I picked up a refurb M17x R2 from the Dell outlet. It has great spec in every way except that it only has a single 160gb hard drive in the second hard drive bay.

What I plan to do in a little while is take out the 160gb drive and put two larger ones in and use the RAID0 functionality. Ideally, I'd like to hook up the 160gb drive via USB (I have a suitable adapter) and clone it onto the RAIDed drives to avoid having to set up Windows all over again.

Has anyone tried this before? Is it possible? I was thinking something like the free Clonezilla package, but what I'm not sure about is if the RAID will appear different to Windows and make it not boot or something.

Thanks for any advice on this!

You can do this.... but it is more trouble than it is worth.
(read.... takes more time than what I will post below)

Best thing is to back up your data and programs (acronis, etc. should do this for you).
Reinstall windows in raid (use dell os disk etc..).
Reinstall data and programs (you can use the acronis etc.. image from within windows.. just install the program first)
There are links on this site to re-create your "alienware feel"

    Good luck
