Hi peeps I just saw this on the aussie dell website.

    17.0" UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1920x1200) RGBLED Display with TrueLife™ [add $73.70 or $1/week-1]

UltraSharp? Well Dell is known for misadvertising. 4870M GDDR5, 285M GTX, i7 740QM on US site... I would not count too much on that :D

This means nothing. Can you imagine US still does not have the x40 CPUs. I don't see the screen option you mention on Dell.com. I imagine it won't come for many many months.

I really wonder why Dell is now forgetting US consumers, it's so unfair knowing that most of M17X are sold in the USA.

The Blueray Burner is not available on the US website right now, Dell does seem to be alittle laggy on items sometimes.

Why, Dell, why!? My M17X will hopefully ship out this week and now this.

Screw it, I'm not going to cave in. I'll just buy a nice monitor instead! Who knows when this will even be available in the USA anyway.

Anyone know what the difference is between truelife and the normal display? I'm guessing it's just the glossy coating.

The TrueLife™ brand is Dell's marketing name for its new anti-reflective LCD screen technology (anti-reflective technology). TrueLife™ is a trademark owned by Dell, Inc.

This new anti-reflective technology has sharper contrast (the difference between the deepest black and lightest white pixels), produces clearer and more colorful images, absorbs most external ambient light and has wider viewing angles than traditional notebook screens.

    Information on TrueLife

    It's a great screen...

In the past Dell described their glossy panels as "Truelife" so maybe the standard RGB LED on the australian website is now a matte finish? If that's the case, Aikimox will be ecstatic.

So I assume this is the same RGB panel that is used on the Precision m6500?

Edit: I think it is the same screen as the m6500. Dell.com shows the m6500 comes with 17" UltraSharp™ WideScreen WUXGA RGB LED Edge2Edge Covet Display

Yeah it's a glossy coating, same as what we have now. I guess their default offering in Australia may be matte with glossy being an added extra.

    Hi Joker,

I believe both screens are glossy. I just received my new system a few days ago here in AUS. I can't believe this new screen is out now LOL eheheheh. It's also only a $73.70 dollar upgrade. The screen I have now is very nice. I think it should be the same as yours and all the other R2 LED RGB screen owners. Its the one with the glass finish.

I'm not to sure what all the Ultrasharp stuff is about. I had a truelife screen last time with the XPS M1730 and that was quite a nice screen although this being coupled with the RGB LED should be much nicer. Hmmmmssss i wonder if it will be much better than our current screens.

I think I will contact dell about it sometime tomorrow and see if I am able to get it.
    I want it eheheheheh.
    Cheers.

I think Joker is right on this. It's just specific to Australia. The screen we already have on the M17X is what they offer under Truelife there. It may just be some marketing effort out of Australia.

My RGB LED is in fact glossy, same as the US ones (this is the default choice).

I have spent many years comparing AUS dell to US dell, and it looks as if Australia (being smaller and being more willing to pay more cos we are weak) gets the higher end/newer stuff first, in most cases.

Also, we dont get as much customization for our models, as they usually come with most of the higher end options pre-chosen for us (screens, HDDs, etc).

I think this is perhaps in part to use our smaller population as a testing ground? either way, the dell RGB LED screen that comes as default in Australia is identical to the RGB LED in USA.
Thus, the new screen is almost definately the one from the M6500.

You guys in USA should see it trickle through in a couple months.

    Hey Ash,

I too am from the AUS. I just received my system a few days ago and I was just wondering if I could get that new screen.
So I contacted the Dell rep whom which I had placed my original order with.
Apparently she tells me that my system already was shipped with the new "17.0" UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1920x1200) RGBLED Display with TrueLife™".
However in the part listing quotation for the order it only quotes the other older screen. ?????????

Is there a way I could tell between the older model screen and this supposed new Ultrasharp truelife screen?
Whats you model number for your screen? Hwinfo32 I think should tell info about the model or something.

I just wanted to know if I could return my machine and get it exchanged for a new one which included the newer screen. However she claims I already have the newer screen, so I'm not to sure if that is true. I would like to check and see somehow.

    Cheers.

Yep sure things. Will do. Read above I just contacted Dell about my screen and apparently they tell me that I already have the new Ultrasharp Truelife screen.

Was just wondering if you could tell us the model number or something of your screen. I want to try and compare or see if I can tell the difference. Not sure if shes right, perhaps. Just thought I'd try and check it out anyways.
Maybe Brian might know something. Hmmmsssss.

    Cheers.

@ reborn 2003: I can almost guarantee the salesperson had NFI what you were on about.

I dont think HWinfo32 is capable of finding out the exact model number of the display. If I recall the only way to find out would be to open up the machine.

Unless you paid extra, you got the standard 1920x200 rgbled.

IMO, they are all just marketing name. Look at the M17x and XPS 16 models in Dell Malaysia Website, they're up for a couple of weeks and yet no one noticed it. My bet is, they are using the same panel as before but added an extra trademark so that the consumer would think it's somehow related to their famous Ultrasharp monitors.

P.S Because there's no way they are offering IPS panels in there right? :)

Yep, I'm gonna have to agree with you there on the 1st point. I'm pretty sure I have the standard old screen as well. I didn't pay extra as the new screen only just showed up on the dell page like yesterday or something and a few days ago with standard 8GB ram now. My goodness DELL lol. ehahahahah

So opening up my monitor you say. Hmmsss What will I be looking for exactly? I noticed in a few screen threads from before that people were quoting new model numbers in HWinfo 32. Was just wondering what model number showed up for yours. Just so I have a point of reference to start from. eheheh thanks.
I might give dell a call again.

    Cheers.

There's not a snowballs chance in hell that they would put an IPS panel on a gaming laptop. That would be ridiculous in so, so many ways.

TrueLife is Dell's fancy name for anti-reflective coating. So is there a new matte screen? Yes and no, apparently. TrueLife simulates matte screens without the horrible contrast ratio. There is still a fair bit of reflection to it, though.

I'd personally stay with the glossy screen. Gamers don't leave dark areas, anyways! It's bad for our skin!

Okay so dell just rang me a couple of times. Turns out they saw my email requesting a new screen or something and decided to give me a ring instead. Called me twice. However it was weird cause the guy was calling from the US. LOL. Anyways how nice of them to call me for a change.

So after a lengthy chat with a couple of Dell reps it turns out I do have the new Ultrasharp Truelife screen. Didn't even know it. hmmmssss.

    Hi theres,

Hmmsss lets see. Glossy. I think it is. Not too sure. It does have like a glass sheet or something on it. All I know is that it leaves my R1's screen for dead LOL. It is like so sooo soooo much brighter and vibrant. However I think all the LED's already look really bright and vibrant.

Where can I find the specs and info about the screen?
I'll post it up when I can find it.
    Cheers.

It's the same old Samsung we all have. To get more detailed information, download and run this program: http://www.astra32.com/files/astra32setup.exe Go to monitors and see what the monitor model is listed as. Mine is K1NFP170CT (SEC5443). It seems to me that for NEW orders, the default display for Australia will not have the truelife coating on it. I'm guessing what they started doing now is offering a lower quality coating as default and the glossy display we all have now will be the premium truelife one.

The easiest way to know if you have a TrueLife display or the same one everyone else has is to sit in front of it when it's off - the one we all have is basically a freaking mirror.

The TrueLife one will look smudgy and... well, for lack of a better word, matte. Like most LCD TVs and monitors.

The truelife screens are glossy as well. I used to own a few dells with truelife and they were all glossy as well. I don't think dell offer any matte screen finishes on their home end user lines anymore. Perhaps on the business line there maybe some matte screen notebooks.

What info does your monitor say in Astra32 Akari? Thanks.

    Cheers.

Your panel model is 1 year newer than mine. Mine was manufactured first in Jan 2009. I think that's really the biggest difference and why they changed the monitor id around.
