    Hai gaiz!
Quick story followed by a question. I was dog sitting for my neighbor and the stupid chihuahua chewed through the cable to my 240w adapter. Unfortunately the dog survived as it was unplugged. So I have to purchase a new adapter. My question is that is there a way I can take a part from the 240w adapter like an eeprom and replace the same part in the 330w adapter to make the id cable read 240w so my 580ms will be fully powered?
    Thanks!

Which charger do you have, Flextronix or Delta? Can you take some pictures of the PCB?

I can't offer much advice, but here are some pics I took of the 240W adaptor when I split it.

I was just asking you about your PSU in another thread today :D !

    >>> so how come you still have your 240W? Wouldn't this work better for your xfire 7970Ms than undervolting them?

It wouldn, but I havn't gotten around to getting a 330W, and I don't have the soldering skills to remove the ID chips and test.

Awesome. If it works, can I send you two PSUs for a fee and have you do it? It's an idea I've been sitting on with no idea who to go to for close to a year. And it looks like my 6990s just sold which pushed me over the line on the funds I needed to get 7970s :D I've moved $1200 worth of spare parts this past week. :D Should order the 7970s once ebay releases funds. Using a true 330W adapter would be icing on the cake. :D

Hey DR650SE, do you really think the M17x-r2 can actually handles 7970's crossfire? Or 680 sli?

Don't know about the Nvidia cards, but we'll find out about the 7970s. If timinator94 succeeds with e 330W PSU idea, I'll see if I can pay him to mod one for me. But I think with a mild undervolt, given that the 7970's are 100W just like the 6990s, it's definately feasible. I really banking on the Bios supporting the cards. Fingers crossed.

Have you been able to work out how much power you save from applying an undervolt to your 100W 6990s?

Don't recall exact numbers. I think a lot depended on the game/bench. But probably around 30 or so watts. Rough guess as it's been a while. It was enough to prevent any throttling with the 240W PSU.

The 680M will most likely need a workaround for SLi to function since a dual nVIDIA card setup needs SLi certifications :/

Exactly, thats the issue that was encountered with the 580M.

Also this was in another thread but seemed of interest to those here. Maybe we won't even need the 330W PSU with 7970's

Yes, that difference is what the 6990's need to prevent throttling . So if that's the case then :D

If you would like to use the 330W PSU Alone at the lose of brightness setting and battery charging. You can do this simple mod i did to 330w psu.. Gloop has a good post on it here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/585064-guide-installing-amd-radeon-mobility-6970-6990-your-m17x-r2-single-gpu-crossfirex-447.html#post8460530

    With this you need to
1.always keep Battery out of laptop when PSU is plug in
    2. Restart laptop when you log in after you plug in PSU to laptop (restart is only required when PSU is disconnected then connect back again to laptop)
