For those interested, I was able to modify the 7970m heatsink to fit inside of the m17x r2. Basically I used a dremel tool with a metal cutting disc and cut the fins to around the size and shape of the original one on the 4870m heatsink.

I then cut the middle bar off the back vent so that I could round out the metal screen to accommodate the rest of the fins. Having the flat middle bar removed also helps a small amount due to not restricting the airflow

The magnesium top piece that covers the motherboard needs to be removed in order to install the card with the triple pipes. There is also a peg on the bottom side of the magnesium cover that needs to be cut off to allow the pipes to fit, but other than that no other modifying of the case will be needed

After the card is installed you can put the magnesium cover back on and reassemble. After cutting, the fins were pretty beat up so I filed and straightened them out the best I could get them. Many people might not try this mod for fear up ****ing up the heatsink fins but trust me, you can make them pretty ****ing ugly and have them still work well. Here's what mine looked like before filing the rough edges and straightening the fins out. I was getting 67c with bent up fins. Now I'm getting 65c max on dying light max settings with slightly straighter fins.

After some modification using some metal ducting tape I've routed the air straight into the fins and am now getting 63c max temp while running Dying light on max settings. Other games like ultra street fighter 4 and phantasy star online 2 max out at 52c

There's some screen shots of the temps. I'm currently uploading a video screen capture that I will post a link to on youtube showing the temps while I'm playing. It was running at 62-64c max. I'm bummed that when I hit the end button I noticed the temps dropped back to 63c from 64c...so in the video you will see the temp fluctuate but you don't get to see it drop back to 63c at the end of the video but I promise it did. I will post more vids of temps from other popular new titles too so people can compare their results with the double pipe, or the triple, if anyone else can do the mod, so we as a community might maybe improve on what I have accomplished. @toto29620 doooooooo it =) It's fairly simple and I have no dremel experience just common sense.

Youtube killed the quality so bad after uploading that the numbers are kind of hard to see. Anyone have any suggestions on a better way to keep the quality the same as original video capture?

So after some more tweaks to my mod I have now got my temps down to 59c max on dying light with it averaging at 57-58c! I used after burner to capture my gameplay with temp. I also figured out how to make the numbers easier to see. Took a 5 minute video so you can see that the card is warmed up and still not going above 59c even once! I bet I have the coolest running 7970m in a m17x r2 hehe. Glad I was able to contribute something to the community =)

55-56c max temp now lol wtf...I think it's safe to call this the ultimate cooling mod for the m17x r2 with 7970m

Should be a straight fit. I've upgraded my brother's M18x-R1, which had 6970m, with 7970m and the heat-sink was perfect fit. Take a look at the thermal pad size though, I think it was different.

It's quite some time since I was in Spain, so I don't really know where you can get some locally, but you can always try eBay :)
