I just got my 680M card installed in my M17x R2 and it seems to be working perfectly in Windows 7, but I'm having a fair amount of difficulty getting the drivers to install on Windows 8. I'm pretty familiar with modding INF's but for some reason I haven't found a driver version that will install properly. Any ideas would be awesome.

windows 8 driver signature enforcement.
1) Open command prompt (Admin) windows key + X
2) Type "bcdedit /set {current} testsigning yes" (without quotes) enter.
3) Type exit and reboot.
4) Install
5) Repeat/replace with "bcdedit /set {current} testsigning no" reboot.

Disable driver signing first.

What is it in this inf file that makes it so specific for the R2?
I'd like to change it myself.
Other option would be too make these modded inf threads stickies. -
10DE&DEV = Nvidia, 11A0 = GTX 680M, 043A = M17XR2, 1028 = Dell (PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_043A1028).
Edit three sections, look for "%NVIDIA_DEV.11A0. 0551.1028% = Section210, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_ 05511028" replace 0551 with 043A.

Hi, I'm having some issues.
I don't have a default nvdmn.inf on my installation folder and I tried just copying the whole nvdmn.inf
on the installation folder but nothing seems to work. Any ideas? -
Thats because you have to rename the file to the inf that has the gpu information in it.
Its renamed over every release it almost seems -

As unphoto says, the name has changed for the last 3 releases, there are 36 of them in my display.driver folder!
HTH -
Thanks. I've downloaded the latest version I'm currently running on version a modded 302.92
but every time I try to install the 314 it says could not find compatible graphics hardware.
I'm running it on an alienware m17x r2 840qm if that helps. Sorry but I'm a little new to modded
drivers. -

)
Way back in the day I was chasing around in cricles with that error until I figured I'd downloaded the desktop driver version
Good luck -
Well I downloaded the driver from the link but everytime I try to install it won't let me pass the system check and keep saying "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Did you get the inf? It is a separate link and you will get a page with all the data in it that you have to manually save. I tried to link it for you but it will not work. At the bottom of the disclaimer page is the inf link. Copy it to the display.driver folder and OK the overwrite. -
Well I did what you said but I'm not replacing anyfiles so that means I'm in the wrong folder right? Do you have any clue on why I can't upgrade my driver? This is frustrating to deal with -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Right click on the saved file and select rename. make sure it does not have a 'txt at the end. If it does not then you are in the wrong folder. It is the display.driver (not display driver) under the exe you are running to start the install. You should see 30+ .inf flies in there. -
hold, stop....
What laptop are you using man...?
The modded inf needs to have your laptop in it, it wont have it by default.
This thread mod.inf is for the R2, if you have any other laptop you will need a different modded inf. -

I am not sure Watz25 is using the instal lmethod properly.
install, when HW detection starts, abort the install.
Go to the C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\314.22\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\English\Display.Driver\
Get your modded inf file and rename it to nvmd.inf and replace the one in that location.
Go to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\314.22\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\English\ and run the setup.exe and you are done, thats it. -
.1 -Install Nvidia driver.
.2 -extract.
.3 -Installation failed "No compatible device found">close dialog.
.4 -Browse the extracted Nvidia folder (C:\Nvidia)>open Display.Driver folder>paste/replace nvdmn.inf file.
.5 -Run setup.exe within the extracted Nvidia folder. (green icon .exe)
.6 -Select custom install>next>Check clean install option>uncheck Nvidia update.
.7 -Reboot.
Modded nvdmn.inf http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...e-needed-nvdmn.inf_m17xr2_gtx680m_v314.22.zip >open nvdmn.inf zip folder copy nvdmn.inf file.
Alternative, extract downloaded driver with http://www.7-zip.org/ (right click>select extract to notebook-win8-win7-64bit-314.22-whql-driver.)>open extracted driver folder>browse Display.Driver folder>paste/replace nvdmn.inf file>run setup.exe (within the extracted driver folder) -

Perhaps they still use the same name for a different function.
In the 314.22 release it's the nvmd.inf.
You can check it fairly easy, just open the inf' and the one that has display driver in the first line of text is the file you have to rename it to.
lv2go does not rename their files, that is what the end user must do as it apears -

nvdmn.inf is for dell products, all ids end with 1028=Dell.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...m-driver-assistance-needed-2.html#post9142232 e.g. there's no 675MX listed id, dell doesn't support the card yet. -
Thank you everyone! It was all quite confusing, j95's instructions are fool proof
It worked!

Me again with bad news
Seems that my external displays won't work properly.
Every time I connect my vga display on my laptop the nvdia crashes.
Is it maybe a cause of faulty graphics card or bad installation?
Any ideas guys? -
Remove nvidia drivers, use this guide for a clean install (no Nvidia demos installed, GeForce Experience, etc.) http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/659378-nvidia-drivers-clean-install.html Reinstall driver.
-
I did everything but the kernel is still crashing.
Got any more ideas?
-
can you take a picture and post it here?
If that can't be done, use Nirsoft bluescreen tool
you can use this to see why you are getting a BSOD. -
Yikes!
That's faulty hardware allright
Did you upgrade the laptop yourself?
You can try to re-seat the card but this looks like your soldering is messed up.
If you can, try to re-seat it, but before you do so, take a clear picture from the back and the front. -
Yes unfortunately
All is working well exept for the external displays.
I'll try.
anyone?
-
Go to device manger>show hidden devices>uninstall microsoft driver for the external monitor>reboot>open nvidia control panel>set multiple displays (don't close NvCpl)>plug external monitor (usually faulty vram modules).
If you're having issues with ram, rule out testing with stock ram (gpu shared system memory, not in use due to 4GB vram). -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Just a quick jump in here, you have tested the external display on another machine? Also drop the resolution down before plugging it in just in case it's having sync issues at 1920 maybe?
-
Dude..you make me look bad
you are right the problem was just my tv screen.
I tried it with my old vga display and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the answers guys!
