So after a bit of hassle I am finally getting a replacement. He said I need to confirm the specs but I would like your opinions on this.

Here are my current specs (R2:

    i7 720qm 1.6GHz

    4GB RAM

    5870m Crossfire 1GB

(The rest of the specs do not matter as I use my own HDDs and external monitor)

    Replacement Specs (R3):

    i7 2720QM (2.2GHz, 6MB, 4C)

    4GB 1333MHz Dual Chan. RAM

    6970m 2GB w/ PowerExpress

Now as you can see the processor is a huge upgrade but I am worried that the single 6970m 2GB will be a huge gimp to my current cross 5870m 1GB set up. I will probably ask him to at least upgrade this to 580m or M18x for dual card configuration.

What are your thoughts on the video card guys? Do you think I should ask it to be upgraded to a 580m or M18x w/ Dual Card configuration at least?

    Thanks,

Try to get the M18x, you had dual cards so it should be replaced with a dual card system.

I would demand an M18x. Your R2 is aluminium and replacing it with a plastic R3 would be a downgrade in build quality.

Awesome, any other reasons? I would already think that'd be enough anyway to get the change anyways but more is better I guess. :)

    Thanks

    Less upgradability?

You can upgrade your R2 to dual 6970m's + 940XM Cpu and smoke any R3. Im not sure if this can qualify as a valid reason though.

With the R3, you're getting a slightly smaller laptop, and you like big laptops which is why you got the R2? lol grasping at straws, but it's worth it. At the very very least you should get a 6990m.

Demand dual 6990's if you can :D.

Or the 6970's are good too.

Excellent. I have secured a great replacement

    AWESOME! ;D

Downgrade on wireless card but that doesn't really matter. I'm sure the net performance won't really be effected. He also gave me 15 months McAfee which isn't bad.

Hahahahah could do if I knew where it was and I was Alienware laptop savy :p

But, really, thanks for the help you guys gave me and now hopefully I may be able to game in piece without issues. That being said, I wonder how Crysis 2 will play :p Ran very well on 5870m Crossfire, should run just as well :)

Hi, I am same boat in hopes of getting a replacement I have ongoing issue of plugged in , not charging and as well as charger not being detected by the system :( my system has 321 days of remaining warranty and I haven't been able to game on this thing cause of these issues that keep popping out.

what kind of system should I ask for a replacement because to own a $2k+ paper weight is not my forte.

Harry what system specs did the end up giving you, I think the link is broken.

Ah the system specs they ended up giving to me to are:

    2720QM 2.2GHz (4C)

    6990M Crossfire 2GB

    4GB of 1333MHz RAM

    320GB HDD

I will be using my own HDDs and RAM because their's are too expensive. The replacement will be arriving in about 6 - 8 days from now and I can hardly wait. I might be able to do some 3D as I use a screen with 3D capabilities at the moment.

Here we go I put the replacement specs up on a proper image site:

    M18X R1 Replacement Specs

As for a replacement it needs to have broken a couple of times at least and then you need to ask for a replacement in which you have to argue that the system is broken and has broken an intolerable amount of times. You have law on your side, use it. Such as the 1979 Trade of Goods Act (May be UK only, you'll need to check) In which it states that the product has to last a reasonable amount of time without technical difficulties and it is fit for your purpose, I.e; gaming is the purpose of my machine but it vary to others.

Congrats on the replacement. Do you have to pay any additional fees for the upgraded cards? I have seen people get replacements but pay the difference for the video cards they requested. If not, you really got a deal!

No I didn't have to pay any upgrade fees for the 6990M replacement. I was lucky he didn't give me the 560Ms as they made the system within value range and are also faster than the 5870Ms. I tried to get the 580Ms for the kicks which he obviously declined as that was too expensive, but he did offer to upgrade the cards in the replacement for £500 which was a bit expensive but nice of him to offer. So instead he gave me the 6990M Crossfire instead which is practically better / on par with the GTX 580M excluding the PhyX feature which would have been nice. Just need to find some good memory to slot into the new replacement that is incoming. :)

Nice job. Good upgrade. I wish my R2 would die several times over so I could do the same. My R2 is a beast though. Can't kill it.

Aye the M17x R2 is a great laptop it's a shame that the R3 is a plastic chassis which put me off accepting that as a replacement. And mind you it took about a month's worth of constant emailing to dell and phone calls to get this. Well worth the effort though.

Hi Guys I just some advice on my repacement quote I have an m17 r2 they have given me two options one it to repace it with the m17x r3 spec are
    i7 2630
    3d screen
    8gb 1333 ram
    2x 750gb hhd
    killer wireless
    and the gtx 580m

The other option is a refund, which should be around $3200 and I thought with that I can just buy a new M18x. Im Australia and can currently get 13% off. What should I do?

Could you ask for a M18x for a replacement?
If not, then getting a refund and then buy a M18x seems to be a good choice, for me the build quality of the R2 is too good to be replaced with the plastic build of the R3. :)

I have asked for the m18x but they say that it's the m17x r3 or the refund, So I think I'll take the refund and then buy the m18x. Thanks

Definitely get refunded. That money can buy you a great M18x.
They should get this idea of the M17x R3 being a replacement for the M17x and M17x R2 out of their heads.
    I won't think twice, IMO.

    Good luck

I sent an email to dell asking for a refund and since that email they have come back offering me a M18x with the following.
    i7 2720
    2x 750gb hdd
    8gb 1600 ram
    and 6970's crossfire.
I have emailed them again to see if I can upgrade to the 6990's and/or how much for the 580's

As you can see in my sig I too have a R2 which is being replaced at the moment.

I didnt get M18x for a few reasons though as many of you would say its the more equivalent replacement for R2. However I chose to get the system with the mentioned spec because I wanted to loose the weight and the metal. If you want mobility or even casually keep shift the machine's location within your home or college apartment etc just as you would a comp weighing 2 or 3kg, then M18x is definitely not the one to get.

Remember at the end of the day, its about what you want to use it for. Of course some of you might say, get it and sell it if you dont want to keep it. Well thats a good point, but it wasnt available in my region per se. So the money making idea was not feasible.

However I am not losing in terms of the money I paid for my original system was a Ist Dell XPS M1530-->2nd Dell XPS M1530-->Dell Studio XPS 1640-->Alienware M17x R2-->Alienware M17x R3 with BD-ROM + extra shipped component ( Slotload BD- Burner). I am literally getting additional $2200 of hardware.

Each time they resolved the case, they do something atrocious right after I receive it. I am right now praying for peace and time away from having to call Dell on the phone. Its become such a ritual that I am feel so unsettled and yearning to have a machine that I know is mine and can use without thinking about replacement until unless its genuine hardware/technical issue, rather than silly oversights like sending a 2008 manufactured WLED panel for a Alienware M17x R2 which was manufactured in 2010 November with RGBLED specs. Such has been my experiences!

Its all great that I have dealt with them and got upgrades in terms of notebook etc. But trust me the tedious process of hanging on the phone talking and repeatedly describing, emailing etc...is akin to a lawyer fighting for a case.

I think sexy would be an understatement for this system. Trying to replace HDDs and memory but the battery won't budge. It's stiff as a brick and won't pop out  Normal? :p

Well it's taken about two day's, and 12 emails but in the end Dell has give me the 6990's. So now I just need to get me a new intel 510 ssd or the crucial m4.
Can I ask is it recommended to repaste the cpu/gpu's even if Im not thinking of overclocking the laptop?.
and does anyone know what sort of 1600 speed ram Dell will put into the M18x as I was thinking about getting some Hyper X stuff if it's warranted.
