4Gb of RAM are still ok for gaming and such. Max you can do is 8Gb @1333Mhz
GPU's confirmed in the M17x above 260M are: mobility 4870 and 5870 and nVIDIA 280M.
The mobility 6970 has not been tested in this system...yet, if you want to be the first to give us a good news, you're more than welcome.

The best CPU you can get is the QX9300.

L.EDIT: Oh, and a RGB LED screen would be a great upgrade ;)

What do you mean by "the GPU vent is dead"? The fan? If it's the right one as you face the machine, i have a new one laying around.

Get a new GPU fan off of Ebay or something. Get a ES/QS QX9300. And I believe your computer can run 5870s...? 5870s in an R1. Q9200 is around $210. 5870s will run around $400-$500. That is a lot more power. It would seem like a new laptop.

I agree.. the QX9300 is a beast! you can push the overclock as high as your temperature allow you to overclock using ThrottleStop.

How much do you want to expend in the upgrades?

These ones have the fans, heatsinks and CF ribbon already:
New Alienware Dell m17x Dual 1GB ATI 5870 Crossfire Kit With Fans | eBay

And the price is fair so a good option imo.
The RGB LED panel was officially sold with the M17x R2 but it's plug and play in the M17x ;)
It's a very high gamut screen 95% and not afraid to stand by the Dell U2410.

If the transaction for the QX9300 falls thru, let me know, I'm parting mine out and already have 2 sets of 8Gb sticks, Kingston HyperX and Hynix.

    Cheers

In games and applications that make use of a dual GPU setup, SLi or PhysiX you'll see a good amount of performance bump, depending on how much these are optimised for a dual GPU setup.
