Yes, I realize that there is a recent thread about a F310J battery-need from someone in the EU. Although I need to bring new life to my M17xR2 also, the reason for this new thread is because I'm not in the EU and I am not specifically looking for the F310J / W075J. I'm looking for an alternative.
Up until two weeks ago, Dell actually sold the F310J (W075J) online. Supposedly, it was new - it came with a one-year warranty. But at $150, I decided to wait for my $185 Dell eGift card, which I got today. Alas, I go to Dell today and the battery is no longer there!
First question: Has anyone tried using the C0C5M on the M17x R2? I ask because it only lists the M17x, M17x R3, and M17x R4 under compatibility. I find it odd that it will work with three iterations of the M17x but not the R2...
I checked out the various eBay offerings. When you look at the pictures, you can see a date (YYYY.MM) next to the Q/bar code. Bottom line: none of them will be "brand new" because, per Battery University, even if they have not been used, sitting on a shelf reduces the battery life. Thus, I'm willing to entertain a non-OEM battery provided it was manufactured recently. I do not know of any good aftermarket battery vendors.
Second question: Has anyone used a good aftermarket battery for the M17x R2 or does anyone know of a good aftermarket manufacturer of M17x R2 compatible batteries?
Thanks for reading and for your responses.

This is a shameless bump.
Has anyone successfully used the M17x, M17x R3 or M17x R4 battery on a M17x R2? -

Wow, thanks for your reply Alienware-Natalia_J! And from a Company Representative, no less! I feel special - no joke!
I have some followup questions:
1. So, just to confirm, Dell P/N: C0C5M is not officially supported but works on the M17x R2, right?
2. Also, if I order the C0C5M battery directly from Dell, will I be getting a battery that has been manufactured within the last few months or will it be inventory that is a few years old?
3. Do you have any insights as to why C0C5m officially works with three models of the M17x but not officially with the M17x R2?
4. Do you have any insights as to why F310J would be available up to two weeks ago but is no longer available now? Is it because there is no more inventory or it is not being manufactured any longer?
Thanks again for your time and attention to this! Your response made my day! -

You are welcome hohum, we are here to help.
So, to answer your questions:
1. The battery of the Alienware M17x r1, P/N: C852J or W075J work fine for the M17x r2 but are not officially supported.
2. I have no information on that.
3. The battery of the M17x r1 and r2 is practically the same part so it'll work fine on both models, but not for the M17x r3 or r4, which are completely different.
4. I will check on that and get back to you ASAP -
Hello Natalia_J,
Thank you for your response to my questions. I don't know if I was clear with questions. I was asking about the C0C5M - not the C852J. I never mentioned the C852J.
I searched for a battery on Dell's website and the closest one I could come up with is C0C5M or Dell PN 318-0397. Again, this battery is listed as compatible for R1, R3 and R4 - but not R2...
Could you please (quickly) confirm whether C0C5M (318-0397) will work with Alienware M17x R2? I would like to order one as quickly as possible before this battery disappears too!
If you state that the R1 and R2 are similar (your answer to #3), then why is the R1 listed as being compatible in the Overview tab of a battery that works for, supposedly, the R3 and R4?
Finally, if C0C5M (318-0397) is not compatible with R2, then could you point me to where I could find genuine F310J, W075J or C852J with one year warranty? -
The website is wrong. The C0C5M will work with the M17x R1 & The M17x R2 but NOT the M17xR3 & M17xR4. Go ahead and order it for your R2. It'll work just fine

I find it curious that the Tech Specs tab for the C0C5M specifically states, " Designed For Alienware M17xR3" - not that a corporation's website is 100% accurate 100% of the time...
I'm also curious, design-wise, what makes the M17xR3/M17xR4 battery so dissimilar to the M17xR1/M17xR2? Do you happen to know this fact?
Again, any insight into this matter will be greatly appreciated! -
My apologies OP. I retract my statement about them being the same. The picture on Dell's website is absolutely wrong. The one way you can tell if the battery is for the M17x R2 is by looking for the rubber feet on the battery itself. The M17x R3 & R4 ones do NOT have those feet. Added to that, the onboard battery indicator on the ones for the R3 & R4 are rectangular & the ones on the R2 are strictly dots.
Source; I personally owned the M17x R2 and the R4
Apologies for the confusion. You stated the right part number but the dell website shows the picture of another battery altogether. -
I noticed you wrote "owned" in the past tense, but if you happen to still have them, do you mind taking some detailed pictures of both batteries for me please? I'd love to see the difference.
So, to confirm, your R4 uses the C0C5M battery, which does NOT work on the R2, right?
Assuming so, this still leaves the nagging question - why does Dell list the C0C5M battery to be compatible with the R1 (but not R2)?? -
Okay, this will be my last comment on this thread, unless someone else actually responds.
I am looking for a battery for my M17xR2. I do not want to buy used. I do not want to buy a product without a warranty. Anyone know of a decent after-market or OEM source for batteries that have the M17xR2 battery in stock?
Please? -
