Hey guys, with my 7970m in my computer I have been running into some problems with the heat. So I had it reach 98 degrees celc today. however I assume it hit that only once because every time I alt tab out of my game its at 82 I did a re-paste with some arctic silver ceramique. but that max temp is kind of freaking me out. Does any of you guys have this? my fan kicks int to 100% after about 70-80 degrees. My idle temp on it is about 39 degrees. Its blowing out hot air but maybe i put too much or to little? I dont know, anyone familiar with 7970m temps in the r2?

There is clearly something wrong. I got an Dell 7970m so it shut down at 85 °,you got an clevo version?

Mine with stock vbios nevers go above 75 ° with valley benchmark from uningine , never go above 70 ° with 0.975V vbios. And my thermal paste is mainstream , noctua nh t1. I had some problems with the screw at the begining , so i put the o clips before heatsink mount. Wasn't enought to provide an good pressur so i have ad some washer betwen o clips and heatsink. It put a lot more pressure on die but i don't recommand it if you don't know what you are doing ( cracking the gpu if to much pressure ). It had also put a little bend on my keyboard ...

Look after your Vrm and memory thermal pad , if they are too fat your heatsink will not have enought contact with the gpu die.

You overclocking? Temps are high. I run stock and my primary card idles around 34 to 36 haven't got to 98. I'd do a repaste what method did you use? The line or x method seems to work best with these cards

whats the ambient temperature in the room where the laptop is? i can push my 7970m over 1ghz during the winter when its cold, but during the summer time, i stick with stock clocks and voltage.

Ok so thank for confirming my worries. Turns out some of my thermal pads turned rock hard and were not doing there job. Im going to use copper shims and tim to fill the gap. Question though. The copper i got is pretty thin. If i were to stack one or two on top of each other and use just a dab of tim to prevent it from sliding would that work???

No its stock clock. My idel temps are normal .. aroubd 36-38 however under load it sky rockets. I think its my rma chips not my gpu chip that driving the temp.

So after using ceramique from AS the temps actually went up. and it capped out at 98 degrees. I quickly shut down the system, ordered some IC diamond and grabbed some copper plate. I then went to best buy were I found Antech formula 7 figured while I waited since I didn't have a computer at the moment I would try it. Threw some of that on my card and put the shims in with the formula 7 to keep it on my ram chips. After booting up I immediately noticed my idle temp was 2 degrees lower so I had hope. Popped in a game and cranked up the graphic to ultra on wow, then BF3, then wildstar. Looked at my MSI afterburner temp and the GPU now will not reach above 73 degrees. Lets just say I am a happy camper now.
