I've dialled mine back to 24 since I noticed my fps was going funny and realised I had hit that 95oC mark running at 25With TRL set to the norm of 24, it stays ~85oC. Oh well, nvm!
Although I did notice that when I hit the DTS button, that supposedly counts down to when throttling will take place, it indicated that 100oC was the throttle threshold, not 95oC![]()

Intel sets the thermal throttling temperature of these CPUs to 100C at the factory. Some laptop manufacturers set a lower temperature in the bios so your CPU or GPU will start to throttle sooner before the correct temperature is reached. Usually they are trying to protect some sub-standard component on the motherboard or perhaps just trying to protect a users lap.
Great to see you are having fun playing with ThrottleStop. When gaming, check off the Log File option if you want a very accurate record of what multiplier your CPU was using while playing as well as core temperature. It makes it easier to see when you have pushed your XM chip a little too far. Ultimately these CPUs in a laptop are heat limited so find a way to run your CPU cooler and you will be able to unlock some more performance. -
Thanks Uncle! -
Hi guys,
Issue with high 920xm temperature ....
I'm new user of Alienware (no sig done yet).
I had i7 620m before and decided to upgrade to 920mx.
I used NOCTULA thermal paste that my colleague have for his desktop i7 2600k quad core.
This paste have operational temperature upto 100 degree Celcius and right now I am thinking that the paste is the root cause of having so high core temperature for my 920xm (this paste is working in almost max operational temperature).
I have done couple of measurements and want to check with you lads if the temperatures I am getting are genuine.
Idle:
CPU average 37Watt, 68-70C (no OC)
Prime95:
CPU average 70Watt 90-94C (no OC)
Prime95:
CPU average 75-80Watt 96-99C (OC 5%) - prime crashed after 30min
Are these temps normal or to high?
Should I consider to re-paste the CPU with e.g. ArcticSilver5?
Sorry for bugs in this post, English is not my native language.
Thanks for reply ..... -
I just installed a new 920XM as well. I used IC Diamond 24 Carat thermal paste, which I've heard a few people state is good for high temps.
ANYWAY - I think your temps are a lil on the high side. At idle my HWiNFO reports that my CPU runs @ <20W and <45oC. When I run the ThrottleStop 1024M bench, HWiNFO reports 85W and a temp that hits up to 95oC
>>> amazingly (or maybe not so), when I lifted the lappy off the book I'm using to prop it up, the temps during the TS bench fell by 15oC!!! and the multipliers went back up to a solid 24!
>>> I think investing in a lappy cooler may be a good way to go for both of us! But clearly at idle your temps are still significantly higher than mine, so I think repasting your CPU with a decent thermal paste may be a good way to start.
I hope that's been helpful. I'm sure some of the more seasoned NBR'ers will be along soon enough to advise you better. Good luck brother! -
Thanks wonderpookie ....
I think you are right by saying when lifting the laptop, the temperature is getting a bit down.
I think with extra cooling system I will take on hold until 7970 situation is cleared.
Right now plan is to order IC7 Diamond paste and try to get the temperature sorted in "normal" way.
Would be nice to get someone else advise to confirm that my temperatures are to high. Even from curiosity point of view ....
Thanks .. -
Just a tiny word of "warning"... I didn't realise before I had applied ICD24 that when you remove the stuff, for re-pasting, that it can leave scratches on your heatsink and CPU (diamond dust is hard apparently!). I found some forums where users were posting all sorts of images of totally scratched up surfaces.
When I removed ICD24 from my 840QM before sticking in the 920XM, although I too found scratches left behind (I used Artic Clean to get rid of the stuff), they were no way near as bad as some ppl were making out. And the scratches don't affect anything I've been told anyway, so it's only an aesthetic thing, but something to be aware of I suppose.
ALSO - I received an email from the President of Innovation Cooling regarding the best way to apply ICD to the rectangular shape of our netbook i7's. As opposed to a 5mm blob in the centre as advised on their website, he suggested a line, 3/4 of the length of the CPU, running down the centre as the best method of application. He said they'd have YouTube videos up soon. -
I'd also like to note that the 920XM also uses a higher stock voltage which results in higher overall power consumption.
Also one thing to be aware of is that the CPU fan also may affect what the monitoring software says about the CPU wattage. Remember, these are powerful fans and they might draw 10w themselves since they have to flush out that hot air and fast.My 920XM only reads 80-85w when I overclock it to 3.33GHz and am running Vantage with the PhysX portion currently being tested. The highest it gets to at stock is around 60w... but then again, the highest recorded temperature I get with my CPU is 83*C on the hottest core when I'm gaming.
I've got the Cooler master U3 and it WORKS. The three fans truly do make a difference with how much air these blower fans require... o.o It's craziness I tell ya... -
Thanks for the input brother! -
Guys, can I use ThrottleStop AND the modded A10 bios with a 5% OC for even bigger gains?
noob Q... that 5% OC is to the bus? -
I think the 5% OC also increases the core voltage which increases heat. Most users get better overall results by playing with the multiplier and TDP/TDC settings while leaving the base clock at its default setting.
Every laptop is unique so the best thing to do is to run some benchmarks and see what works best for your laptop. -

Yeah, I don't think I'll be touching that BIOS OC option again. ThrottleStop alone is more than win enough! -
920XM + Throttlestop is FTW
I'm still playing a relatively old MMORPG called Anarchy Online. Love being able to 8 log chars all at the same time, without any noticeable drop in performance. -
once?
-
I tend to play during times when the population ingame is a bit low, so if nothing's happening, I do raids by myself. -
(had 4 accounts and after 2 months of sleeping-eating-gaming daycycles(with a day-off sometimes) I sold 3 of them for a total of €750 and kept the 4th for my own.3 accounts*€15= €45/month * 2= €90 subscription costs and 3*€30 of cd-keys so a total of €180 so make the difference
. If my hardware back then was any decent i could've played 8 chars at the same time or more but ey, can't complain ^^
Too bad it ruined some of my social life or I wouldn't do anything else to make lots of money. [/Off-topic]
on topic:
Ordered an i7 920xm from laptopmonkey about a week ago, can't wait to test it. (coming from a 720qm but i feel its bottlenecking in certain games, specially mmorpg's which will be very cpu demanding anyday)
I suppose there is no kind of modification available to boost the cooling alot? (talking about H²0...). Or I could start of buying that coolermaster U3 with the mountable fans?! Sometimes when playing, suddenly the game's fps drops by lets say 3/4th so 60fps->15fps. I suppose its the 720qm getting to hot and going in power saving mode or something. Or it may be the 5870's. for some reason sisoft sandra doesnt want to start so i could check the temps.. -
>>> I sometimes miss WoW and the BGs, before I'm reminded how much abuse certain members of the community directed my way and how hard it is organising tennagers to turn up and play at certain hours of the day - being a Guild Leader sucks, yo. That, and I /shudder when I remember I paid £8-99 a month for 3 whole years!
>>> the few stutters I have now in some games I can contribute directly to a drop in CPU core clocks when the default 62W TDP is hit - these stutters go away when the TDP is increased to 80W and all cores remain running at max turbo clocks at all the time.
>>> the 920XM is easily hitting it's 95oC roof now and the clocks falling from the max turbo
>>> I'm optimistic the U3 will help reduce temps significantly as I noticed that just lifting the lappy off the textbook I'm using to prop it off the table (for ease of use - I'm 6-4) dropped temps from the 90-95oC they were hitting during the TS bench to an astonishingly low 75oC! I doubt I'll get quite as awesome results in this heat wave, but most games don't tax all cpres@100% for extended periods as the TS bench does, so I'm hopeful the U3 will drop temps enough to keep from hitting the 95oC roof.
Use HWiNFO64 to monitor your temps - it's a godsend as far as I'm concerned, and I am eternally grateful for the Alienware NBR community for turning me on to it. I've spent many a night examining the gaming logs from it! I even have it set to start with my Windows boot and display certain readings on my Logitech G13 gamepad's LCD screen - I am addicted!
>>> but ahem, point being it's great and you should defo try to use that to monitor temps, clocks etc.
Keep us posted on how your upgrade goes! I love my 920XM with a passion - and I also bought from the LappyMonkey guys who provided a great service - reminds me, I should leave feedback! -
It really is a beast. Most of my work colleagues don't even believe that my laptop has dual SLI graphics cards in it, let alone when I tell them that the 920XM EE cpu turbos up fully on all 4 cores at the same time
My next upgrade will be to 16gb of RAM...just cos I want that much!
