First, I want to apologize if this is posted elsewhere, the search doesn't appear to be working.

Can someone clear up HDMI-In for me? Is it direct to the display or does it go through the GFX card or some sort of capture device?

TL;DR HDMI signal goes straight to the screen, cannot be used for capturing media.

It works like a TV, you can connect your PS3/Xbox360 on your laptop in that particular slot.
And let the monitor function as a HDTV, I don't know any other laptops that have it to be honest.

Pretty much all are HDMI out only, which sends data/signals FROM the laptop to an external source.
While HDMI in receives data from an external source.

    Right, that all makes sense.

But does it just simply switch the display over to use HDMI or does it go through some sort of capture device that I can tap into via the OS?

That I can't say, I don't have the laptop yet.
But I believe you'll have to switch it in display settings through the desktop.
Perhaps someone that has used it to hook up their console can shed more light on this.

It won't hurt anything if I connect my console to it a lot will it? Like on a daily basis for gaming.

    Sorry for the dumb question:]

For the price we pay one should expect it to work flawlessly :)
In other words it was build with that in mind, so you're good to go.

Just want to add some info..... If you're miss your Sound from your console/device during using HDMI IN, remember to switch your Sound Setting from the control panel. Or just go to Volume Control Option at the bottom right of your desktop, Right Click, Go to volume Control Option and set the HDMI Input as default.....

Remember, you need to switch it back again to it's default control option after you plug out your HDMI cable. Otherwise, there's no sound come out from your laptop speaker.

    Works in my PS3......
