I read in another thread on here that some people have found a way to edit the BIOS of their M17x R3's to stop the built in throttling of their nvidia 580m's.

Since that thread was about R3's and 580m's I figured I start another seperate one about R2's and 5870m's.

I experience this same "throttling" in crysis 2 and other games as well...kind of annoying. I notice it the most in Crysis 2...basically I am walking along with FPS 35-45 and it will briefly dip down ton 10-15 every so often. This is not a certain points in the game...its a time interval thing really, like the cards get to a certain temp and then "throttle down" for a couple seconds and then back to normal.

I found a thread with the exact process for an R3, but I am wondering if anyone out there in Forum land knows if this has been done on an R2 with dual 5870's?

Also, is this safe? I mean, i am assuming they put in the throttling for a reason...anyone done this and confirm it is safe?

Or perhaps I am just confused and the issue I see on my R2 is not the same as the one in the R3 from the other thread...let me know.

How were your temperatures when you experienced the throttling?

My temps never go over 80c and spend most of their time in Crysis 2 at 74-78c.

That is right near that 79 degree infamous mark... sounds possible.
