    Hi

I've installed a Dell 770M in my M17x R2 with unlocked A10 bios, and had the same white screen issue as a lot of people. If I turn HD audio off in BIOS, it works, and I can install the nvidia drivers too, but I have no sound. I tried disabling IGD in BIOS, it doesn't change anything. I've tried Dell and Clevo vbios, but I can't get any sound out of it. There is a little x at the volume control, and doesn't want to go away. I can't install IDT drivers, it says it's not compatible with the hardware. When I put the original GTX 285M back, and turn HD audio on, the audio works. Can someone please tell me a solution?

You could try this... not the same machine but its worth a shot if you haven't tried it already.

I tried everything in http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/750427-alienware-m17x-r2-gpu-best-upgrade-options-gtx-680m-7970m-questions-10.html this thread. I have an RGB LED display, and a 1440x900 CCFL, the same thing happens. Someone here managed to get it working with the 1440x900 display, but there's no talk about the sound. I can also install drivers, and everything works fine, except the sound. I have a 780M too, it does the same thing. Right now I'm reading the thread you showed me. I installed 780M in the R3 with 60Hz screen, and 120Hz screen a bunch of times, and had no issues. I finished GRID 2 in an R3 60Hz with 780M with sound and everything. Too bad I can't do it in the R2, the RGB LED is my favorite screen.

I'm giving up on this :( I tried Dell, Clevo, MSI and Asus vbios on the card. If any of you want to try this: the Dell, Clevo and MSI vbios works but with HD audio disabled, so no sound. With the Asus vbios the image is blurred, that vbios is no use to R2 and 770M owners.

Sorry to hear that, I understand your position with regards to the M17X R2 as there's no other laptop I would upgrade to currently.

You could look at an alternative sound solution like this or this if you would like to keep using the R2. Not ideal, but its a viable workaround if there isnt another way to get your onboard working again.

Im sure there are better alternatives as well, hopefully another member who has more experience with external sound solutions can provide more insight.

I have recently upgraded my M17x R2 from a 580m to a 770m. While the upgrade was smooth I too now have to disable the on board HD audio in order to make the video card work. I have been doing some digging to see if there is a software solution since there appears to be in all my digging no VBIOS release for the 770m that addresses this issue on the M17x R2.

I love the performance I am getting on the 770m over what I had on the 580m. In addition it consumes less power and as a result runs a lot cooler. As a result I do not want to go back to the 580m. I know others have suggested going to the 680m since there is no sound issue with that card and you still get all the benefits of the 770m (plus a little more performance) but the issue I have is I would have to pay double what I paid for the 770m to get a 680m.

I will continue to dig around but it would appear I may reach the same dead end as others since this seems to have been an outstanding issue since a year ago according to dates I saw people first start posting on this. Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can provide.

    Thanks

I am sorry to hear that.
I've had the same problem with my second 7970m.
It just screwed up my audio.
When I swapped the primary card around it finally worked again.
To this day I have no idea what was going on.
