Hi im interested in a M17x with either a standard 560m or uprgade to a 580m. I would just like to how this card would compare to a desktop GTX 580, would it be a massive difference for gaming?
-
Its performance is wayyyyyy different to that of a desktop GTX 580... The laptop GTX 580M is somewhere around a slower desktop GTX 560TI if not mistaken..
-
No, a hardcore overclocked 580m can reach stock desktop GTX 560 clocks (if you're lucky), the 580m actually uses the same GPU as the GTX 560, but severely downclocked.
-
i googled this and this came up, i just want to know how big of a difference is there between the desktop 580's and the laptop 580's.
-
580m is like close to a desktop gtx 460 ish or so ?
difference vs a desktop card is a fair bit
mobile 580 has like 2 thirds of the desktop 580's cuda cores and runs a wee bit slower.

The GTX 560Ti is the desktop equivalent of the 580M. The first one being 37% clocked higher than the 580M.

I found this topic, had a same question in mind XD
In the future, do you think they can make a mobile cards that can par on performance with a same model on desktop? -
No way. Heat and power consumption alone with melt and destroy the laptop and the power brick. They label it 580m whereas the performance is only 560 Ti standard because "580" is associated with the highest performing GPUs at the time of release. The 580m is the most power nvidia can pack in a laptop with current tech so they label it 580m but because it is a laptop, you compromise performance for portability. It is only a name anyways.

Ummm...I guess that's the limit of a gaming laptop always behind from a desktop in terms of fps? But still with high-end mobile GPU we'll get good fps. I'm looking forward about mobile gaming, a bit curious. Thanks!

to the OP...if you are serious about mobile gaming, the 560m will not be enough. you will have to make many configuration sacrifices like lower resolutions and IQ in the modern games (e.g., The witcher 2, Rage, upcoming Skyrim, Crysis 2 DX 11 etc ) -
laptop components are designed to run in a smaller space also to run with less power ie a battery.
Basicly more power = more heat
there are laptops that run with actual desktop cpu ( custom laptops ) however the battery that comes in it is more of an extra and basicly useless, these laptops are fairly heavy aswell so their more of a portable pc then a laptop. Even they still run mobile gfx.
With chips gettin smaller and smaller the power usage on them slowly goes down wich also means that the heat they generate will go down.
Maybe in the future desktop and mobile gpu will perform close to the same but currently not a chance.
Why gfx manufactures name the mobile cards like the way they do ? Prolly because they think their clever. But its mostly along the lines of the naming of the desktop cards in terms of how far up the chain they stand. 580gtx is the top of the line desktop card from nvidia where the 580m the top of the mobile line is and visa versa for ati although the 6990 desktop version actualy has 2 gpu where the mobile one has just one gpu.
Mobile cards still can bring quite decent performance sure its not the same as the desktop cards but heh being able to bring your ownin machine wherever you want has some drawbacks.
Gaming laptops are gettin there tho in terms of performance and in most cases u can upgrade the gfx card in the future so their not as they where in the past where if the gfx cant handle stuff anymore its time to bin it and get a new laptop. I think the m17x r1 is a good proof of that i believe one of the lads on the forums here got dual 6970 in them or along those lines.
Apperently the 7xxx line comming from ati soon is suposed to absolutely own current mobile cards but it will be a while when mobile cards come close to their desktop brothers.

DarkXeroX, for desktops on nVIDIA side, the GTX 590 is the top of the line dual GPU card.

So if a 580m is similar to a 560 and you have sli 580 m and Overclockers them, am I right in thinking they would best a 580 gtx desktop? I had sli 560gtx when i had my desktop and they were 30% faster than a 580gtx

notebookcheck shows the SLI 580m's as slightly faster than a desktop gtx 560ti -
Just looked on note book check, sli 580m are actually 10% slower than a 580gtx so not bad at all bit of over clock and they're faster, they have 768 cores -
