I use Arctic Silver 5 on my 920XM. I've also been recommended IC Diamond or MX-4. The only problem I see with IC Diamond is it can be very abrasive and since you have to repaste your CPU once every 12-18 months, the diamond pastes can scratch the die when you clean off the old paste.

Great, thanks. I'll order myself some Arctic Silver 5 then.

When I receive the CPU, will I need to flash my BIOS as it mentions on the page in my first post that its best to update to the latest BIOS version. Could you let me know how if I need to and how I would find out my BIOS version?

    Many thanks,
    Charlie

I use the unlocked A10 BIOS. Just search for it on google and you're bound to find one or two forums (including notebook review) that will have it for download. Just make sure to specify the m17x R2 Unlocked A10 BIOS.

Like Radji, I too went with the "Unlocked A10" BIOS. I guess it's more of a preference thing than anything else as the normal A10 BIOS will also allow you to overclock the 920XM up by 5% as a mild overclock. Let us know how things go and how your temperatures are. You'll surely love the fact that you decided to get the 920XM. This certainly reminds me how I felt when I ordered my 920XM and more so of how excited I got when I finally placed it in as an upgrade. This will definitely be one of the upgrades you'll really thank yourself for doing.

Ah, don't forget to get HWiNFO if you haven't yet, so that you can monitor and more importantly, have control over your fans. ;)

I checked my BIOS and I think I currently have A09. I'm not too sure if I will overclock it or not at the moment so I may just go for the stock A10 bios for the time being. I am so looking forward to this arriving now!! :D

I downloaded HWiNFO but couldn't work out how to control my fans or anything like that :( Maybe I am just really dumb or something lol.. I'll have a better look when I get home from work tonight and hopefully find the controls :)

    Thanks everyone! :D

I'm using Shin-Etsu X23D thermal paste atm. You can go with any good quality paste to be honest just make sure you apply it correctly.

Also download and read up on Throttlestop, its an XM's best friend :)

Hey, thanks I've looked at throttlestop and think I might get it, looks like the easiest way to OC a CPU.

I have received my CPU now, but when I check the clock settings, it says that its 2Ghz, is this right? The one I bought off ebay said it would be 3.2ghz:

    NEW Intel Quad Core i7 920XM Mobile 3.2Ghz 8MB CPU QS Q3B8 | eBay

EDIT: Just checked the ACTUAL specs rather than just the title and it says that its only a 2Ghz processor.. :(

3.2Ghz is the max turbo speed. When the CPU is loaded it jumps to that frequency. Install Throttlestop just to monitor what you CPU is doing.

Also you dont have to overclock with Throttlestop. By just increasing the TDP you will get performance gains. Read up on it to understand what it does exactly and how to use it, very impressive piece of software,
