    Hi guys!

I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with overclocking the Core 2 Quad Q9000 (Stock 2.0 Ghz) processor?

I currently have that one, sitting in an R1, and was wondering if there is possible to boost the cores up a bit?
I checked my BIOS, and it gives me the posibillity to access a "Overclock" menu, where i can select "automatic" or "unlinked".

I've heard that you possibly might need to use a software called SetFSB?
Could someone please tell me how to OC this processor properly? also, if anyone has any older experiences with this processor and what limits i could push it to and still obtain a stable clock?

    My current temps, at stock is as following;
    Max (non-load): 40 C*
    Max (On load) : 59 C*

I'm using a cooling-mat which is blowing directly under the PC aswell, so my CPU-fan isn't blowing at all when PC is left without any load.

What is a good max-temp for the processor to sit at when being on max-load for all the 4 cores? I think that 75-80 c* should be the max, but does anyone have other advices?

Thanks guys, i know that i've asked at the right place.
    - Scott.

I used to keep mine @ 2,4Ghz in BIOS stable but didn't need it back then for 24/7.

Ok, ill go ahead and try to achieve that sum when i've done my homework :)

Anyhow; Is 59 C* on max load a good or bad starting point? (Without the CPU fan even moving, almost)
    Cheers guys,
    - Scott.

59C is a very good temp for max load

When you say 'max load', what did you run?

OCCT 4.0 "Peryanovska" or some bull like that :)
I will be posting screenshots of before clock and after,
currently running to see if its a stable clock that i've obtaine on 2,4 ghz.

Edit: OK, so here are the results.

    Before clock;
    http://i39.tinypic.com/aonk29.png

    After clock;
    http://i44.tinypic.com/34zgbhc.png

Not a too long test afterwards, but everything is working perfectly fine in my opinion.

Is it any reason why _NOT_ to push this further?

    Edit2:

Did an soft overclock on the 5870s aswell,
800/1100, hottest sensor in the system is currently running 71C* with GPU and CPU stresstest.

2.3 Ghz was the max for me.

Can you use throttlestop with the q9000? If so you can boost the voltage and go higher. But again you'd have to through windows. Search throttle stop guide for details on the program. Its here on NBR. Also if your temps are good, no reason not to go higher.

DR; check my last screenshot posted. Would you say that those are good temps? (The last pic is after OC is applied to both GPUs and CPU.

I don't know if its possible to use throttlestop, but ill definitely check it out, also, do you have a guide / hint about how much i should raise the voltages? I know there is an mathematic deal for this on desktop CPUs, does this also apply to notebooks, or is there something special?

Also, what is a good max-temp that the cores should never go above? I'm planning on having the lappy for a while still, so i don't want to completely grind down the lifetime of it.

Ok, Doctor, so i opened up Throttlestop now and i noticed that i can lower the volt, but not increase it. Is there something i need to unlock / hack?

    Edit:
In Bios, under the overclock-menu it sais:

    CPU Frequecy: 2.00 Ghz
    CPU Multiplier : 8.5
    Unlocked CPU: NOT Detected
    Memory Frequency: 1066 Mhz
    Memory Channel Mode : Dual
    Memory CAS latency: 7

Select Clock Mode : [Auto or UnLinked]
    Memory Frequency : 1066
    FSB Frequency : 1066

Does this mean that i can unlock the CPU?

Hi, inzelux, only extreme CPUs have unlocked multi, like the QX9300.
That's why it sais 'not detected'

Okay, is there any way to flash the BIOS with higher voltage / unlock higher voltage?

What would be the best, reasonably priced processor to upgrade an R1 with?

Weird.. for some reason, only Extreme CPU's can rise voltage using Throttlestop.. why??

A QS Q9200.. it has unlocked multiplier, and is a extreme cpu in some way.. it can go as high as a QX9300.

yea, Core 2 and i-7 definitely use different chip sets and architecture.. You could fit an R2 mobo in the R1 chassis though.

I see. Staying with the Core 2 then, i think.. The Mobo probably costs a s.. load of cash, aswell as the fact that some of the devices that fits the r1 mobo, won't fit the R2 mobo? Or is it just an move-move switch?

Pretty sure, and not worth it.. Only the i7 920XM/940XM beats a well overclocked QX9300/Q9200.. But the second generation i7 (i.e. Sandy Bridge) is a different story, they perform really well. Anyway for games a QX9300 should be enough for next two years.

By the way, check here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/609035-gtx-480m-video-alienware-m17x-r1-12.html

Someone is testing a HD 6970m on a R1. Try to give him some advides, he is getting the "can't load ccc ..." error message.. And I know you have some experience with AMD/ATI and R1 ;)
