Well, i read a lot about Alienware m17x r2 upgrade, but I'm not a solution to this.
I buy the HD7970M on ebay, and specifically EUROCOM install correctly,
but fan of the card does not work and make me after two minutes playing the notebook restarts.
I could only change the fan speed with HWINFO program, only in this way i could play without crash.
I wonder if they have another solution to be able to run the fan without hwinfo program.

Any information will be very useful thanks.

There have been reports of this happening with the Eurocom cards. The Dell branded 7970Ms are the only models that work 100% with the R2 line-up as far as I know.

Your GPU fan has a maximum RPM of around 4200 from I understand, so use that knowledge when you setup your fan speeds and such. Unfortunately I, too, have to use HWiNFO to control my fans. (6970M)

Aside from that, I'm not sure... o.o

My fans seem to be working fine. I upgraded last year to 7970m from EUROCOM, but i flashed the vbios using RJT vbios as the eurocom flash gave me a blank screen. You COULD try reflashing your vbios to that one and see if that sorts your problems?

Eurocom sold you Dell branded card. Eurocom switched to dell branded cards because loads of users complained about HDMI not working on Eurocom/Clevo branded GPU's. But the world is not perfect, and while Dell branded cards solved HDMI problem, they introduce another, GPU FAN controll problems, and even worse, users who have XM cpu in their machines reported that their CPU fan is also stuck at one speed/not working properly.
So, end user had to decide what he really want, or, (dell branded) HDMI output working, or (Eurocom/Clevo) FANs.

Sadly, you will not be able to get your fans working an AUTO, even with Vbios Flash, more, vbios flash can take you to the situation when you will see only black screen and no POST.
Only solution is to make HW info auto-start with windows to controll the fan/s.
However, if you feel you don't need HDMI, like me, and Auto-Fan controll is something more important to you, you can always ask Eurocom to swap the card for you, for their own branded card.

I've been away from the forums for some time, like 2-3 months, and information provided by me may be overdated, and solution to your problem available on this forums. But as far as i know, at the time i was upgrading, you had to choose what is more important for you, HDMI, or Auto-FAN controll.

Remember that if you would need to connect your laptop to an external screen, while HDMI may not work on Eurocom/Clevo card, VGA port IS working, and you are free to use it :D

For me the answer was clear, R2 have a BEAUTYFULL RGB screen, and i dont need to hook it up to my 42inch LCD, or Home cinema Audio system, i want my laptop to work, and my card not to burn because of HWinfo Fan controll may fail.

    hope this helps

    PEACE!

The 680 will still need hwinfo for fan control.

No problem. We get your point.

    Muchas gracias.

Ah i dunno what to do. I want to upgrade my 5980s but I really dont want to loose hdmi audio or video.

How much better does the 680m out perform the 7980m? is it worth the 200$ extra?

    5980 = 5870?
    7980 = 7970?

Well i geuss statisticly it's about 8% but, i bought it because it is more stable and has better drivers.
I have HDMI out, working like it should.
If money is an issue? Just take the 7970m and get a bios fir it that delivers what you need

not sure if any of you are aware, DELL 7970m's that eurocom (upgradeyourlaptop) provide tend to auto shutdown itself at a certain temperature ( estiamted around 83-85 degree celcius). Tho this may not be a factor for some of you as you life in a cold climate, some of us who happen to stay in places like Australia, Brazil, India etc will come across this problem due to our hot climates. I eventually gave up with the 7970m and reverted back to my 680m

I (like many users here) bought mine from Lannbot. He is very trustworthy but do know he will only accept bank transfers or Western Union. No Paypal!

I've been away from the forums for a while but, my 7970m actually has auto fan control AND hdmi out :O I never bothered testing the hdmi cause I thought well fans are working so hdmi is probably not but that's not the case. I upgraded my m17 r2 with a card from eurocom last summer :p Must be one of the lucky 7970m owners in this case ;)

Did you play any intensive 3D games or use any applications that stress the GPU such as 3DMark11 or the new 3DMark? Games such as Crysis 2/3, Farcry 3 for extended amount of time? Reason I ask is from my understanding the fans do work in the Dell version of the card but are stuck at a low RPM. If they do work and ramp up on load you are incredibly lucky! :D

What colour was your PCB of the 7970M you received? Did you perhaps take any photo's of it before the install?

Ofcourse the first thing I did was stress the GPU :D The fans aren't stuck on any speed, they start low and kick in harder the more stress the GPU goes through. The PCB of my card is blue. I did indeed take photos before the install. See below :)

    Awesome :)

If I'm not mistaken that looks like a Clevo card. I wonder if the BIOS you have is different from the others? What CPU do you have in your machine?

Upgraded to i7 920xm last summer aswell. My bios is A10 if I recall correctly. And I'm using RJ Tech vbios. I don't know if its a Clevo card or not but I don't recall people posting pictures of a blue PCB card in an m17r2 thread at least. :p Not sure..
