Specs:
GPUs: Ati 4850m x2 in crossfire config
CPU: i7 x920@ 2GHz
BIOS: A09 1.00
Issue;
GPU's are operating at high temperatures even while "idle" and the fans on the GPUs's themselves seem to be hardly causing any air flow through the system. At the moment with jsut 1 eve client open with graphics set to medium (a travesty in itself) Trixx is reporting a temp 93 degrees Celsius. The only way I can even play SC2 at the moment is to change the native resolution down to 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200![]()
After having a similar issue around October last year dell sent out a service technician who replaced both of the GPU's and the motherboard. But apparently Im 3-4 months out of warranty now and dell refuses to help at all. I'm sitting here flustered and frustrated at having an extremely expensive system that is operating as nothing more than an internet browsing machine.
If anyone can help provide some info I would be forever grateful

If your warranty expired you have 3 options left.
1st option.....well maybe your heatspreaders have too much dust on them ?
compressed air for 5$ should solve it.
2nd option. You have to watch this
M17x Teardown Video1 of 2 **READ SAFETY PRECAUTIONS PRIOR TO REPLACING PARTS** (Official Video) - YouTube
and this
Alienware M17x Teardown & Cooling Modification | Tech|Inferno
buy thermal paste, MX-4 or whatever you like
Buy thermal pads EK Thermal Pad Sheet - 160mm x 155mm x 1mm - FrozenCPU.com
and do repaste on your own, this will lover the temps.
3rd option
Go to computer store and ask for help. They will help you with a smile but you will be >100$ short after that. -
Thanks for the info, I've already read that and though and I doubt the issue has anything to do with the thermal paste as it has already been replaced within the last 4-5 months. And Im quite apprehencive to open the laptop up myself in fear that they do decide they will do something and then low and behold they instantly reverse the decision when they find out I've tampered with the internals myself.
My suspicion lies more with the fans on the GPU's themselves or they are getting a lack of power from the moBo.
If I have the same issue that was "fixed" less than 6 months ago, should it not still be covered.
This is an issue I'm more than willing to take up with the ombudsman here in Australia as I honestly cant use my laptop for anything other than internet browsing and playing flash games at the moment. And I didn't pay $5000+ for that. -
You are only covered within the warranty period my friend. If you can, double check all the internal parts and heatpipes just to make sure everything is ok. If yes, then maybe like you said....something with mobo maybe. If you could get a multimeter and check VDC on gpu fans it would be nice.
Or reflash the bios to A10...maybe it would help ?
Try everything, maybe you find what's wrong.
