Uh, $4000 and no SSD? :-/ Btw, I think you can get at least 10% off if you call in and talk to the sales rep (if you don't qualify for EPP).

If you really want to save (lots of) money, do the upgrades (CPU, RAM, HD) yourself. It's extremely expensive for the specs above, imho.

Yeah these "deals" always involve forcing 8gb, and high capacity HDDs on us...lol...no needed

Well, the SSD question you guys answered for me yesterday... LOL... it only boots the program faster but does not increase performace of the game, no affect on FPS, so there is no point for me to get SSD. With a regular HD you get more space for cheap.

As for calling in, yeah, I usually call in to order my computers, I was just playing with the config tool and thought $410 off is nice. Wonder what the sales rep would do in terms of discounts. Just never heard of a sales rep giving over $400 in discounts, but if you say Alienware reps do, its good to know. I, like most of you guys am now planning to wait out for the M18x!!! I would love the HD 6970 in Crossfire to kick some serious butt! Ha. Hopefully the M18x will also have 3D option, which would be awesome.

You have 2 drive bays - no reason NOT to get an SSD. Especially if you plan to spend this ridiculous amount of $$$ on a laptop. "Only"? You should try it out first before commenting. :p :) I'd say it's quite significant performance boost overall.

I think it's funny, even with quad-core extreme CPU you're laptop will feel pretty sluggish since the hard drive will be the bottleneck in anything but FPS. I'd take 60GB SSD over 500GB HD space any time.

Shoot at $4k you could pick up 2 pretty well spec'd m17x-r2's if you buy them right and have some patience, I don't understand why somebody would pay $4k for that rig anymore at all. And killa joe the SSD is something you'll never understand until you use one for a week or two and then you'll never go back again, oh and enough with the Envy crap in the AW threads ;)

Lol, I would love to know what you mean by that. How can you pick up 2 well spec'd m17x rs for that price? and have patience? Unless you buy a used R2, how will you get it much cheaper than using the $410 off and the specs I have? Unless you have bare bones and no Crossfire or SLI...I'd love for you to show me how or where.

As for the SSD, again, if it does not boost GAME FPS, or smoothness, or play, why should it matter if it takes 10 to 30 more seconds to load your game up? Once in the game everything is the same regardless of HD or SSD..... I will keep an open mind and would love to try it one day, but again, where is the logic?

Haha, and the Envy? Don't diss the Envy please! :p ;) Also, it does come with 2 years full warranty, something Alienware lacks in support. You get 1 year, and the Alienware warranty does not cover paint and finish! I'd be pretty P'od if my M17x started chipping paint after 30 days....the sales rep said sorry, but you'll have to buy a special policy! Yeah right, let's see HP pull that crap on anyone...bah...all that said and done, I still want a future Alienware.

My suggestion is to look at this thread. Give it a quick read.
What was your best notebook upgrade?

It's good because it's a mixed audience. All I know is when I'm doing installs and restarts, my system takes under a min for a complete restart, Win 7 boot time is 15sec. And I'm never waiting on my computer It's always waiting on me.

The way you get two loaded AW's at $4k is Outlet(previously ordered new)+coupons+tactics/hagling and you have two of them that are in new shape just not "new" if that makes sense. I'm not dissing the Envy just the envy is a different forum and don't want to stir any possible flaming lol. Alienware will warranty the paint if it starts chipping in 30 days if it's not due to damage you caused. And the one thing you're failing to see is in-home NBD service is standard with AW it's not with HP, I don't personally enjoy shipping my laptop off and waiting 3-6 weeks to get it back which is what you get if an Envy goes bad on standard warranty ;)
