... I've seen a number of slings, sleeves, and messengers at stores, and none have this kinda padding either. What's the point of advertising "shock resistance" if you only put padding (and it's never thick/dense/durable anyway) on the sides ( for the lid and base of the laptop itself)? The laptop bag will never drop that way for you to worry about full-forced drop, cuz it'll splat and disperse the force anyway.

I bought the timbuk2 backpack and its really sweet! I had a swiss gear before for my 15 inch inspirion and this bag is so much better because it really fits to your body well. They weight is distributed so nicely that I don't mind carrying my laptop, books and stuff around all day. I haven't tried yet but I'm sure I can fit my xbox 360 in the main compartment as well. The padding works well. there is about an inch worth at the base. The r3 does fit tight in their though you will need to put the bag down to pull it out. The outer outer padding is as thick as the padding for the swiss gear. You will feel the over all rectangle of the laptop but its not bothersome. The pockets are pretty deep. The left side compartment easily fits the charger. All the pockets are deeper than they appear. The best thing about this bag is the compression and expansion capability. It gets as thin as a textbook and expands without looking dorky. Its also light and very durable. Overall best backpack I've owned. Got mine for $85 from the pricepros. It was black, black, gray outer lining with the red swirl. Amazon.com: Used and New: Timbuk2 H.A.L. Laptop Backpack,Black/Black/Black,M

So I was at Michael's today. Saw these, but didn't buy them. I'm thinking of just shopping for a nice backpack that'll fit the computer, and just put these foam pads in there. Best way to do it is to glue together 5 layers of this foam. At the store, I stacked together 5 and it was about 1.5-2" thick, and pretty durable. It also "springs back" to its original condition after it gets compressed, which is really neat. 99cents a piece too. I think that I can buy 20 sheets and I'll be covered for all 6 sides of the computer. 2 stacks of 5 for the top and bottom of the lappy. I can make 2 stacks of 5, and cut those in half, so it'd be 4.5" x 12 x 1.5-2" strips, which would be adequate for lining the 4 corners of the laptop compartment/backpack.

If anyone's looking to "complete" their inadequately padded backpack, I think that a stack of 5 of these will do it.

    inap,

Thanks so much for posting this note. I was actually thinking of settling on the Pegasus since a youtube video from newegg talked about additional padding in the laptop compartment both on the bottom and sides of the laptop area. Is it at all possible to surround the R3 with a neoprene sleeve before going in the laptop slot in the Pegasus laptop?

Here's the video, look at minute 4-5 and he talks about it.
YouTube - Newegg Product Tour: Wenger SwissGear Pegasus Backpack

Wenger calls it "Swiss Gear Laptop Protection"

Also, if you don't mind checking, is it possible to stick another bag in the middle large compartment? I want to fit the Case Logic SLRC-205 which is
14.75" x 8.25" x 4.5" (mostly 5 inches thick with an SLR in it) in the middle compartment.

If the sleeve and SLR all don't fit, I will be back to the drawing board again. :(

I like your idea with the foam dookie. The more and more I look at this, it seems more flexible (and possibly easier) to just get an awesome sleeve and go with any super tall backpack.

The Spire boot didn't seem that well padded to me from what I've seen so far on google and youtube searches.

Can you post a video please, and show the interior (laptop compartment's padding), and also zoom in to the bottom/base right beneath the laptop slot? See previous posts of mine for what I'm talking about just in case you're confused.

A video? I don't even have still pictures of it :) Dude, it would be easier if I just brought it over to your place to check it out. ;)

I know what you're asking, though. So here:

    Q. How is the laptop slot attached to the bag? How high is it from the bottom of the bag?

    A. It's sewn onto the back of the bag. The slot is very close to the bottom of the bag, but there's 1/4" of foam padding at the bottom of the slot, in addition to the bottom of the bag padding.

    Q. How much padding is there in the bottom of the bag?

    A. Feels like the same 1/4" padding as found around the laptop slot. In addition, there are the semi-hard rubber strips at the bottom, which will also cushion.

    Q. How tall am I?

    A. That's getting too personal! Seriously, though, this bag is HUGE. I'm going to the PU's this weekend, and I'll be able to pack a weekends worth of clothes in this along with the laptop. See Urban Hipster of Average Stature (UHAS) below:

the r3 barely fits with just the oem sleeve, the corners are touching the zipper when closed, so i don't think it would fit wuth a thicker sleeve. thats why i'm getting the everki beacon next. the pegasus is nice and built to last, but doesn't fit the r3 that well. the center compartment is prolly 3" think.

Thanks so much. You saved me probably an hour trying to drive someplace to look at this in person. I thought about the Everki too and that compartment looks a little bit bigger...

Thanks for all the photos and video links everyone has posted so far. I am still trying to find the right bag for my setup.

I have an M17xR3 as well as a Dell Latitude D820 (15.6") laptop that's my company PC. I carry both with me all the time. I currently have a Slappa Velocity Matrix backpack that I bought for this setup. Unfortunately, I'm not happy with the roominess of the backpack. With both laptops in there—M17x in the protective compartment, as well as in the sleeve that came with the laptop, and the Dell in that main compartment area as well—there's little room in the second or third compartments for my peripherals.

Ideally, I'd like to carry both laptops, mouse, various adapters and accessories, etc. in a backpack or bag roomy enough for me not to fear them being crushed by the backpack itself. If it fit my NZXT cooler as well, that would be heaven, but I'm doubting the possibility.

I'm 6' 3" and can easily carry a large backpack, so size isn't really an object.

Right now the Slappa M.A.S.K. seems like the way to go, but I don't need all the fancy artwork. I need protection and practicality. I'm not making a fashion statement. The Everki was quite tempting as well, but I too am worried about the lack of protection for the backpack. I didn't see that anyone answered the question of whether or not the game console insert would fit an M17x, so I could put the Dell in the designated laptop compartment.

Any info or suggestions of other ones to look at would be much appreciated. I don't need a backpack. If there's a notebook bag that would serve my purpose better, I'd be happy with that too.

yep the laptop compartment is huge..if you really want to add extra protection, you can always buy a laptop sleeve for the m17x and then put it into the laptop compartment. It'll fit..

Roy, why not get the M.A.S.K. with the High Five face? It's pretty business-like.

Oh, it's not the exterior that's the problem, it's the inserts. Most of them are downright scary and look about right for motorcycle-riding, goth hipsters. The Slappa Blue Strike seems to be the least annoying.

Would that they release a plain-jane backpack with all the physical features and none of the eye/taste-strain. *sigh*

But, that can be hidden, so my main concerns are the practical ones: size of compartments, protection, durability, etc.

I ordered the blue strike insert too, but just ended up taking it out. When you do, you'll see behind it is the normal interior with a couple of velcro strips.

Ah, good. Then I don't have to worry about that if I decide to go with the M.A.S.K.

    Thanks.
