Hello,
I'm in the process of ordering my M17X but I've run into a problem. I'm very interested in this being a rig able to run 3D, its one of its main selling features for me. (even if the 3d ends up being bad, it will still be a great laptop) Anyways when it comes time to select the GFX card i choose the "2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M " Which as far as i can tell is capable of everything required for 3D display and the monitor i choose is "17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 120Hz WLED w/3D Bundle " But then, i get a pop up saying i have a compatibility issue. The thing is, None of the GFX cards provided seemingly work with the Display.
Maybe I'm just missing something here, but could someone explain why this is happening? God knows their tech support has no clue.
Thank you for your time and any help you can give me.

Hello, that's because AMD can't do 3D on the internal screen.
If you want to buy this laptop with the 120Hz screen you have to choose an nVIDIA card.
Welcome to NBR! -
You need to choose an nvidia GFX card. For some reason they are only compatible with the gtx 560m or the 580m (which is currently on delay/pulled from stock).
-
Dell is sold out of Nvidia 580m graphics card, which is the GPU you need/want for 3D. They have been back ordered for around a month, and I guess today they removed the 580m, probably until they get the current orders filled and actually have some stock.
Sadly, you will probably just need to wait a while, or you could try calling into the sales line (which is normally pretty good) and see if they can add a 580m even though you don't have the option. -

Like katalin said, you are limited to nvidia cards. To add to that, though, it is considered an nvidia 3D vision bundle. If you purchase it, it will come with a pair of 3D vision glasses and the receiver built into the laptop.
Personally, I recommend it. I really enjoy the 3D vision. Though, I would also recommend waiting on the 580m to come back as a purchase option (currently, there is a shortage of cards.)
Edit: Wow, I start typing up a response on my phone and 3 more responses pop up. You guys are fast.

You're welcome.
I wish you good luck despite the status of the 580M cards. -
Well come on back when you get it! I have had my 3D rig for three weeks and you couldn't pry it out of my cold dead fingers. I am loving this thing! The 3D is really cool.

You're welcome, good luck on your order! In my opinion, it is very much worth the wait
Has it been that long? Sheesh, time flies.
Run into any throttles? I remember you were a bit worried about that. -
I haven't had any throttling at all. I flashed the vBIOS and repasted with good thermal compound. The 580m runs very cool compared to the 5870m I've been using for two years. It's an all around great laptop.

So im ordering today, They have the Nvidia 560.. i realise its not a 580 but is it really like Huge difference?

the 580m is about 50-60% more powerful...so ya, big difference
Piggly, I wouldn't get 3d without the 580m...because as it is, running in 3d will chop your frame rates in half. The computer has to render the frame twice in 3d which effectively drops your framerates in half
So if you're going to the 560m, a 50% drop in fps in a 560m will lead to unplayable framerates at the native 1080p. You'll have to drop your graphical details and resolution to play which is a bummer -

As Slick stated, yes. I originally had a 560m, and the difference is huge. You will certainty want it if you plan on gaming in 3D.
I would suggest trying to call a few different sales reps and see if you can find one who will give you the option. (Always call, by the way, you can get discounts and deals if you're good.
) Otherwise, I suspect they are off of the shelves until Dell gets more in, and fulfills the orders already in place.

ive already ordered and confirmed all this ...If i call into the sales dept tomorrow AM and see if they can fix it over the phone. What are my odds of getting my order switched up, just from past experiences with sales

To be honest, I'm not sure. If you can't get it switched, and you want the 580m, you could try to cancel and re-order. First, I would try talking to your rep and see what options he/she gives you. There is always the option of getting the 580m down the road, but it is quite expensive. (Right now, I would expect between $800 and $1000 USD) -
So i called in today..And was promptly Told that i had a ticket already open (which im pretty sure i dont) and that her College would assist me on monday...Does that make sense to anyone? God forbid someone takes a week vacation with this kind of set up... Im just gonna call back and hope for someone else.
Okay Wow, Im utterly infuriated right now with Dells Customer call center. The woman on the phone started getting pissy at me when i asked for the 580 She started telling me i need to change it to the Ati radeon card and when i explained to her that it wouldnt work with the 3d display i ordered She got pissed at me and like Yelled, You cannot order the 580, No one can help this, Stop calling. I called twice and was VERY calm the entire time up til that point. IS there anyone who thinks That maybe an american company should have atleast one or two people who speak clear english?
