Hey guys I just bought an alienware off of the outlet store. Well there were some problems. (They shipped me the wrong charger with the laptop) but everything seemed settled out in a couple of days. Now when I actually turned on my laptop for the first time yesterday I was welcomed with this little OSD message. "Connect supported AC Adapter for optimal operation". Great! I have tried 3 different alienware chargers and all of them get the same notification. I know something is up because my alienware m15x out performs this laptop. The M15x has a worse processor and a GTX 260M. This has a i7-820 and a 5870. Can anyone help me out? Is there anything I can do? Or should I call dell yet again.

Just in case you haven't checked - when you startup, can you see in the bios that the adaptor is being seen as a 240 watt (I know some folks have been getting 210 watt adaptors by mistake)

After startup - can you see that the 5870 is indeed enabled in the manage HW section?

    Your bios is A10 now?

You should try shut down you laptop, then remove the battery & unplug the charging cable. Then plug the charging cable and turn you laptop on see if its on? if it works , let it load to desktop screen and put you battery back.

For Performance Issues try check your stealth mode if its on ? Make sure its off.

I am not sure where you see this on the bios but my adapter does say 100-240V so I think its definitely the right one. Also It does say I have have the 5870 installed and it is enabled and updated to the latest catalyst.

    Xth:

Yes it is now A10 and the problem still occurs after shutting down my laptop and removing the battery. Stealth mode is off as well.

Maybe it is just me? I am getting around 30fps in Starcraft 2 with Very High settings and no AA or AF at 1440x900. That doesnt seem right when my M15x could pull AAx2 and AFx8 with 1920x1080 res and have about 45-50fps.

Also BF:BC2 gets around 40fps with the same settings :(

The 240 v you're referring to is Volts - NOT watts. You want to look on the power tab in the bios to make sure you've got the wattage you need for the the GPUs.

    I've attached a screen shot

Looks like you've got a bad or wrong adaptor. And with too little wattage capability - your Video gets throttled back. I'm not sure what system that wattage is for - but is sure isn't for an M17x R1 or R2!
Take a look on the AC adaptor itself. somewhere on it will say its rated wattage - then you'll now if it's bad or wrong.

    Good Luck

They tend to send the 150W one with the lower end models of the M17x, usually ones without the CFX/SLI options etc IIRC. Easily possible someone at Dell just wasn't paying attention.

Why would they do that though? stupid dell -_- first they send me the wrong charger and 2 EXTRA laptops without chargers and then once I called them to ask for a replacement they sent me a wrong voltage one..now I got it fixed and they are sending a new motherboard and a new adapter tomorrow :)

Hey guys I have had some problems with my Alienware m17x r2 and dell has sent out a new motherboard, touch strip, and power adapter. They said they shipped it to the local dell technician here. Has anyone here dealt with one of these people? How long did it take for them to contact you? I have been waiting three days since the items have arrived and still no call from this technician. Thanks guys.

I have had one experience with a tech sent by Dell. He did a fine job with my computer. The techs are actually just contracted by Dell, so it is really hit or miss whether or not you get a good one. But if the tech causes any damage to your system, Dell is responsible to fix it. Thoroughly check your laptop for functionality and physical condition before the tech leaves, and if anything isn't right, have the tech call Dell on the spot.

Three days seems a bit long, I would call Dell and have them follow up with the technician. If I recall correctly, the service ticket only stays open for 5 days, and if the repair isn't scheduled, the parts are sent back to Dell.

Well I contacted them and apparently they had the wrong phone number on record and he was calling the wrong number -_-. He is supposed to contact me tomorrow to set up an appointment, but apparently its against dell policy to have techs come on college campus? What??? Who knows how I will get this thing fixed. As for the problem, I ask one questions:

My computer is currently being supplied with 150watts of power and it performs at optimal efficiency at 240watts.

Will my FPS in games/performance in general improve? If so how much? Thanks guys, I love you all :)

If your system has dual GPUs then you need the 240. If your system has a single GPU only, then the 240 is not required. Since they are dispatching out a new PSU along with the motherboard, dont worry about it. Once everything is back together, head over to the benchmarking thread and post some benchmarks. I'm sure everything will be fine.

Merging with your last thread - no need for another. ;)

well it is kind of laggy compared to a 260GTX.....im pretttyyy positive the 5870 should blow that out of the water. Also it lags for 2-6 seconds pretty much everytime i play a game.
