No this would be for superior overclockability - so that we can Bench better and further establish the M17x superiority over all other notebooks in the world :)

A little off topic, but how much better are 4870sx2 over 260s SLI? Asking because dell just gave me them as a replacement.

about a 15-20% improvement I figure (rough guess - game dependent) ... if you paid for 260 and got the 4870s for free, then I would consider that a small victory

Can one of you guys run it with GPUZ monitoring the clock rates (i.e. they're still downclocking correctly out of games etc...)?

I am curious are the 4870's considered ruffly equal to the 280's?

Reason I asking this, and I am very sceptical, as claxdog's GPU's are at MAX and I hope they just didn't add an auto check for DPC Latency Checker and GPUZ to set the clocks at max. 'Heh guys, look, no spikes'.

Yes I'm half kidding... but that means I'm half not :)

OK. I proposed opening the beta up to about 10 or so NBR members. The reply was that my point of contact had an alternative and wanted to run it by me in the morning. I have a meeting with the Studio XPS engineers at 0800, CST, then I'll jump on the phone and find out the details on the alternative. You know I'll be posting back as soon as I can about mid morning or so.

I'm pretty sure the future driver release will have this fix in them, and I'm pretty sure Powermizer will be functioning as designed, but I'll definitely run that down for you guys.

Could you check in gpu-z if the cards are downclocking (powermizer on) and temperatures?

and is the 9400m usable with these drivers?

and what about fps in borferlands ? better or worse than with your previous drivers?

    cheers

we are still waiting to see what the deal with this new nvidia driver.

yes you can install the driver for the 9400m only and then reboot with crossfire on. drivers are usuable according to the hardware detected each time.

but lets see what will happen with the nvidias first.

very promising for the first time. however stuttering in games needs time to test. stuttering is not always related to dpc latency.. high red spikes cause stutterings but not the opposite. i can say that from the ATIs.

if everything is ok i may ask my GTX280s back.

    claxdog,

Thanks for the pictures. But we are more interested to see the clocks of the video cards, this is were the problem was. When they change, they tend to cause massive spikes. So are they changing when you browse and listen to music? What are the clock speeds when setting idle?

The change of the clocks gives no spikes at all. Powermizer still works. clocks down clock properly. tried every game I own(borderlands, crysis, crysis warhead,dragonage,farcry2,) have had no problems so far time will tell. As you can see from this screen shot right after a clock change I see no spikes from it. I dont have wow as of now. I will dl a trail later today and test it also borderlands fps no lower than 33 as high as 63 in scag valley.pic clock change and correlating dpc effect.

and you are right 4870s perform better. depends on the game.

Dell told me that once I went to ATI's there would be no going back to the 280ms..
Now I know there is always a way to get stuff accomplished.. Just stating what multiple people told me there.

I already sent my cards back.. Probably should have held on to them for a bit longer...

well was it the same Dell that was refusing swap to ATIs? I have not decided to go back to the GTX280s. i have to think about it. Until then i wont demand back the gpus i purchased.

The difficult part was swapping to ATIs, Not asking for the gpus you legally purchased.

Not one game I have tested is faster with the 4870s. That's with Clean installs of the Dell driver, 9.12 and 10.3. I am seeing a 20-30% difference.

No red spikes, but I really hate these cards so far. Way more trouble to setup than the 280m cards.

I am going to backup respawn and test the cards based on a factory fresh config tonight.

I got this in my mail recently and they want me to do this:

"1. Press the Windows Key and R to open the run menu. Type Regedit.
    2. If it asks you to permit it to allow the programme to make changes, accept.
    3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Control\Video
    4. In here there should be lots of entries, with system generated names.
    5. Look through the entries, and sort out which ones have a 0000 and 0001 sub entry.
    6. Once you've found all of these, open up the 0000 sub-entry and see what's inside them (we won't need to touch the 0001 entries). Most of them will look like/similar to this:
    http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q126/alexrose1uk/?action=view&current=regeditwrongentry.jpg
    7. One of the entries should look different, and have a lot more entries:
    http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q126/alexrose1uk/?action=view&current=regedit.jpg
    8. Now we've found this entry, scroll to the bottom, and in the key window, right click, select new and make a new DWORD. (the 32bit one)
    9. Name it PerfLevelSrc (note the capitals are important in all these new Dwords so make sure to include them!)
    9. Double click the new entry and write 2222 as the value and click OK.
    http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q126/alexrose1uk/newdword.jpg
    10. Now make an entry called PowerMizerEnable, open it and set the value to 0.
    11. Make another entry called PowerMizerLevel, open it and set it to the value 1.
    12. Make the final new entry called PowerMizerLevelAC, open it and also set it to 1.
    13. Close regedit, and then reopen it. Your new entries should now look like the below (and should have been carbon copied into the 0001 entry):
    "

Is this the procedure that disables powermizer and make the cards run on full throttle 24-7?
