nope, you should be good to go. no need to change heatsink (nor can you in the M17x R2), the bracket refers to the backplate on the back of the card that allows the screws to mate and apply pressure to the die.

Alright so the card does have an X bracket attached already. So I just remove all current gpu drivers, shutdown, remove battery and proceed to unhooking old card and using the heatsink to mount new card in its place. I would then boot and make sure to update drivers from ATI website. Is that correct?

yep. Just be aware, your existing screws in the heatsink may not be making adequate pressure to the die since the screws are weird. Keep an eye on temps.

Alright Got it installed but it boots to login and before loading windows it reboots. If I enter bios it also restarts after a few seconds. Any ideas? My first thought was his power brick wasnt strong enough so I used my 240watt but it still does the same. Nothing too crazy it just loads and as soon as I enter login password and it tries to enter windows it reboots!! Also, haven't had the chance to install drivers for 7970m due to it!

very strange, never had anything like that before. make sure you are on the latest bios (a10) and that you have wiped any and all graphics drivers from the past (use DDU)

Heatsink wasnt in contact with GPU all the way. Reseated and it works. 40 deg c idle. Will update with more test. Tried fortnite and it runs waay better even with a few settings on epic at 1280 x 900 resolution

Awesome, I’m getting 45-65 FPS playing doom maxed out at 1920x1200 using vulkan api so not bad at all for such an old computer

The bracket from the 5870 should work, i think (you can check clearances by fitting the card to the heatsink outside the laptop).
EDIT: didn't notice raidriar's posts looks like you're good to go, congrats
