You're right about my love of Brenthaven bags. Mine fits, but very snugly and I wouldn't be able to fit a 1inch binder in there. And I'm unable to slip the computer into the lappy compartment. I can only slide it into the space in front of it, and can barely zip the bag closed. And when it fully zips up, it's really tight and you can totally tell that there's a computer in there due to the rectangular shape it has.
Does the zipper have 2 pull-thingies? Or just 1? (Not sure what they're called, but ya the thing you pull on to close it lolz). Is your bag the 15inch or 17inch version? Can you also share photos of the bottom of the bag, and comment on how much padding there is on the base, INSIDE of the bag? Dont need any more commentary regarding those rubber thingies on the outside.
Thx!

Never was a big fan of the side pocket myself. -
I'm not understanding this, or why you think it's such a huge point to protect your laptop against burglars like they're all around you (unless you live in that bad of a town...). If it's in a bag, it's in a bag, I really doubt people are going to call you out if your backpack is shaped like a square. Are you planning on walking around in dark places at all hours of the night with your laptop or something? In public places where there are a lot of people around, I can't imagine someone actually coming up to you and jacking you unless you're just in a crappy neighborhood. -
back on topic: I got the Astro Scout and will post video review/pics with the Alienware m17x r3 in and out of it. -
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
Orion is still the way to go. Liking it more and more every day. Love the fact that it opens 180 degrees. Great for loading the lappy.

Also just got back from Target. They had no more black Tuari 17" sleeves, but the ones they did have were magenta and blue. It's the same old same old (inadequate padding), so I didn't buy it. Will be shopping for a backpack afterall, dammitDoesn't help that backpacks are really expensive.
-
It's the 17 inch version, no 15 inch bag will ever fit an m17x from my understanding. And that photo was actually from the inside of the bag, it was just fully unzipped, and a really bad picture. I'll try and take a better one that actually shows you the padding when I get off work, which will be about midnight or so, or 3 and a half hours from now depending on where you are. -
-
^I noticed a few threads up that people were scared of getting their stuff stolen. For that, I would advise the mobile edge securepack, which I have and can personally vouch for as a fantastic bag. It is almost impossible to open it without taking off the bag and reversing the straps.
-
To OP:
It will be a while until I can post pics/review because I have the bag, but my laptop will be here earliest in 2 weeks -
This kind of works... The padding goes right up to the bottom of the zipper, and there's a little extra padding for the laptop compartment. it's rigid too, so that it would absorb the shock really well. I honestly would have no problem with dropping this bag with my laptop in it. -
Thx!!!! -

Gotta continue shopping, I guess. For now I'll just stick with my Brenthaven, even though it's a tight fit. Don't really need the space just yet anyway, as grad school doesn't start till Fall.
Can someone share a similar photo as Sean's but for the Orion backpack? TYIA! -
-
That is, if I don't find a good quality bag before that trip happens
-
I'm waiting for noodles pictures of the scout, myself. That backpack is pretty steezy. I haven't looked at the Orion that much, now that I think about it.
-
-
I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Orion backpack or messenger bag, not sure which yet. It will be used for medical school so I have to do some research to figure out which one is more practical. I will post plenty of pics and give a review when I get it(which won't be for a little bit bc the EDD on my lappy isn't until the end of April).

I just looked at the Orion...It looks pretty hideous in comparison to the Scout. Just my opinion though.
-
-
Yeah, I gotta have that steeeeeze.
-
I actually liked the look of the Orion, but I think the Astro Scout is more suited for me because they have the headset contraption in the front
-
Thanks!
EDIT: Anyone know if the Level8 Atlas backpack fits the R3? http://themacfeed.com/2010/07/review-level-8-atlas/ How about the Targus A7? http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Commuter-Backpack-Designed-TSB200US/dp/B0043TKASQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_4
EDIT2: Man, another nice backpack I just discovered: BBP Industries. I wonder if it'll fit the R3: http://themacfeed.com/2010/04/review-bbp-bags-industries-backpack/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxnF9Fufw4U -
YouTube - SLAPPA M.A.S.K. Custom Build 17" Laptop Backpack
Was just looking at this vid for the M.A.S.K Backpack will check it out more. -
I did some research on the SLAPPA M.A.S.K. bags and They seem perfect except for the fact that a few reviews state that it is a little lacking in proper cushion on the underside of the bag which is supposed to protect everything inside when you sit it down. However the reviews on the bag are still very, very high. -
I still wont have my machine for another month, 5/5
but I bought a Slappa Matrix Pro 17'' for $50 off of ebay. I figure I won't be throwing myself at anything or dropping it off of ladders, so ~1'' of padding is enough for me.

Hi everyone!
First of all, sorry for my poor english.
I´ve reading (and learning) a lot from this forum since i deciced to acquire a m17xr3. A couple days ago arrived to my home the Astro scout backpack i had purchased last week, so i decided to contribute with this, hope it helps.
Although my laptop still didn´t arrived i figured out some photos could interesting you, at least for sizing matters. I have an edd of 4/15 ( yet nervous), so i hope next week i can expand this with more info.
Here are the pics, to get an idea im average height (1.77m), relatively slim (65 kg) and Virgo.
Pd. Yes, it´s an aliendog. No, not reponds as Scrappy doo
Ask wathever you want guys. -
Also, I lol'ed at "Virgo" hahahahaha. -
The Astro Scout is Very comfortable!
I compared it with my friends Slappa MASK and I definately prefer my Scout. I think the Scout is more comfortable and doesn't have to much of the silly design making it a little more professional looking.
Just my 2 cents though -
-
The constant asking isn't helping either. It's actually getting quite annoying -

Just remembered that this guy posted some pix of the Astro Scout in the G73 backpacks thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6337994-post133.html
But, it doesn't look like it has very thick padding... Can someone confirm/refute?
Thx! -
Ordered my Slappa M.A.S.K backpack over the weekend, but still waiting on my R3.
I'll try to snap some pictures if people want but my droid isn't taking very good pictures lately hehe.

Hi again!
The official dimensions as listed in the website are 14" long x 7" wide x 19" tall. Later at home i will check it (In cm´s).
The padding is enough thick for me, besides the laptop cage (very furry), it has additional padding at the back and bottom. In addition the front has a semi-rigid framework, so the weakest point (as usual i suppose) are the sides. Despite of this i think it would resist a little fall without problems, (but its not suited for kung fu figthing.)
As noodles256, ill do a complete photoreview of this when i get the laptop, but if you have another specific question just tell me. (unfortunately my edd has change to 5/9PAIN
)
Meanwhile here are some reviews i founded:

Dookie I think your best option is to purchase a backpack that you like aesthetically/organizationally, and just add your own foam padding within it. The amount of padding you're demanding won't be met by any backpack.

I picked up a Swiss Gear Ibex 17" backpack for my R3.
It fits well. Tight but the zippers go up and around without needing to pull them over nor does the zipper rest against the R3.
I actually use it to carry my R3 and my work laptop, a Lenovo T-61 plus all accessories.
I have had good luck with Swiss Gear backpacks so I am sticking with them. -
-
Got my Slappa M.A.S.K Koa today and it's exactly as I expected. The build quality appears to be excellent. The bag looks incredibly strong and I'm sure I'll be very happy with it when I get my R3.
-
Bought and received the Alienware Orion backpack. Pretty happy with it. Plenty of room for all my stuff, plus it was "free" as dell sent me a $100 coupon for canceling my replacement order twice.

Have had ideas lately of making my own sleeve out of ballistic nylon plus foam I got from a case at work that used to hold the projectors and the foam I can buy at Michaels'. It's really dense foam stuff too---came stock with the dell projectors in their suitcase/hardcase thingies. I just ripped out the foam and tossed the cases. Will cut 'em out and glue 'em to some cheapy nylon/cotton fabric then sew the ballistic nylon on teh outside of that.
Can't wait till I find a nice backpack to put this in shortly after -
