My M17x R2 fans have been replaced once already due to grinding noise. Now the right-side GPU fan is making the same noise again, but this time my warranty is out.
The phone rep quoted me an absolutely ridiculous price of $70+ per fan if I wanted to buy replacements. One more year of warranty was $350+. If you ask me, I think there's got to be a cheaper way to fix an issue with what are really very cheap, simple parts.
Tell me if I'm crazy: why not just get some high-speed desktop fans and cannibalize them? Take out the motor/fan parts and stick 'em in the M17x's plastic fan casings? Cheaper parts (maybe $10 per fan) and higher RPM's. Has anyone done this before?

That would definitely be a project. If you could get a higher CFM fan to fit in there and run off of the same power requirement, you could probably make some cash from a lot of the forum members around here. I know I would be very interested.

already went though the same issue with the fans. sadly there is no real option other than to get the fans from ebay or dell. ebay usually costs a few bucks less

You should look after some videocard fan if you intend to do a mod like this. The common Desktop fan doesn't have the proper blade design to work with a laptop heatsink system.

This is also true. The fan blades are more like paddles, and have no curvature to them.
