Hello everyone
Now this question i will go with overall for the games that i play at this moment.
Now about The witcher 2. I though that my alienware m17x-R2, could play this game smooth, on medium or high settings. But after trying some different things in CCC and in the game settings i can't get it to play smooth at all. it's laggy and it is very hard to play.
Now it isn't the only game that i cannot play smoothly on medium or high settings. I have problems with Dragon Age 2 and Brink for exampel.
Now i got 5870 crossfire on, with a 820 i7 processor. I don't understand why i can't play these games with these configuration i have in my computer.
Hope some of you know what is wrong with this. And yes i have checked stealthmode, but after what i can see it isn't on. When i click on the the little button in the corner of the computer and it asked if i wanna enable it or cancel the move, and i just cancel it, so i quess it isn't on then?
Don't understand why i cannot play my games smoothly. the only game that i can play smoothly and on high settings is HoN and counter strike :b
Hope some of you can help, ty!

1. Make sure Crossfire is on in the CCC.
2. Make sure you are on the High performance power setting.
3. Download The Stealth mode Indicator. Make SURE stealth mode isn't on, then reboot.
To make sure both gpus are running, download gpu-z and check the core clocks and temps on both when you run a game. -
Turn off UberSampling, smooth as butter for me.

I've been having similar problems in many games. Underperformance for the system. I already had all of NiteSkie's suggestions in play, and have tried countless drivers: 11.4, now 11.5.
TW2 is stuttering and slow even on the lowest settings. Uber Sampling is off as well. -
wow good thing I havent purchased this yet.
Looking forward to it aswell.
So disapointing. -
I'll test it later on the R3.
-
^^
Great!
If you can run it on ur R3 our R2s should blaze through this!
Looking forward to your results! -

Yup, spec-wise the r2 should blow through the game with everything maxed out, but somewhere, somehow things are just not working right. I get a lot of flickering in the game as well - like another app is trying to come forward but none actually are.
-
I have an r3 and am experiencing debilitating texture flickering..incredibly distracting in the Witcher 2. i read that i am supposed to turn off the AMD Catalyst AI, but don't see that option in my catalyst dashboard. I have had this problem in multiple games. I've gotten rid of it by 1) turning the grass textures to off (in the first Witcher game) and then 2) in WOW by switching from DirectX 10 to 11. Anybody got a clue on how to accomplish this? Thanks.

FYI All, be sure to check in over @ the thread in the Gaming section of NBR. Useful tips may have been posted (I haven't checked since I'm not playing Witcher 2). -

1. The Witcher 2 , Catalystcreator (Twitter name) posted they are working on a Cap and driver for this game. Something about crossfire not working correctly.
2. Dragon Age 2, on their official forums they have a post up of a known issue with ATI cards and crossfire, also of another issue that the game stutters heavy unless you hold the right mouse button. They have announced that it will be fixed in the next update , also , visit their forum, go to technical pc help , and download the latest patch, it fixed alot of issues for me.
3. Brink does not support crossfire as of yet, only optimized for single gpu as listed in the 11.5a RC3 notes.
P.S. - Im posting this from my phone, very sorry if its sloppy.
My Specs for comparrisons if needed -
m17x r2
i7 940xm
2x 5870 Crossfire
8gb of ram
250g SSD
1920x1200 RGB -
Was simply referring to XF vs single card.
Edit:
Installing game ATM.
Will give update on playability when its done ^^
BTW: i7 720 + XF5870s (8 gbs of ram tho should not matter). -
wow...
game is UNPLAYABLE.
Unable to see anyting on sreen.
Like a large fog is bloking eery ting.
Horrible
Edit:
Pic attached.
On 11.5 catalyst.

XF on or off makes no difference.
Low spec on settings.
Edit:
Fixed it by setting all CCC options to "application settings"
Played game for 5 mins without XF on Med spec (auto detected). Graphics were so horrible I closed game
So disappointing -

If you want crossfire, try forcing AFR on and Dirt 2 profile using Radeonpro.
-
Thanks tho.
No flickering for me
But no difference in FPS either,
Confirmed with GPUz that crossfire was enabled/disabled.
No increase in FPS. -
Well, I can only hope new driver and caps will be released soon to address this issue. Untill then, playing with Dirt 2 profile on high with disabled: Motion Blur, SSA, DoF, CinemDoF, Ubersampling and Vertical Sync.
Getting 40-60 FPS smoothly. -
Here is my solution, I disabled my Crossfire in CCC. I have an AMD 965(3.8ghz) and two HD5770(slightly overclocked) in crossfire and could play Witcher 2 on medium setting with low screen size:decently. Once I disabled my crossfire, I set the game settings to Ultra and 1920x1080 res. Also disabled "Ubersamping". Now the game is way better and on Ultra setting. A patch will probly come out soon to fix the crossfire issue. Hope this helps. Ha-do-ken
-
For me disabeling "Ubersampling" mostly solved the performance issue. Played it on "Ultra" setting only with "Ubersampling" and "Anti-Aliasing" disabled on 1900x1200 (a resoltion where in my opinion anti-aliasing is unnecessary anyway) and I would say it runs with 30+ frames.
My system
AW M17X-R2 i7-740, Xfire ATI5870, SSD, 4GB Ram.
Game looks great.
Enabeling or disabeling XFIRE neither improved nor decreased performance - which proofs that there is a lot of room for a more fluent gaming experience, once Xfire is supported because it definitly doesn't get any performance advantages if my M17X is running with Xfire active. Also performance doesnt increase if XFire is disabled.

I don't know guys why some ppl got so many issue with games I play dragon age 2 with hi Rez texture mod at almost max setting 40-30 fps rift almost max setting 60-30 fps and the witcher 2 almost max setting I didnt check fps but smooth and good , ther's guide around for tweaking setting of every game for better fps and not loosing it's beauty . -
Screen shot with FRAPS pls
I cant get close to that and I have the exact same system as you but 720. -
After playing it a little bit longer I must mention, that if there are a lot of objects, fire effects (burning houses) and a lot of people (troops moving) the frame rate drops to 20-25 FPS.
Also thanks to FRAPS I must say that with Xfire disabled the FPS count is 2-3 FPS higher than with Xfire enabled.
Means for me I will wait playing it until Xfire Support is availeable or I have my M18X with GTX485 or GTX580 SLI -

Game plays really well with 1 card disabled. I've been reading that AMD crew will pull a CAP anytime soon to address the xfire issue. There is a lot of headroom for improvement performance wise, since with a single 5870 the game run smooth at native res and medium to high settings. I'm loving the game so far
-
I posted in the witcher forum as well. But I just wanted to comment on the horrible framerates I have been getting
. I have an r2 with xfire 5870s and 740QM. It's always under 25 fps regardless of settings. This runs really badly. I dont think it's my computer as other games seem fine. Any help would really be appreciated. I posted my troubleshooting steps in the other forum -

CptXabaras Overclocked, Overvolted, Liquid Cooled
a little update here.
I've tried with the radeonpro trick and by my great surprise... it worked!
Running the game with profile from DIRT2, crossfire method set to Alternate Frame Rendering and.. wow you should try it! Now the game run smooth with v-sync on 1920x1200 detail set between high and ultra. Ubersampling Off.
this are my settings -
Just another observation. I saw this thing about "ubersampling" too, but could never find it. The problem is the config tool hides/flickers this "ubersampling" underneath the "Input Settings" button when you go to Advanced Mode. The reason for this config/button weirdness is the windows dialogs aren't DPI friendly. Setting to 100% fontsize for DPI will fix this config tool. Or you can do like I did and kind of move the mouse around a bit to see if need be.

The AMD Catalyst 11.5b hotfix already out. Some guys at Guru3D forum mentioned the frame rate got improvement with this hotfix, unfortunately some of them also encountered a new lighting problems. Don't know if it's only affecting certain systems or a widespread problem. Try to install and see the result. Roll back to old driver if it's unacceptable to you.

Some horrible coding in Witcher2. Doesn't even come close to Crysis2 graphics, but requires twice the hardware to run well.

I gave up playing this game. With Crossfire enabled I get insane screen flickering. After about a minute I get a BSOD if I have Crossfire enabled.
-
doesnt look anything special to me im afraid
-
Atleast view it at 100 % browser zoom, pics gets stretched.. then I will respect your honest opinion.
-
i did.
but what i will say is that im fully aware things look better in motion. so im sure it looks great when its 'live' -
Like how, like while fighting? -
no i mean screenshots often look worse than the actual moving game
-
Are you saying the detail is gone if it's moving? ..
-
uch. no.
im saying ive seen some amazing graphics in the games im playing, but when i take a screenshot it doesn't look nearly as nice. -
Hey guys, I'm trying to run Witcher 2 in 3D on my laptop and its running at about 20 FPS. Is this supposed to be normal because I think this type of hardware should be running it much smoother than that.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!

3D any game on maximum settings will be an fps killer. Especially on laptops.
Even getting 30fps on Ultra is a challenge.
You could look into adding voltage to your 580m(If you haven't already) and overclock it a bit then play it.
Look into this thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...throtting-fix-no-need-modify-system-bios.html
Good luck and have fun with Dark Mode -
Wow I didn't realize it would struggle so much but I lowered the resolution and had the game on high spec in 3D and that's when it was giving me 20 FPS. It wasn't maxed out.
-
As the title says, I bought The Witcher today. I usually don't play RPGs on my PCs, just mainly MMOs. But since I finally have a laptop that can actually play games with good performance, I figured I'd give this one a try. I've been wanting to play for a while and so far I am having a good time with it.
I was curious as to what settings and OC others have played this game at. I currently have an OC of 750/1800 and have all settings set to high. I have anisotropic Filtering at 6x and anti-aliasing at 2x. Granted I don't know what either of them do. I do get some minor hiccups when I play. Nothing that is too major, but I figure I should probably turn some settings down.
I am thinking about trying out the .92vbios and OCing a little higher to see if I get some better performance. So far I enjoy the game and have only hit 61C while playing. Although I've only played for about an hour.
Anyone mind shedding some light on what Anisotropic Filtering and Anti-aliasing does. -
Hey man, you should get all the latest patches, and in your options, crank everything to the highest. Then disable SuperSampling. It provides almost no image improvement but because it renders the image at 4 times the resolution, your framerate tanks. Anisotropic filtering is a way of helping the textures in the near distance such as on footpaths. I always have this on 16x. Never really had problem with performance tweaking it so I always leave in on high. Finally, tweak your antialiasing to your liking. 2x-4x is good anything beyond 8x I hardly notice and is a waste of GPU power. What antialiasing does is that it smooths out the image:
http://www.gemaga.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/anti-aliasing.thumbnail.png
See how the jagginess is reduced?
PS All that is assuming you are playing The Witcher 2. If not then I'm sorry, my bad but some of the facts still remain.
