    Hey everyone,
I have an M17x R1 and it's really making me upset that there will be no way I could possibly upgrade to a I processor. I currently have a P8600 and it' quite annoying. 2.4 ghz isn't cutting it anymore for the things I am doing. I also have the complete care warranty due to my motherboard frying within the first month of having this computer. They gave me three years complete care for free. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone had got their hands on a new R2 because of a issue with their R1. It might be a scam yeah, but Alienware and Dell pull enough scams on us. Any information would be great. Here's what I have in my computer watered down.

    Processor - Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 ghz
    GPU - Nvidia GTX 260M
    Memory - 4gb DDR3
    Hard Drive - 250gb 7200 rpm

Anything will help and I will greatly appreciate it.

    -Brian

Why not just sell it and order a new R2? Your post will be deleted by a mod since a post like this is considered a fraud on NBR.

If I sell it I wouldn't get anywhere close to the same amount of money for the computer. Not even anywhere close to what I paid for it.

That's because you've used it for YEARS. Technology degrades over time. Are you asking is to get same or greater value after years of using it? Something's wrong with that. What's with all these questions about free upgrades? What's the world coming to? Makes no sense to me.

    Good one :D +rep

Nice Tip btw. (Of course not for free!) +rep :)

    @ColemanBrians
I'm also wondering something... Why did you buy this laptop anyway in the first place if you didn't know either if the system would be upgradeable or the performance is not what you expected? Anyway i think there would have been a good solution beforehand about this matter to avoid something like this, researching...

Also i don't know how much you have paid for it that you think it does not deserve it's price tag whatever you paid, dunno. But i'm sure you can't expect too much for making the wrong buy than just to resell it if you're not happy with it.

It's actually less than a year old. And yeah if a piece of my computer breaks and my warranty tells me that I can get the newest product then that's what I expect. I'm not asking for your personal opinion or anything...just wanted an answer to my question.

I'm sorry, but i must have totally missed that line in my warranty bill aswell. Can you point me out to that specific line in the documents, sounds pretty awesome lol

Edit: Just for another over the thumb calculation... Dell CAN "only" give you equally or better "replacement" for the price you paid for... i don't think dell's warranty is like a subscription where you always get the latest product if you're not happy with the product anymore...

Read this page 2 under 2a. last paragraph.

If we decide that it is necessary to replace the Computer Device rather than repair it, you will receive a Computer Device equivalent to or better than the Computer Device you originally purchased from us, as determined by us in our sole and reasonable discretion.

If you have an extended warranty, they should be able to fix whatever issues you are having.

As far as the P8600, I had that on my old R1 and its a GREAT processor. I OCed it via BIOS to 3ghz and had it run at that daily. Never changed it back. It was able to handle any of the games I threw at it. Just my two cents...

It states if your computer couldn't be fixed, then it'd be replaced. So are you having that problem now? Because you clearly stated you just want to get a free upgrade..

I think we don't have the same interpretation on this one, that's the correct paragraph btw, goodie :) I already told you the easy version on how to interprete that, i think i even used caps for some parts.

my OC was stable at 3ghz. I never changed it, I set it and let it do its thing... you have to get the Kingston HyperX ram from Newegg though. 4 gigs at 1333mhz for like $80... if you look up a post by Moo, he shows you how to OC it in the BIOS... very easy.

    1 Unlink the mem
2 set FSB at 1333 to match the ram
3 run stability tests to make sure you don't fry your comp
    4 ????
    5 Profit

Better get a cheap ram with 1066 Mhz. There is almost no difference between 1066 and 1333 except for the price. Save some bucks.

He doesn't have that configuration. He has a p8600 and a 260gtx. If he wants to OC he needs the faster ram.

I bought an Alienware off of Ebay when they were just starting out which was a Area-51m 776(the first laptop to support a 128 megabytes of video ram which was the first video card worth a damn in laptops). As much stuff as there is with warranties now with dell I wish I would have had some type or warranty with the one I got. when I bought it it had never crossed my mind. I'm still typing with it now tho so it was a good laptop but I could have used a warranty on it numerous times saving me thousands of dollars.

Your remark about dell though is blasphemous. Dell has excellent customer support. Before dell owned Alienware warranties weren't even transferable to anyone. I do think though that letting PC manufactures push you around when dealing with there company is total nonsence.

I can say that my laptop beats any R2 except for those with the extreme cpus. Then they are better by maybe 10%. Just upgrade your R1, enjoy better battery life and a very powerful laptop.

The spec's of your R1 are just fine and should be able to run almost anything. As far as tell some one to keep their opinions to them self, dont ask for them here, this is a forum, and don't talk smug when we all know your motives are unhonorable.

Thanks Turmoil. I overclocked before...but I took it off and this past weekend I did it again. Except when I went to play SC2 it was terrible. I suppose it's because of my RAM? I never knew that. I overclocked through BIOS to 1333 just like you said and I will most certainly look into that new RAM.
Thanks Scook that was good input.
