Yes, a 12.5mm HDD will fit in the 2nd HDD bay, but NOT the first. And even to do that, you'll have to remove a tiny little piece of metal near the bay. This has been discussed pretty heavily already over here: 12.5mm Drive in M17x. This site pretty much has the worst search function ever though.

I just did it as well, and can verify the drive works fine and doesn't do anything funny. I didn't know there was a 1.5TB drive though.

EDIT: There is no way that's a 12.5mm drive man.

Here's the eBay drive compared to the 1TB Samsung I own from Newegg. I wouldn't buy that drive if I were you. Looks like that badboy has two extra platters or something hiding in there! :D

    That's a 14,8 mm ( 0.583 Inches) 2.5" HDD ;)
Not sure if it'll fit the m17x with the caddy.
A good idea would be to use longer screws probably.
If i find it cheap enough i'll buy it and test it.

Don't bother Katalin. It won't fit. The 12.5mm thick drive myself and a few others have is almost too thick. The SATA adapter (interposer?) barely engages the laptop's connector as it is. Now, would this fit in the caddy that DR650 has that replaced his optical drive? That's what I really want to know.

Turbod i know,i was actually the one you repped for confirming this before you tried :p

My guess is that it will fit,as the connector is at the same height as the 12,5mm the rest up to 14,8mm is on the top of the drive.

Oh, thanks man! Heh heh. I was just saying that the 12.5mm barely fits, so that 1.5TB beast won't get powered on. I didn't want you to buy that $200 drive and have a paperweight.

Wow! Thanks =] I knew the thing looked FAT, wasn't sure if it was just cause I'm used to the standard 2.5" drives.

I'll go with the 1tb by samsung (don't like WD).

    Thanks! =]

Bear in mind that there is a caddy that replaces your optical drive, and that monster may fit in there. I use my optical once in a blue moon, but I'm not willing to get rid of 'er just yet.

Yeah I've read about the optical replacement.

I rarely use my optical, but its still helpful once in a while.

I'm not a big gamer, maybe 20gigs worth? Some anime/music/videos thats it. So the 500-1000gb 2nd hdd should be more than enough for a while =D I just like to go as big as possible to deter the need for an upgrade in the future =] haha

No matter how big my hard drive is, I manage to fill it up with more crap. Then I've also got a USB hard drive that is always the same size as my secondary hard drive, for redundancy. Basically, I need to quit messing around with hard drives and start gaming more. :D

yes it will (it's a 12,5mm HDD) if you remove the little piece of chassis/bent a little the caddy.
Have a look HERE , HERE and HERE.

What a waste of my time. Buy a new SSD, upload everything to it from my old laptop, don't even get to install it and my brand new laptop doesn't work. Friggen fantastic ><

Asking for a complete refund now, its a joke, you don't spend $3,500 on a laptop to have it fail 3 days later =/

Thanks for the advice here though =] I'll end up giving this SSD to my brother for his lappy =/

Brand new M17x R2, I7-740QM, 8GB RAM, Blu ray drive, RGB LED, Dual ATI 5870's and standard it had 1tb RAID 0 setup.

Was raging hard when I wrote that other message, so frustrating, I'm just glad I never actually got to migrating anything over to the laptop.

My brothers M15 should benefit nicely from the upgrade though, so in that regard at least its not a wasted part =D Sucks he's not gonna pay me =P haha

If it's brand new, you should have a warranty. If it hasn't been 21 days (US), you can return it.

Yeah I've called them up and asked for a complete refund entirely.

Seems to me like the M17x's I'm getting are just plagued. I might look at upgrading to the M18x when its released, else I'll just stick to the Sony Z. I know they're not as good spec wise, but at least they're reliable =D
