I am interested in trying to get a hold of one of these RGB LED screens for my R1. I was wondering if someone with the R2 with the RGBLED screen could so kindly take a picture like the ones below so that I can see if the RGBLED screen shares the same port for data that the CCFL one does (I know there are 2 different plugs in the R2)
Thanks in advance.

I think moo took a shot of this before. I don't plan on opening my system up again for some time but based on what I remember, the port looks very similar.
-

all his shot shows is that there are 2 ports, he did not say which one the RGBLED goes into or what the actual sizes are
-
Scook, Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe this should answer your question
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=457211&highlight=RGB
Two plugs on the mobo. One for the RGM and the other for the non RGB screens. All it shows is that in order to make the mobo compatible with both screens, they installed two differant connectors into the motherboard. At least thats how it looks to me. -

Again...he did not actually show which was plugged into the Screen or give any dimensions, yes there are 2 different plugs but that does not mean one is the LED and one is the CCFL

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
I'm with Scook. I open my R1 laptop many times when I had the QX9300 to apply thermal grease. Also I opened my R2 many times too. They are the same connectors and ports. I dont believe that this cannot be concluded without a test.
AGAIN, THE TWO PORTS and CONNECTOR ON THE R1 and the R2 are the same.. I have offered before to test the panels but no voulenteer to send me one.
I have not concluded that the RGB cannot be connected.
fyi. the big connector is for the screen and the small one is for wifi and bluetooth cards -

I am not looking for speculation as we have already had that....I just want a picture of the RGBLED screen actually plugged in and then the port it is plugged into. Something conclusive

Surely Dellienware's support could answer a question like this... right?

Dave P took a RGB LED screen from a M6400 and plugged into a M17x R1 and it didn't work. Trying to save you some labor -

Still is not necessarily that simple but it is a good start
-
I'd still double check this info, before giving up hopes.
Do we need a modded BIOS to make the RGB screen recognizable for the R1? -
Seriously, you have a R1 and there is zero percent chance it will work.
I will gladly eat major crow if I'm wrong, but I highly doubt I am -
Agreed, it involves a lot more than just having a similar connector. Power regulation and perhaps even firmware support has to be built in. You want RGB LED? Get an R2 or Precision. -

Well if it is a BIOS issue, I requested RGBLED support amongst other things for the next BIOS in my other thread.
Can anyone link me to dave p's thread where he tried it out? -
Scook I think it is more than a BIOS here. I don't have any blueprints of the motherboard or the monitor but you have to make sure that the signaling is the same, the controller is the same, the firmware is compatible, etc...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I aint giving up that easy, I am confident it can be done. As far as the signaling, the video card does not know what type of display it is, it just knows vga, dvi/hdmi, displayport
The physical connection for data and power are my main concerns, as well as the BIOS being able to recognize the device as a screen -
stame im sorry i cant rep you atm but i just wanted to say i love your avatar haha
-
Oh, and while I'm at it, can even try swapping the screens -

if you could do that I would be a big fan!
You would be my hero and definitely get some rep -

Yeah don't give up scook, I got my R2 today, I love the screen. The R1's CCFL looks like total garbage next to the RGB.
-
Yea i cant wait till i get mine.. The RGB is worth every sec i spent with the r1 trying to get it replaced through dell.. lots of time there troubleshooting this and that... I loved the rgb on the xps16 and i use the xl2370 samsung.. cant stand looking at the ccfl on the r1.. so washed out..

I received my M17x this evening. I love the color and brightness of the RGB LED display, but it does not seem to support 1280 by 800. I prefer this resolution as opposed to 1900 by 1200 with a bigger font. I don't understand why this resolution would not be available. Is it because I am using the Dell drivers? Any suggestions? Thanks.
-
Dropping out of native resolution is a bad idea because lcd's don't scale very well. You should just use the Windows 7 feature to scale everything larger, it works good. -
C'mon now, if you stray from the native rez. you'll sacrifice the quality as the screen is optimized for its native rez! Don't even dare to reduce it!

Control + scroll
does excellent scaling in windows 7 -

the rgb led wuxga works on the r1. my buddy has an r2 and we plugged it into my r1. it works like a charm. that extra connector on the r2 isn't even used.

Congratz on getting your system! -
sorry i didn't take any pics. unfortunately he would not let me keep his rgb lcd! i can assure you that it works. that connector below is not used at all. someone with an r2 can confirm that by just removing the keyboard....
-
Once I get my new system I will compare the both of them since I will have r1 and r2 side by side.
-

That is some exciting news!
Looking forward to confirmation from aikimox -
I would agree for the r1 owners.. that would be awesome to get a screen for it.. I would definitely do it. the ccfl blows..
-
ya the difference in the display between the ccfl wuxga on my r1 compared to his rgb led wuxga is night and day.
-
also just got off the phone with alienware spare parts and they gave me this part number

Hi,
I saw yesterday the 2CCFL panel in the M17X. Looked very good, very accurate sRGB gamut.Very nice deltaE of 1.3!
my own pics looked very smooth, naturla - with fuel power.
Did anybody make a compariosn to the RGB-Led panel? I assume the panel in M6500 is same...
Best, Walter -
Thanks for the part number.. that is pricey.. um.. for that price it should be the entire, lid back cover, light, webcam ect.. lol.. that is a 3rd of the price of the notebook.. or more depending on build spec..
-
ya i can't afford that price. i googled the part number and saw an ebay auction but they wanted 1000! Supposedly it comes with the complete assembly
M17x R2 RGBLED owners help please
