One of the fan of my friends M17x R2 (5870 XF) makes a noise (a grrrrr kinda sound) only when the system is booted up. The system temperatures remain quite stable (45-55 when idle and 80-90 during game depending upon the game). Is that normal or a call to tech support is in order ?

i called and they sent some one out asap with a new fan, be warned that who ever they send out will not be gently with your machine, i stood there watching them rip mine apart like nothing flipping it back and forth and tossing screws left and right...he put it all back together but it was brutal just watching him handle my baby like that

You just have to explain to the onsite tech that the laptop is extremely important to you and that if there is one scratch on it, you will call Dell for a replacement part...they generally slow down a bit after that. ;)

Or...you just do what I do...convince the tech rep to just send you the part. :)

Telling them to be careful will not work in most cases (depends on the tech). I have not needed any service on my m17x as it is only a few weeks old, but on my m15x which is now dead I have had service twice.

The 2nd time I told the guy to be careful, but he could not care less. He was tossing and turning it, at the same time sliding his whole hand over the lid while turning it. To make matters worse he had a ring on his finger!!!

Edit: you can avoid paint damage on the lid by pasting a temporary plastic sheet on it, and remove it when the tech leaves.
