I'm about to bring my laptop on a two week European Vacation and I'm just now, two days away from our departure, thinking about how to prevent the thing from being stolen. I'd REALLY like to avoid lugging the huge thing around everywhere I go, but I'm not sure I trust the kensington lock to secure it while it's back at the hotel room. Is there any kind of software that arms it to sound an alarm when it's moved or something? I know there are accelerometers in some computers, but I'm not sure about this one. Any ideas?

If you don't want to carry it around, and you don't want to trust the Kensington lock, then I would just shut it down and hide it in the room somewhere. In the hotel room I was at in Vegas there were plenty of places I could have hidden my M17x. No one knew it was in my room, and I put the 'Do Not Disturb' thing on the door handle.

I usually leave my laptop out in the open, on a table or where ever I set it up. And as Talon suggested, I put the do not disturb sign on and I'm off. The people who work there will most likely not steal anything as noticeable as a laptop. But I guess it's always better to be safe than sorry.

There is no need to worry at all. Nobody will steal your laptop when you are not in your hotel room.
1, An outsider will not be able to acess the room.
2, A worker will not steal your laptop. If they do, they will lose their job.
Do not leave it on the table though, they may do a small scratch on a non obvious part of the computer out of jealousy

Under the mattress? If you had to hide it. That plus the DO not disturb, should keep the honest people honest, and discourage petty thieves. There is no way to stop a true thief, just hope you have nothing he wants.

Now if I can just convince my mother to allow me to take it instead of forcing me to bring her crappy HP Laptop from 2 years ago with an i3 and integrated graphics *shudders*

If you can afford an m17x, I would assume you would be staying at a decent hotel in the first place ;) The last hotel I stayed at had a big enough safe to fit an m17x into, but I only put passports and wife's diamond ring in there. When I went out I left my m17x on the table in full view, and every time I came back, there were chocolates on it :D

Yes there is software! I just installed LoJack for Laptops two days ago, and I am leaving for Germany in two days. We are in the same boat! In the bios there is a setting for Computrace in one of the right-most menus. In the menu select activate, and then install Computrace LoJack software. In the event that it gets stolen, every time it connects to the internet even if it is wiped LoJack can trace it, because the logging is done in the bios. Where are you going in Europe?

Starting in London, then going to Paris, Rome, Venice, Zurich, Brussels, and back to London in that order over the course of 2 weeks.

Do you have a lighter, cheaper laptop you can take with you. It's not like you will get much time to play games is it? :)

Just a suggestion. I often take my little Sony Vaio X on business trips. You don't need much more than a netbook to keep abreast of things while travelling.
