My point is that there is a solution that was overlooked. I'm not arguing that putting 980M SLI into this 10 year old combo heater and factorial electricity bill increaser would be a dream machine for ages. But knowing this it may expand the list of possibilities for it. It still is a gorgeous machine, and not being limited to CF 7970/8970 with its brightness issues and sometimes support, like the shown in that example Quadro cards or something else that reduces heat means a lot. I've seen M4000Ms with SLI connectors, if I ever find them again it might be a way to test it with even greater potential. M15X with just one Quadro is a decent setup, M17X with two can be a thing to behold, especially if one switches PhysX support to GPU it can handle more than we thought.

You are going to have to give up the one thing that made M17x R2 so nice: the RGBLED WUXGA display. For me, that is a dealbreaker.

Still waiting for my 8970m to arrive.
I feel it should arrive in the next week.
Can't wait to install.
Happy days to everyone.

@MrMogwai did you make test with maxwell 2.0 quadro (m1200, m2200, m3000m, m4000m, m5000m) on rgbled display?
-
Not yet. Got a spare M3000M lying around, but got no time recently to do any tweaking
-
simple plug in play should rule out maxwell 2.0 quadro compatibility with 8 bit panels. Your alienhead bios logo will appear messed up right off the bat. There was some debate in the past as to whether or not the upper tier quadros supported 8 bit or not, it was never concluded.

Very interesting results now I am wondering if the board is capable of bootting newer cards from the pascal and lower end RTX cards. By the way the one m17x r2 that I recently fixed does has an EDP connector which was bit of a surprise when I first got it.

Should post a picture

Installed a firepro s7100x with the RGB and got black screen with windows booting in background, for the uninitiated it is the 8GB version of the R9 m390x or the more common firepro w7170m. I only got the card to upgrade a Precision m6600 that is infamous for being gimped mxm wise and may have bricked the board like another user who tried almost the same card in an M15x.
Mounting wise the stock x bracket works and the whole thing fits like a glove without effort. -
So no internal display? Did you test other vBIOS?

How much did you purchase the card for? -
Not going to try as the card didn't work in my m18x r2 either so sending it back. I suspect something was changed between this card and the previous models as it is an HP card.

Thank you for testing, I was always curious about this card. It is a server card after all, it may not have LVDS output wired on it even if the core supports it

And after install did you re enable sound in bios?
-
How much of a furnace is it with this machine? Glad that it works as such does confirm that this gen of Kepler works.
-
We need to confirm onboard audio works as well as native fan control
-
I'm anxiously awaiting what you all find out. I'm planning on converting an R1 to R2 soon. It currently has 5870m in crossfire. I was planning to do 8970m in Crossfire, but may wait now :O
Off topic, but is the CFX cable the same for the 8970m and which 8970m is it? Will something like this work? -
The Crossfire cable is the same, and the card should work. However as it is green it is most likely a Dell distribution, so some issues may emerge.
-
You will not have proper fan control with that card. Only Clevo 8970M will give proper fan control without hwinfo. I found hwinfo to be unreliable which is why I always choose cards with native fan support
Another FYI: 880M will work but only with onboard audio disabled and it will require HWinfo to operate the fans. Not worth such compromises, but some may opt for this option.
