Many people brought up comparison of M17x and M18x in a few threads that I started.

I am FULLY aware of the hardware differences between the two, but some people have been suggesting that M18x has much worse build quality and materials used...

So I want to know real facts. What is the difference between M17x R2 and M18x?? (I am not asking about hardware. Tell me about build quality, materials, and other things not shown on paper)

    Thank you!!

I've never touched or seen either except on this website, but honestly they are apples and oranges. Everyone says the R2 is better built and has a better screen, but who wants to buy laptop that is already technically outdated and needs an XM CPU and aftermarket GPU to be competitive. Don't get me wrong, the R2 is amazing laptop, and the people who own them have no reason to upgrade to a R3 or m18 because component upgrades will do just fine. I have an R3 and the build quality is more than sufficient. The keyboard could be a bit nicer but I'm being nit-picky. I would assume the M18 would be similar. I would not choose the R2s superior "quality" over the M18s clear superior hardware UNLESS the price was significantly less or I play a lot of games which could benefit from the 1200p screen. If price was not an concern and you could immediately upgrade the R2 to Xfire 6970/6990s and a 920/940xm, then maybe I would consider it over the M18, but otherwise no.

    Thank you for the reply..

So essentially the build quality and materials used are very similar, but the difference really is the hardware???

I found out that Alien head eyes on the lid do not glow in M18x unlike other models... Thats a huge no no....

I saw an M18X today, It got a X-F AMD GPU with 16GB of RAM and a 2720 i7. Over prized, that I think my R2 is a better buy prize wise since it is cheaper. I'm not in the USA mind you, I'm in the middle east. The M18X costs with that config is 3500$!! My R2 cost me 2850$ only with a 820qm, I know it is less powerful than the 2720 but you know how technology changes fast!

Both are good but I think the R2 got it hands down, you can mod it to Oblivion while the M18X is new and needs time to be a good mod-able platform. But both got a tight build quality, the good thing with the 18X is the new futures like HDMI in and 3D, the M17X R3 got the 3D but it doesn't have SLI support like in the 18X with 3D.

if im correct all current alienware laptops have a plastic finish with a sort of rubbery touch

prolly mainly to reduce cost and being able to offer a competive price compared to the other gaming laptops such as the asus and msi ones that have been starting to come into alienwares ballpark.

most laptops seem to be going that route these days

You are incorrect, the M18x has the aluminum anodized finish just like the M17 r2.

both m17x r2 and m18x have aluminium/metal outer shell casing.

m17x r2: 1200p, tuff plastic palmrest, hdmi out, usb 2.0, no switchable graphics, battery lasts around 2 hours or less depending on use

m18x: bigger screen, 1080p, rubberized plastic palmrest, very thin metal sheet that borders keyboard and media buttons are part of this, usb 3.0 and 2.0., hdmi in and out, macro keys, switchable graphics between intel card and customized gpus. battery last longer than r2 w/ options

these are the main differences besided intel cpu generation.

remember m18x is relatively new and kinks/problems are inevitable just like m17x r1.
m17x r2 has been out for a good while, alot more stuff is known about r2 such as problems and their solutions, etc.

1080p is nice no doubt, but 1200p is better!
r2 is easier to upgrade in most aspects.
the rubberized plastic palmrest of m18x tends to absorb oils more than r2(seems more tuff and thus easier to clean)

    m18x is present/future
m17x r2 is past/present but can definitely hang w/ others bcuz can upgrade.

depends on your needs to which one you want.

i had m17x r2, and now have m18x (being fixed) and i really, really like m18x, but i still love my old m17x r2 and in some ways prefer it over m18x (im not using usb 3.0, hdmi IN, intel 3000, etc.), but this is based on my needs/wants now. perhaps in future my needs/wants will change i will prefer m18x over m17x r2.

but comes down to your preferences and your uses of laptop.

look at some youtube videos of both and pics of both on this amazing forum.
either way, both m18x and m17x r2 are some sexy beasts of machines.
