Just wondering what the pros and cons about each are as ive never really looked into it?
Im asuming the R2s are alot more reliable but how/why? And what are the differences between various components?

I should really pull my finger out and read more often!

    R1 - Core 2 Duo/Core 2 Quad. nVidia 9400 Chipset
    R2 - Core i3/i5/i7 duals&quads. Intel P55m chipset (afaik). RGBLED option

    Major differences

Huge difference, mainly in technology and hardware, and i dont even own an m17x :)

Anyway same thing applies to other laptop builders.
The R2 uses new i7 cpu processors, newer ddr3 ram and newer crossfire/sli setups compared to older ones.

m17x r1 started with a system equal to xps m1730 which i currently own (even same cpu and sli gpu) then evolved using quad core processors on montevina chipset, with a rebranded 9800m GTX known as gtx260m (and most commonly used in alot of laptops nowadays) in HybridSLI.

The good about m17x was the hybrid sli, with an igp (usually 9400m G) for power saving beside the sli setup. Those can work together, like a tri-sli.

Anyway long story short, between r1 and r2 theres a technology generation leap, and its worth it.

Yeah i figured thered be a massive leap in tech, especially the Chipset, sompletly forgot about the SLI evolution though :p

Thanks for the concise breakdown anyway, saved me an hour of reading reviews and stuff to get the info I wanted, much appriciated.

Roll on the R3's cant wait to see what their about now, as I expect most other people cant wait either.
