Hi i just recently acquired an Alienware M17x R2 i7 quadcore 820 and tow ATI HD4870 cards running in crossfire. I run 58-60 FPS normally in WoW with mostly max setting. But in Battlegrounds as soon as we fight it drops to 9fps, and in cities it runs good but every 30-45 seconds it spikes down to 9-11fps it frustrating to say the least. Ive tried with crossfire disabled. Computer is not in stealth mode. And alos the latency is pretty horrible i mean 300ms all the time. My Dell studio 1745 laptop runs wow better than this thing. Please help!!

Try disabling shadows or setting them to a minimum.
What's your driver version?
How are your temperatures? -
shadows i always have turned to minimum. and ive tried other settings at lower also. Ummm driver version good question. I just downloaded the latest drivers from dells website last night.
-
I think dells drivers are almost a year old or something. And I dont think WoW utilizes crossfire yet.
-
Yeah wow doesnt utilize CF really. Hmm maybe ill get the newer driver then. But i have tried it without CF running and its the same thing.
-
I,am running 60 fps in all areas except WG then drops to 40+ in Dalaran 30 flat that is with all settings Maxed
You should be running better than that, try start type msconfig enter and turn off any programs running on start up you can live with out you want your cpu free. -
Your a lucky man. Lol i turned Vsync off and im getting 75-100 now... but i still get these crazy spikes down to 12ish
-
Can't help with CF issue (works sort of OK on 5870s CF), but for latency check this:
World of Warcraft (en) Forums -> Latency fix!! - 400ms to 60!
For me it dropped from 500-600ms to 180ms. -
Hmm i dont knoe anything about that mess so ill leave it alone haha. Just want these huge lagspikes to go away
-
I had the same issue on a differnt game. What fix it was changing from Cable internet to Dsl connection Alot of people would go cable internet is better but it all comes down to the Internet provider. Remember your playing a MMORPG not a single player game.
-
Yeah its not my net. Because like i said my Dell Studio 1745 laptop runs it without any troubles at all
-
Ooops Double post
-
Soo, when i got my R2 it kept crashing in wow (yes wow) the second i turned on MAX settings. after a couple restarts and some driver reinstallation it stopped. I was getting around 50-60 FPS and 40-50 in cities and BG's.
After i turned Vsync off and altered some numbers that effected how the game uses the cpu cores in a file i cant rememer the name of, im running at a stable 230 FPS outside cities/in cities when there is not much traffic and around 80-150 in BG/raids - latency 100-180ms. -
Must be nice. Idk i Think im going to reformat fresh and start all over see if maybe i messed something up.

In the WoW folder, open the file named config.. Using notepad, edit the processAffinityMask parameter so that it reads processAffinityMask "15", then save the file. This will allow WoW to use more than 1 CPU core next time you start up the program.
-
With my system which can see in my signature, I run steady 60 FPS in raid. The FPS is limited by the vsync.
In WOW the only option I have on low-medium are the shadows everything else is at max. -
I went through the whole config file and didnt see affinitymask
-
My bad; I think you have to add it. It's been a long time since I've fooled with it.
So you would add:
SET processAffinityMask "15" -
If anyone else has any ideas that would help i'd love to hear
-
Still having tons of problems. Updated all my drivers and its horrible. Huge Spikes
-
I have also disabled Core Parking on my system and applied the latency fix (you can find a youtube video on it by searching for "hack my mmo ping"). I keep vsync off.
Typical framerates are 200+ in a quiet area, 60 in Dalaran mid-day, 40 in Dalaran during peak hours, 40 to 80 in 25-man raids, and 100 to 150 in 5-man dungeons. The lowest it goes is around 25 to 30 fps if I am running Fraps while in a major 25-man raid such as heroic LK.
With the latency fix I am almost always under 50ms latency. Mid-40's is typical.
I have a fairly large number of addons loaded - around 50 or so. I do not keep my graphics settings on max, not really due to performance but with a million sparkles buzzing around it can be very hard to see the fire on the ground. -
About your MS problems i use this program called "Leatrix Latency Fix" It will go into regedit and do all the stuff for you.
Leatrix Latency Fix : WoW Tools & Utilities : WoWInterface Downloads
When you download it, you just double click on the install and after that remember to reboot your computer. I was going from 240 ms to around 30-50 ms all the time.
This worked great for me. I have tried the regedit manually way. And it worked just fine. But this little thing will do it for you. -
thanks for that Sevrez - same drop in ping for me as well
-
Yeah i use leatrix's fix on my other PC. For some reason are the m17x it runs like 400ms havnt used leatrix on it yet, Yeah ill try to change the affinity mask because i KNOW this machine can do better... i spike huge and when in combat especially 25 man ICC it gets to 8fps unplayable for me.

What funny I remember listing to a group of people on Lord of the rings. What they tend to have to do is lower there Grapics becuse Raid 12 man or more. Raid would be sending to much info to our internet or computers. Grapics of people fighting Monsters and that is alot of data. This would even slow down even the fastest of Overclocking Desktops with 2 or 3 Grapics cards. Large Towns like 21 Hall or Moors and Mirkwood. If there 50 to 100 people and that will slow my fps down from 60+ fps down 15fps to 20fps.
Lower computers With the intergraded grapics like Dell Studio 1745 laptop. The Internet is not asking for as much info. Becuse the computer is Not asking for it. It runs Better. I know I have a Acer Core duo 1.66ghz with 4gb ram. Intergraded GPU Ran lotro at 30fps but it was set Low to mid range.
Internet Providers is also a Major Factor. What happen in my area We had Cable internet and I beleave there should only be at the most 15 20 People per T1 line. We had 55 People on one T1 Line. On some days the connection was close to Dialup. Lucky I switch to DSL.
Other Things that Might help. Not sure if Wow has this But a Game Defrag. Basicly it Defrags the Game and helps access time. (Do not do in SSD setup) -
The studio 1745 has an HD 4650, But ill try all the other fixes on the m17x and see how it goes. If it doesnt work im just going to build a desktop.
-
Yep nothing. Time to just build a desktop since i dont go anywhere anyway, and the studio works just fine if im on the move. Thank you all for trying to help.
-
That's interesting, I get 100-200 fps in 5 mans and 40 - 80 if I'm in a crowded area, or have my camera set to max distance. It only dips when I initially load Dalaran but after that I'm fine... everything max except shadows.
-
I have everything on Ultra and I get a constant 80-100 fps even in crowded areas. 25 raids I get 60-80 constant, BG's the same.
